Spitzer to Hold Secret Press Conference on Driver's License Plan
Eliot Spitzer, who has been getting mauled from all sides for his compromise plan on providing driver's licenses to immigrants, is trying to sell it to reporters from independent and ethnic newspapers at an invitation-only press availability today.
A source said it’s happening today at 2 p.m.
Spitzer’s spokeswoman Christine Anderson said it was invitation only, and declined to specify where it's happening.
UPDATE: A Spitzer aide called to object to the characterization of the event as a “secret press conference.” It is a sit-down with the Independent Press Association, a group that says it “works to promote and support independent publications committed to social justice and a free press.”

Openess and transperancy? Miss Anderson's new position as Communications Director is steering this mess? She needs to get fired.

No seriously, this is just utterly ridiculous. Why invitation only? Does he think that independents and ethnic papers will take it easy on him? What the hell is the point?
And it makes him look weak and scared. Not exactly the image one would want for a Chief Executive. If he wants to talk to certain groups, invite them for breakfast, don't hold a presser by invitation-only.
Guys - face it, the ethnic press, outside of Spanish-language papers (and even then, only the El Diarios and Hoys of the world), get short shrift. They are understaffed and can almost NEVER be found at press conferences for that exact reason. For those of you who have EVER attended a mayoral, gubernatorial or other governmental press conference - or any other type of press conference - name THREE ethnic newspapers that have been in attendance. Can you? Without making it up?
Yeah, I thought so. Eliot went out of his way to accommodate this segment of the press, via an organization (the IPA) whose job it is to secure such access. Bravo Eliot. Let's hope it happens more than once.
