John Liu on Eliot Spitzer, Driver's Licenses
The only elected official to show up to yesterday’s rally to protest Eliot Spitzer’s driver’s license proposal was City Councilman John Liu of Queens.
“It really seems to come out of left field,” Liu said of the governor’s position. “It’s hard to understand the logic and the thinking behind it.”

The blowback from the illegal alien groups shows that this never had anything to do with driver's licenses. Spitzer is now offering them one, and they are rejecting it.
What they really want is ID that makes them appear like legal citizens. But they aren't legal citizens, so they aren't going to get one.
What they should really get is used to it.
NYER,
This was not MEANT to be a citizenship issue, but a safe driving issue.
Having a driver's license doesn't make a person legal. It does make the road safer.
What makes many people upset is the fact that some deal was made with the Federal government by Spitzer, which now makes this issue an identity issue.
This was not what he received support for.
I'm ashamed that not more elected officials showed up to support this protest against this outrageous change of heart by our governor.
John Liu is the only one who seems to really rally for minorities. Maybe other politicos are too comfortable and lazy to come out on a Sunday afternoon to show their support.
