The Late Leona's Dog Will Live Large [UPDATED]
Leona Helmsley left her dog Trouble $12 million. The real estate mogul's will, which became public on Tuesday, stipulates that Helmsley's brother Alvin Rosenthal is to care for the white Maltese--until it dies and is buried alongside Helmsley in a Bronx mausoleum.
Mr. Rosenthal, for his part, got millions from his late sister, and two of Helmsely's four grandchildren will get $10 million each. Her other two grandchildren--for "reasons that are known to them," according to Helmsley--will get nothing. Helmsley's will also orders her belongings--including private residences--be sold and the profits donated to the Leona M. and and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust. The Observer's looking into whether this includes her holdings in various New York real estate, including hotels and office buildings.
Helmsley died Aug. 20 at age 87.
UPDATE: We got the Helmsley will from surrogate court in Manhattan. It doesn't exactly clear up the disposition of such holdings as the New York Helmsley and the Helmsley Park Lane hotels.
The will does, however, spell out that "all the residue of my assets of every kind, wherever located" be left to the Leona M. and Harry B. Helmsley Charitable Trust. The will also names as executors Mr. Rosenthal, her brother; Walter and David Panzirer, her grandsons; Sandor Frankel, her attorney; and a friend, John Codey.
A spokesman for Helmsley had no comment, and said the family would have no comment.
