Venus and Serena in History

If Venus Williams goes on to win tomorrow night and then in the final, it will give the Williams sisters three of this year’s four Grand Slams -- an enormous comeback for them.

Yet, if we return to Mary Carillo’s point from two weeks ago -- that the Williams sisters haven’t lived to their potential -- here’s something that underscores it.

Serena Williams has finished only one year at number one; Venus Williams never has.

Here’s a look at the number of weeks some big names have spent at number one:

Serena 57
Venus 11
Sánchez Vicario 12
Henin 85
Sharapova 14
Hingis 209
Graf 377

No one's going to argue with their amazing record in the big tournaments. But just think how dominant they'd be if they played all the time.

Dan Meara (not verified) says:

Imagine how often they'd both come up on the losing end against Henin. That's a delicious prospect. Maybe Serena has to limit the number of tourneys she plays because otherwise she'd run out of excuses for falling the petite Belgian. LOL.
