Earlier this month the pop musician James Blunt was relaxing on the sand with a few friends in front of the Bridgehampton Club when a middle-aged man and woman approached to introduce themselves.

“This couple came up and were like, ‘We know you! We know you!” recalls a source who was sitting with Mr. Blunt at the time. “James was like, ‘Oh, really? That’s great. Thanks.’”

The twosome went on to say that they were huge fans of Mr. Blunt’s “show.”

This confused the singer, best known for his hit ballad “You’re Beautiful.” He doesn’t have a show.

“Who do you think I am?” Mr. Blunt inquired, according to the source.

“You’re the guy from Flight of the Conchords,” exclaimed the man. He then produced a postcard promoting the HBO comedy from his pocket. “That’s you, right?” he said, pointing to cast member Bret McKenzie, who like Mr. Blunt sports a goatee.

“Yes, that’s me,” the singer said graciously. “Glad you like the show.”

The satisfied “fans” departed. “I thought about telling them who I am,” Mr. Blunt told his friends, “but I didn’t want to let that poor couple down.”
