Develop Gowanus Responsibly

This article was published in the May 28, 2007, edition of The New York Observer.

To the Editor:

The quote attributed to me in “Paradise Lost? Artists Fear a Gentrified Gowanus” [May 14] lacked context and misrepresented my views.

My concern is that the Gowanus Canal should be cleaned and free from contaminants, followed by the enactment of a responsible development plan created with community input. I also strongly and wholeheartedly support the establishment of an Arts District in Gowanus. Barring these three options, then and only then would I prefer that the area remain undeveloped.

The last thing I would want in this thriving and unique area is inappropriate and irresponsible development.
