MSNBC Hedges on Tucker's Future

Rumors have been flying recently that Tucker Carlson could soon be on the way out at MSNBC. In a report that aired this morning on NPR, Phil Griffin, a senior vice president at the cable network, described Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews as part of the MSNBC "brand". Asked whether Mr. Carlson was also part of that brand, Mr. Griffin replied: "He is right now."

Not exactly a vote of confidence.

tucker has the lowest rated show on msnbc, followed closely by matthews. they threw donahue off when he had the highest rated show. seems like msnbc has a conservartive agenda mostly. thank god for olberman.

Ellen (not verified) says:

Tucker Carlson is an embarassment. Jon Stewart summed him up perfectly. He's an overgrown boy without depth or thoughtfulness. But MSNBC is interested in show business, not thoughtful analysis. Olberman comes off as a man who has the courage of his convictions, & that's the difference.

KM (not verified) says:

Tucker is just a terrible host. It's one thing to be fox-lite, but he's just a bad HOST. He talks over people with hissy fits like a pre-teen. He has little substance, but he also has
poor style.

It is about time!

George Bittancourt (not verified) says:

Whenever he's on I think: "Frat Putz!"

TXfemmom (not verified) says:

MSNBC and CNN need to wise up and dump their right wingnuts.

When Beck was thrilled to see the fires in Southern California, because he said that the people who lived there hated America, HE SHOULD HAVE BEEN YANKED RIGHT OFF THE AIR.

It was like seeing Bin Laden, without the beard and strange clothes, smiling and basking in the fall of the towers. What he said was much worse than what Imus said, in that Beck was excited by the possible DEATHS of people he thought were too liberal. Gloating over the deaths of people is worse than anything I can think of, even racism.

Dana (not verified) says:

I've been wondering how long it would take for Tucker to shuffle on over to Fox 'News', his natural habitat. Seems it may not be long, after all.

Jack E. Jett (not verified) says:

He can easily be replaced with a French Poodle.

StirFry (not verified) says:

I don't even think rightwingers like Tucker. They'd be wise to replace with a show hosted by Schuster,he's ripe for his own show.

renatam (not verified) says:

His act is as stale as 1980s and Ronald Reagan's "Morning in America." His attempts to modernize (adjust?) leaves him looking/sounding as stale (that word again) and empty as Republican "conservative" retoric does not to the ear. Empty. Vacuous. Boring. Untruthful and insincere. He doesn't attempt like David Brooks, TRY to address any of the innumerable Republican failures of the last 7 years -- and make accountability a priority -- thereby adding VALUE and traction to his program. David Brooks of the NYT Editorial Page KNOWS he must do this, if the Republicans are to be taken seriously and have any kind of influence in the 21st Century. Tucker, by serving too many masters, is now irrevelant. Always sad to see opportunity WASTED. Always sad to see opportunity given to those who WASTE it, take it for granted and/or are so wedded to ideology(s) they cannot move into the 21st Century or away from a FAILED PRESIDENCY of epic proportions. As AMERICANS we should all take every opportunity to address what has happened and be part of the process of REPAIR. Bring Donahue back, MSNBC. Chris Matthews is rapidly becoming a joke, drinking his own Kool-Aid. Ditto, Tim Russert, if he's not careful. Moyers is still working. Look at Katie's nos. compared to her esteemed predecessor. Maybe we have a consumer-driven trendline here. No more ridiculous, self-absorbed, political for self -- "personalities" destroying Constitutionally protected Journalism! The bloggers are picking up the slack. MSNBC is risking irrevelancy if they don't adjust as well.

Mark @ News Corpse (not verified) says:

I've been predicting Tucker's cancellation for a few months now. See my analysis of his subterranean ratings:

Tucker Carlson: A Ratings Black Hole

A year ago he denied that his show was in trouble and said that he still had a year on his contract. Well, that was a year ago and I haven't seen any announcement that he has re-signed.

Of course he has signed on to host a remake of the game show, "Who do You Trust? I know, that sounds like a joke, but it's true.

Nicole Anderson (not verified) says:

Carlson is such a misogynistic little twerp. Schuster has been filling in quite often and competently. It is obvious to me management is auditioning him. When he is on, I notice no one refers to the name of the show, "Tucker"

sag (not verified) says:

Obviously, the only thing that could save this guy is "the fairness doctrine"??

MSNBC needs a REAL conservative voice to offer some counterpoint to chris et al if they want to appear "balanced"; if they dont--tucker should be gone and replaced by another real progressive--or at least a 'real" democrat--we dont need his ilk here--let him get a RADIO show!!! [then he might get ratings, right?? lol]]

BrickSykes (not verified) says:

Carlson's milieu is a dorm room full of sophomores with him as a senior, and they're all ga-ga over his vast knowledge of politics and all the trenches he's fought in against Democrats. He is the Clint Eastwood, the John Wayne, the baddest gun in the West, this Mr. Carlson is!

What a pitiful wus! His envy of Keith Olbermann is palpable, and it shows on his face; he is the classic no-talent, snide fratty-bagger that everyone despises, especially when he rides up in his daddy's XKE.

When MSNBC cans him, he'll just run home to help run the food business. He'll say he's too proud to work for a local station, and would never even consider co-hosting with anyone. Just your basic sorehead who despises Democrats. Good riddance, Jerk!

PLEASE LET US COUNT THE DAYS MSNBC HEARD THE CHANEL CHINGING AT THE 4 P.M. SLOT WHEN TUCKER CAME ON, EVEN " STAR TRIK TOOK A BOOST IN RATINGS AND THERE REPEATS.
I WISH HIM LUCK THE MAN REFUSSED TO EVEN TALK REALITY.

renatam (not verified) says:

All we want or need are REAL bonafide JOURNALISTS who take OUR 21st Century challenges SERIOUSLY -- and make programming about US instead of their cult of personality. I sometimes think Chris Matthews doesn't need guests or viewers...and is talking to HIMSELF. Russert's constant self-focus (his team, his views, his books, his dad...and nobody else asking tough questions as before his arrival on the "Meet the Press" panel BECAUSE HE IS THE PRESS ALL ALONE IN HIS VIEW...has taken the cult of personality as journalism way too far. Jack Welch is no longer at GE, so maybe we will see these shows return to what they were intended...and "Meet the Press" returned to the esteemed journalistic Sunday morning venue it once was. The Rupert-driven cult-ratings definition of Journalism is affecting our Democracy guys/gals. Business OWNERSHIP of media outlets is affecting and narrowing the prism through which we get our NEWS. NBC/MSNBC cheered our entry into Baghdad. Chris asking faux questions now, is bogus when he pointedly didn't when it mattered. Even he knows the (Democratic/Liberal) tide is turning. We should turn this bunch out when we turn Bush out of the W.H. Term limits for faux/fawning/self-absorbed JOURNALISTS! They can ALL golf together. GE as eco-friendly? More of the same. Don't buy it. Take a look at the Hudson River next time you are in NYC...

Rantboy (not verified) says:

TUCKER MAY BE GONE?? THANK GOD. IT COULDN'T HAPPEN A MINUTE TOO SOON. LITTLE TUCK IS CLEARLY A BUSH LICKING WANNABE WHO CAN'T MANAGE TO GET HIS RATINGS OUT OF THE TOILET. HE'S NOTHING BUT A FRAT BOY WHO GETS A HARD ON WHEN TALKING ABOUT REPUGS. LET HIM MOVE OVER TO FOX-WORLD WHERE HE BELONGS. GIVE ME SOME KEITH, BABY!! HE DA MAN!!!!!!

renatam (not verified) says:

The Matthews children are on deck IF we go to DRAFT as Charlie Rangel is suggesting...the war has gone on so long. Sending your own children to war ALWAYS makes people take a second look. A President who wants to invade Iran isn't something Chris Matthews wants to cheer, 7 years into this Presidency. Watch...these bozos ALL have young adult sons. Let's see them cheer this time around...

Roger H. Werner (not verified) says:

About a year or so ago, I watched Carlson debate Eric Alterman. Alterman although still young is something of an intellectual and Carlson is just a good ole boy in a suit. To say the least, i was surprised Carlson agreed to the debate since the outcome was predictable. Alterman made him look foolish. About the only thing that one could say about Carlson is that he looked so foolish one felt sympathy for the man.

Ron Howes (not verified) says:

I didn't have an opinion about Tucker Carlson one way or the other, until I saw him interview Dennis Kuchinich about his plan to impeach Dick Cheney. (November 6, 2007). Tucker tried to make light of the situation and mock Kuchinich, and got his butt handed to him by Kuchinich. You can see it on YouTube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bELc-kjLR_E

Blandy (not verified) says:

Tucker Carlson is sorta like Ann Coulter: you get the sense that neither of them really believes what they are saying. They just posture and turn for audience, and ratings, and money. Little Tucker's bow-tie mimicing another famed (and now laughable) conservative. Ugh.

Nincompoop (not verified) says:

Wasn't Carson accused of rape? What happened with that?

Hope (not verified) says:

I agree with everything you said and wish I could have said it as well. I have stopped watching Russert, Carlson, and Matthews. Smug, self-satisfied and, in the case of Matthews in particular, self-congratulatory, fawning, and rude. I never thought anyone could make me turn to Wolf Blitzer, but these three have. He at least acts as if he were a journalist most of the time and not a self-absorbed, preening twit.

What wouldn't I give to have, as you put it, "real bonafide journalists." Can we make this happen?

ChezMJ (not verified) says:

And WORST of all, Tucker Carlson is a very, very bad dancer! ;-)

Maybe his extremely early exit on "Dancing With The Stars" wasn't his fault. He has the oddest body--like a body by committee--the top half tall and the bottom half short. Anyway, he was graceless and plodding. His dancing was terrible, too!

My wife went to junior high with him. As one of the only Jewish students at La Jolla Country Day, the main thing she remembers about him were his anti-semitic comments. Seems like his tendency to pick on minorities has deep roots.

Hey, Tucker, don't slam the door on your way out, buddy.
Here's hoping--for the health of the public airwaves-- that that nonentity Beck follows you into TV limbo land soon.

Mark @ News Corpse (not verified) says:

On Nov. 2, Tucker signed off his show saying...

“That does it for us. Thank you for watching as always, we mean that sincerely to all eight of you.”

Sounds like he knows the hammer is about to drop.

Snarky (not verified) says:

In a perfect world Tucker-lite Willie Geist would be there to keep Tucker company as they're both being walked out the door.

Devin Leonard (not verified) says:

Gee that's a shame...BWAA HAA HAA.

Carlson is a little whiney GOP boy, who has failed at every show he has ever done. He got canned at CNN along with that ancient turd Novak, and now his miserable ratings starved show is going to get pulled by MSNBC. Tucker should also remember that MSNBC has a history of not supporting their talent....after all, they gave the shaft to Imus out of pure cowardice, a move Tucker supported....well, payback is a bitch boyo.

PS. If fat, Chris Matthews is part of the MSNBC "brand", well, it's no wonder they are in second to last place in the ratings.
