Spitzer Nominates Hemmerdinger as M.T.A. Chairman

The Governor nominated H. Dale Hemmerdinger, a real estate executive and Democratic donor, this afternoon to be the next M.T.A. chairman, subject to Senate approval.

The Straphanger’s Campaign, a transit advocacy group, called Mr. Hemmerdinger “a smart guy who cares about transit,” but noted that he was head of the Citizens Budget Commission when the organization suggested that commuters carry more of the burden of funding the New York City transit system.
