In Retrospect

This article was published in the June 4, 2007, edition of The New York Observer.

To the Editor:

I have enjoyed reading The New York Observer for almost a decade now. But one piece republished on the Observer Web site left me shaking my head all day.

The mean-spiritedness spewing from Candace Bushnell’s “Manhattan Wedlock! Never-Married Women, Toxic Bachelors” [Dec. 26, 1994; posted to www.observer.com May 10, 2007] makes me wonder why I ever thought “Sex and the City” was so great. Perhaps the piece was meant to be funny?

Yes, New York has its own unique and bizarre dating rituals, but just because someone is over 35 and never married, female or male, that doesn’t make them unmarriageable, and it certainly doesn’t mean they “suck.”
