Bloomberg on Romney Immigration Crack: "Boy, Let 'em Come"

Michael Bloomberg doesn't think much of Mitt Romney’s characterization of New York City as a “poster child” for illegal immigration, saying at a press conference in Manhattan this morning that the city, and country, “thrive” on immigrants.

At an appearance in Iowa, Romney made a comment -- directed at Rudy Giuliani -- that the former mayor “instructed city workers not to provide information to the federal government that would allow them to enforce the law. New York City was the poster child for sanctuary cities in the country."

When asked about the comments in Manhattan today, Bloomberg said, “Boy, let ‘em come.” He went on to say, ““This city and this country were built by immigrants. Thrive on immigrants. And without more immigrants we don’t have a future.”

JRB says:

Looking at what Romney said, it was clearly an attack on what he perceived as Giuliani's handling of things -- and not New York or immigrants (Romney hasn't completely cast off his cross-over appeal to Blue State voters yet). How far the questioner went would be interesting to know. If Bloomberg was egged on -- for example, asked about his policy on immigrants -- his answer is understandable.

If not, he is yet again interjecting himself in the 2008 presidential race.

Hey Michael I don't understand the problem. New York City is a sanctuary city thus it is a poster child for legal immigration (which is good) and illegal immigration (which is bad). There is nothing wrong with telling the truth. NYC is a poster child for immigration. You could not pay me to live there.

Thanks for staying away.

bloomberg is a strange bozo (not verified) says:

Can blomberg explain the sexual harrassment cases against him when he was a ceo at his company? And can he explain his racist and sexist comments and the racist and sexist atmosphere he created at bloomberg LLP? Can we get a copy of the depostion transcripts and the book of bloomberg quips about women and minorities?

BigEd (not verified) says:

Notice he said "immigrants" not "illegal immigrants"! He is a smart politician. He can always have denyability. Personally, I don't see why we should allow millions of illegals here just because rich folk want someone to take care of their property.

Gerry (not verified) says:

I'm sure those murdered in Newark in last week are grateful that Bloomberg lets them come ...

America is a sanctuary, ask the millions of legal immigrants we welcome each year. Blomberg just doesn't want to pay more for his landscape work. We don't have to catch millions of illegal immigrants. Start putting those who employ illegals in jail, and give them big fines. The illegals will go home and maybe fight and work to improve the country they're really loyal to.
