Crier a river! Did we just wake up in crazy town? New York women seem to suddenly think that if you go out on the street in what are basically footless tights and a baby-doll top, you’re dressed … and then for special occasions, it’s the Taxi Driver 1970’s hooker-wear (shorts with high heels) …. O.K.! We have a theory about people who like to read mystery novels … and a lot of them are going to be showing up today at the Bryant Park Reading Room for a panel discussion from some female writers of the genre. Find out why the call is always from inside the house, and or why the ladies prefer the term “crime novelists.” Participating is Mary Jane “don’t call me Higgins” Clark, Linda Fairstein and Jaqueline Winspear, while Court TV gal Catherine Crier plays hostess. Moving on, we ask you this: When you hear “Swedish,” how far down the list (after meatballs) do you get to jazz? Up at the Scandinavia House, there’s a Swedish Jazz Showcase featuring the Peter Asplund (Asplund? I just met him!) Quartet, which is made up of Mr. Asplund, Jacob Karlzon, Hans “don’t call me Christian” Andersson and Johan Löfcrantz Ramsay, as well as electronic duo Midaircondo, which “explores beat, sound, voice and improvisation” (uh-oh). Meanwhile, out at Jones Beach, summer concerts are beginning to sprout like spores: Husky-voiced legend Stevie Nicks (still our favorite from VH1’s Behind the Music series) will take the stage with weirdly hunky crooner Chris Isaak. For hipsters still living in ’04, pile into the Bowery Ballroom’s dank windowless room for hot Scots Franz Ferdinand.
