Harlem Hits Columbia Up for $100 M.-Plus

Harlem Hits Columbia Up for $100 M.-Plus
Columbia University.

As the deadline for City Council action on Columbia University’s expansion comes closer, the local development corporation established to negotiate the all-important community benefits agreement has asked the school to donate an amount “well in excess of $100 million” toward creating more affordable housing in the neighborhood, according to an individual source familiar with the negotiations.

The affordable-housing fund is one of several outstanding issues, but may be the hardest to resolve before Dec. 19, when the Council breaks for the holidays. University spokeswoman La-Verna Fountain said Columbia would not comment on the negotiations.

The source said that the school, while it had not offered its own number, understood it had to contribute more, and in a more timely way, than the $20 million that Borough President Scott M. Stringer secured through an agreement in September.

they're tryin to displace an excess of 5,000 residents in harlem for some unnessesary expansion. let em come out their pocket.

get you facts straight - 138 apartments are affected. All will be given luxury housing compared to where they are now. NOT 5,000 residents. needless expansion? hope someone you know doesn't have cancer and the cures they would be trying to find in the science and research buildings doesn't matter to you.

this expansion is important enough for eminent domain.

You also have to understand, the $100 million that Columbia may dump in it's backyard is an investment in it's own future. I don't think anyone can argue that building a nicer backyard isn't going to be good for Columbia.

As a Harlem resident myself, I'm all for the expansion. I do feel bad for those who are being displaced. It's a difficult situation, but as long as Columbia does right by those they are displacing, they will have my support. They have the money to make sure the unfortunate people they are removing are taken care of. As long as they do that, they should get get backing from the city, council & residents. We have to remember that by letting Columbia finance the expansion, there's more city money for important things like community improvements & schools. In the end, I really believe it will benefit everyone (who's still left).

Where did u get this 5,000 number???? There are only about 150 homes in the entire development site. And they are in the NE corner (furthest out in the timeline)

Typical nonsense...they dont' deserver a dime. They should be overjoyed that something this great is coming to their cra**y community.

Thank goodness an institution like Columbia has the intestinal fortitude to expand and as a byproduct, clean up the area.
As a former local utility employee in the area, it certainly would benefit from the expansion.
Residents should be grateful and should put their open palms back in their pockets and stop with the "Great Shakedown".

A $100 million is way too low. Columbia has ballooned with billions in its capital campaign. Darn tooting they should pay for invading a neighborhood for what, more bloated educational facilities of banal design. Look at the rendering with this article -- pure commercial crap on the outside, sheetrock innards which come apart before final payment is made for construction.

Columbia doesn't take good care of the buildings they have and hasn't over the last 75 years. Its architecture has been in decline since it opened on Morningside Heights.

Its facilities maintenance is a scandal, talk to faculty and students who endure low-income housing classrooms and dorms, while high officer and senior faculty get the salons.

Its perennial answer to neglect and decrepitude is to expand for that allows creaming 20-50% off the top for disgusting salaries of administrators, and worst, for the fund-raisers they hire to suck money from contributors.

Pay Harlem its due for being a stabilizing influence with genuine cultural accomplishments, home-grown, not imported fashionista.

So yells a Columbia Alum long-ashamed of what Alma Mater misrepresents about Columbia's real estate driven board of directors, transient hustlers all.

Typical ignorance, people who have ulterior interests of greed speak in this manner, would you know of the neighborhood first hand? (reside there?) A cultural art factory of the 19th, 20th & 21st century, Harlem is responsible for more than you know in the arts, poetry, music, dance, literature, fashion, sports, entertainment in general. And what comes of these plain, cultureless, bland old shi shi (posh) neighborhoods? Not creativity, but consumerism of the arts from Harlem! Wake up, learn something & RESPECANIZE!
Jews got reparations for acts of abominations enduring a short period of time. Let's speak on reparations for over 400 years of slavery in this country!
It's not about Black & White, it's about Justice. Empower the true powers that be! The Truth.
