NYC Labor Day Parade Canceled
This year's Labor Day parade has been cancelled, according to The Chief.
The head of the Central Labor Council, Ed Ott, is quoted as saying the group felt it best "to remain focused on our organizational priorities and review the various observances of our Labor Day events as we consider how to march forward in the best way possible for workers."
The group did hold a parade last year, immediately after Ott's predecessor, Asssemblyman Brian McLaughlin, was indicted for misusing public money and steering contracts to allies.
"This shows there is new leadership," NYS AFL-CIO head Mario Cilento just told me. He denies McLaughlin's scandal had anything to to with this year's decision. He said around the time this year's parade would have been held, the group will instead honor labor workers by focusing on the health care needs of World Trade Center heroes and relevant legislation in Congress. That'll taje place on September 8th (more info on that after the jump, along with Ed Ott's statement).
Although it's not unprecedented for the parade to be canceled, it's the first so far to be done strictly for the sake of a legislative priority.
The parade was cancelled in 2001 because of the terrorists attacks, and in 2004 because the Republican National Convention was held in the City and, as Cilento said, "labor was squarely behind the Democratic candidate." But Cilento did say the parade was held more frequently in previous years.
The Labor Day parade is a proud tradition in our labor movement, and each year we review and consider the various options of how to best celebrate and honor all working people. This Labor Day, as we remember the contributions of working people, the heroes of 9/11, and those who so honorably protect our freedom and security here and abroad, we join together at a rally on September 8th at the World Trade Center site to address the chronic health impacts, ongoing monitoring, medical treatment and worker’s compensation for first responders and other workers suffering from the long-term effects of 9/11. As always, our Labor Day mass will be conducted at St. Patrick’s Cathedral on Sunday, September 9th at 10:15 a.m. and we encourage all unions to bring their banners for the 9:45 a.m. processional.

It was cancelled in 2002 out of respect for all of those lost on 2001.
Also, it does not appear that the parade is "cancelled" rather it appears labor is holding a more significant event this Labor Day in honor of working people...a rally on September 8th to support legislative action for workers exposed to the effects of 9/11...that seems much more important than a parade...
I don't know who the hell the cheif think he is but this ain't gonna anything better so stoping the parade is not gonna help. plus my opinion is that he not even try to cancel such a big event because they will be

WHAT KIND OF BULLSHIT IS THIS. THIS IS A HOLIDAY FOR THE WEST INDIANS TO COME TOGETHER AND CELEBRATE. ITS FOR OUR COUNTRY. THIS IS JUST ANOTHER EXCUSE TO TAKE SOMETHING AWAY FROM THE BLACK PEOPLE. YOU PEOPLE ARE FULL OF IT. EXTREMELY FULL OF IT. JUST BE UPFRONT ABOUT THIS SHIT AND TELL US YOU DON'T WANT US TO HAVE ANYTHING. YOU PEOPLE ARE A BUNCH OF PIGS.

Guys relax, it's not the same parade. For information on the West Indian-American Day parade check the official web site http://www.wiadca.com. If anything changes you'll see it there.
Ever since Clinton and his NAFTA policy, they have killed any power unions and organized people have had. CAFTA, free trade, fast track, WTO. All against us, working people, Americans. Union leaders have folded under their global presures. Bloomberg, Giulini, Bush, Congress, etc. don't give a dam for us. We need to have a voice NOW more than ever, and they cancel the parade.LOL. They are affaid of demontrations, like the ones at UNION SQUARE all the time. NYC. is becoming a test site for a POLICE STATE. They got all the camreas, but we can't take any pictures. You all start connecting the DOTS. I'm done. 911truth.org
Carribian Day Parade is different than the Labour Day Parade. It will be impossible to alleviate the parade when all the money from other people of different countries and states bring in. America is greedy. I am and many others such as yourself is looking forward to Juvee!. I love my people.
if you are going to live in america especially nyc then please learn the difference between the LABOR DAY PARADE AND the west indian day parade.you may want to remember your countires you left but you should really remember the country that now provides for you and your family by providing you with better lifes then you had in your birth countries could ever have. or else you would not be here
Its not a WEST INDIAN holiday, and i'm glad the parade is getting shut down! West indians b tryna come to america on some shit, and try to claim it as their country, but dont want to respect the laws and decisions made by the leaders. All i'm saying is that i'm African-American and i could care less if that stupid ass parade get shut down. And i live 3 blocks from Eastern Parkway, so I'm tired of all those coconuts running up and down my block.
The regular working man means nothing in this country any more. I hear the powers that be want to change "Labor Day" to "CEO Day", labor can't afford to make it to the parade any more.
As far as NAFTA, CAFTA, Free Trade, Fast Track, WTO, etc being Clinton initives, I didn't see the Republicans do much to stop any of it. As a matter of Fact, after 8 years of Republican rule things have gotten so bad "labor" can't afford to make it to the "labor day" parade.
The New York City Central Labor Council wants to turn Labor Day into some kind of 911 rememberence day and my son thinks Labor Day is for women who are having babies. I guess both are more relavent in todays "Global Society" than the American Worker.
