Bloomberg on the Mayor's Discretionary Funds

When Michael Bloomberg disclosed that his administration has its own slush fund, it was the first time many people had heard of it.

At yesterday’s press conference in the Bronx, Bloomberg was asked why his office gives out discretionary funds when that’s what the City Council also does.

"I gather it's been a practice for a long time," he said.

swindon (not verified) says:

New York must be at the end of the rainbow, because we keep finding all these pots of taxpayers' money around.

So all these Dems, who received as much as $1.925 million from the mayor, then endorse Republican Mike Bloomberg. If this isn't payola, I don't know what is.

At least Oddo is honest about it: these handouts were Giuliani's way to "help" -- that is, buy votes -- for fellow Republicans.

What really gets me is the excuse that everyone gives: "I gather it's been a practice for a long time," Bloomberg says. Well, not exactly a long time. Just his crooked predecessor and him.

But seriously, using taxpayer money to keep your favorites in office is fraud. Use your own money, and it's called a campaign contribution. Use the taxpayers' money, and it's theft.
