Holier Than Whom, Exactly?

Among the most durable myths of American public life is that conservatives are more authentic in their religious faith than liberals and progressives. Certainly this arrogant presumption prevails on the religious right, where commentators and politicians routinely denigrate the sincerity of Christians such as Hillary Rodham Clinton and Barack Obama, whose irredeemable sin is that they also happen to be Democrats and candidates for president.
With characteristic condescension, an editor of the right-wing Weekly Standard dismissed public expressions of faith from the left as both pointless and worthless. He declared that the Democrats can only attract Christians who are “religious in the way that Hillary Clinton is religious, which is to say a very liberal Protestant sort of view, in which they believe in everything but God.” That quip is quite mild and even mildly witty compared with the typical fiery denunciations from the religious right, which have branded the Clintons as instruments of Satan, and Senator Obama as a disguised Islamist or an Afrocentric extremist.
Both the Clintons and Mr. Obama are fully capable of expressing their personal beliefs and defending their theological views whenever that seems appropriate. Like other presidential candidates on both sides of the partisan aisle, Ms. Clinton and Mr. Obama can offer substantial evidence of their religiosity to churchgoing voters. Of course, that won’t discourage conservative critics from denigrating them (and all Democrats) as apostates and heretics, with a noisy enthusiasm that will intensify as we approach Election Day.
In these endless squabbles over the faith of politicians, however, it is striking how rarely right-wing politicians and preachers find themselves on the defensive about their faith—no matter how hypocritical and even hateful their behavior may be. These supposed men of God may be adulterers; they may be crooks and liars; they may cultivate the wealthy and corrupt while despising the poor and lame; yet somehow, their adherence to Scripture isn’t subject to doubt.
It is time to stop being so damned polite—and to start asking a few hard questions.
The lucrative business known as “Christian broadcasting,” for instance, is also the source of the most fervent, widely heard attacks on the sinfulness and apostasy of liberals, progressives, and Democrats. Now may be the time to ask: What exactly is so “Christian” about these multimillionaire Republican televangelists, who plainly look upon their flocks as so many fat sheep to be fleeced?
From the preeminent Pat Robertson of Christian Broadcasting Network to Paul Crouch of Trinity Broadcasting Network to lesser but rising figures such as Rod Parsley and John Hagee, these mountebanks persuade their hopeful viewers to send in checks, frequently promising that the Lord will bring prosperity to the poor and restore health to the ill if only those “tithes” are sufficiently generous. When the expected miracles fail to materialize, say the preachers, it is only because the faithful didn’t believe strongly enough—or didn’t donate enough money. Contributions are routinely misused to purchase enormous luxury estates, private jets, antique collections and lavish vacations in Las Vegas and other worldly resorts, rather than to propagate the gospel in Asia or to relieve suffering in Africa, as advertised. Indeed, very little of their reaping reaches the mouths of the hungry.
Meanwhile, these fundamentalist leaders promote anger and hatred toward homosexuals, liberals, feminists, Muslims, and Christians who don’t share their fundamentalist beliefs, all in the name of the Prince of Peace. They steer their followers toward right-wing ideology and Republican candidates, skirting or ignoring the laws that prohibit churches from engaging in partisan politics. They abhor Social Security, Medicare, national health insurance, and every kind of government assistance to families, even while they eagerly cash in on “faith-based” federal handouts (and lower income taxes for their own ill-gotten gains).
Now presumably the faith healers and prosperity preachers can cite interpretations of Scripture to justify their dubious behavior, but it is hard to imagine that any of this is what Jesus would do. Too many times in recent years the blustering enforcers of family values and public piety have turned out to be frauds. The unhappy examples range from Ralph Reed’s gambling connections and Newt Gingrich’s infidelities to Ted Haggard’s secret gay lifestyle. The latest episode involves Senator David Vitter (R-LA), another conservative Christian moralist, whose name just turned up in the D.C. madam’s phone book.
When these Christian gentlemen are caught with their pants down or their hands in the cookie jar, they invariably claim that they have repented and prayed for forgiveness. In a spirit of generosity that they often lack, let us hope that they are sincere and that they cleanse themselves of wrongdoing. But let us also be skeptical whenever an ostentatiously pious conservative presumes to judge the religious sincerity of liberal Christians—including candidates for president.

Evangelicals don't criticize other evangelicals? What planet are you living on?
John Hagee and other "prosperity theology" preachers are not generally respected by mainstream evangelicals; yes, these guys have a following, but it is not nearly as large a group as those evangelicals who are embarassed by this unbiblical ideology. All the preachers you mentioned combined don't deliver nearly as many votes for the Republicans as hatemongers like Al Sharpton deliver to the Democats.
Charles Stanley, Chuck Swindoll, Billy Graham, Franklin Graham, Chuck Colson, Ravi Zacharius, James Dobson, John Eldredge; strange how you never mentioned these men in your article. Perhaps that is because you wish to pretend that there are no men of character and intellect preaching the simple Gospel over the airwaves.
The fallen men you invoke as symbols of hypocrisy have indeed embarrassed the conservative movement. But is it not also hypocrisy to say that a person's sex life is nobody's business, but then use the sexual failings of your enemies against not only them, but anyone who agrees with their politics? These men should not be allowed to serve in any official capacity until such time as they can demonstrate that they have truly repented.
But Christianity is founded on the principle that "ALL have sinned and fall short of the glory of God". If we didn't let sinners serve we would have nobody to serve. What we will not tolerate, however, is someone unapologetically sinning, leading others to sin, and continuing in leadership. That is the difference between our faith and Hillary Clinton's.
What ever happened to "Judge not lest ye also be judged"?

Is that rule tantamount to this?: In all cases in which criticism is obviously justified, just remain quiet.
When fascism arrives it will be wrapped in the flag and carrying a cross.

Knuckles:
You indicated that some who are named in your text are politically involved.
What opinions do those politically active Christian pastors of whom you approve have as to preemptive military strikes as a policy and as to our allowing an imperial president to head up the executive branch of the government.

Nailed it as usual, Joe, but in case anyone doubts that far too many of these Christian conservatives are complete frauds, here is a link to a very damning article from a conservative Christian Hollywood insider. Very entertaining reading.

Joe: the issue of religion, morality and just good living is at the heart of this issue. When one looks demographically at the two parties Republicans are far more likely to attend some kind if religeous service, mass or other. Also, demographically it is Republican districts in the United States that have lower crime rates. If ones associates crime as one element in walking away from Gods word then one might draw a conclusion that those that walk in the way of their faith may be living better lives. You may argue that crime is driven by civil rights issues, lack of jobs, or some other societal ill. However, if you do this you diminish the God Like walk millions of inner city people are walking being faithful to their own beliefs. Should not the question be, whats distinguishes the religious poor who are unlikely to commit offences against their own community from those inividuals who have no faith and harm others. Faith, religion and service have no party, these qualities are at the core of who millions of people really are.
HILLARY-PUPPET OF THE NEO-LIBERAL DEMOCRATS
When did her Christian God give her the right to support mothers sacrificial killing their own children by abortion?
When did her American Constitution give her the right to support the sacrifice American wealth and blood, on behalf of domestic and foreign lobbies?
Ignore her acting; watch for those involuntary grotesque facial expressions - those fleeting grimaces of horror that reveal her tormented soul.
Is her impending doom the work of that “Vast Right Wing Conspiracy”, or is her own blooming moral depravity?
To know her puppeteer, Google: Mark Penn.
To understand the threat of foreign lobbies, Google: Mearsheimer’s documentary, “Israeli Lobby and US Foreign Policy”
umm that quote is Lewis Sinclair and it is merely attributed to him, I cant seem to source it primarily.
