Cooking up Scandal: Cindy McCain Allegedly Lifts Another Recipe

McCain: In a Moment of Reflection

In April, Cindy McCain posted a few recipes, including one for a Passion Fruit Mousse and another for an Ahi Tuna with a Napa Cabbage Salad, in a section of John McCain's Web site titled Cindy's Recipes.

Unfortunately, these were not her recipes. They were lifted word-for-word from recipes on the Food Network website, one of which was penned by Rachael Ray. The McCains claimed that it was all an intern's fault and called it a "low-level unpaid staff debacle."

Mrs. McCain may have to find another intern to blame because somehow she's managed to do it again!

The current issue of Family Circle magazine put Michelle Obama's recipe for Shortbread Cookies with zest of lemon and orange against Mrs. McCain's Oatmeal Butterscotch Cookies for readers to choose the best. Now, according to the blog Meaningful Distraction, Ms. McCain's recipe appears to once again be plagiarized. This time from Hershey's.

Tsk, Tsk, Ms. McCain.

Who's surprised?

She stole her husband from another woman and drugs from a CHARITY.

Lifting a recipe is really small potatoes in comparison.

But watch out. I have no doubt that the McCains will look the other way as GOP operatives try to steal ANOTHER election.

Thanks GrayMatter,
I couldn't have said it better myself.
Kudo's to you!

Tom Woolf (not verified) says:

Hold on here - you mean her first set of recipes were gathered in a clandestine manner from a wearer of terrorist sympathizer clothing?!?

Vicki (not verified) says:

You've got to be kidding. If you put her in a kitchen, she wouldn't know what the temperature dial on the oven is ... for that matter what is an oven or even what a saucepan is. Do you think she ever cooked anything in her life except maybe Somemores over a campfire at a Girl Scout camp?

This business about First Ladies having to have cookie recipes is bullshit. Do you think either Cindy or Michelle would ever have to be in the hot kitchen making meals for her husband and his guests. Only moron I know that ever did any cooking in the White House is Dubya and that making hot dogs to serve to and insult the British Royal family. I understand he also pulled the same stunt on Sarkozy.

AdmNaismith (not verified) says:

Not surprising considering she stole drugs from her charity to fuel her pill-popping ways.

I am disgusted with the commentary on this site and the site of the cookie recipes. It is obvious there is no value in this cookie bakeoff because it is nothing more than mere raw politics with the cookies allowing more hatred to spew forth like most political discussions. McCain said hers came from a friend. Clinton's came from his long time chef, and Obama's came from her childrens' godmother.....so none of them are original yet why is McCain being excoriated from getting a recipe from a friend? I use butterscotch chips all the time because my child is allergic to chocolate. My mother was Scottish and made shortbread constantly and on trying this recipe out, there is no way I would ever make that one again, yet hers get glowing reviews and is leading by the comment section. This has nothing to do with cookies and everything to do with another chance to spew hatred. I thought the Oama campaign and Obama said that wives should be off limits. I guess all the hatred against McCain makes his request hypocritical, doesn't it!

MarkT (not verified) says:

Well, IANAL, but since recipes don't enjoy copyright protection, at least in the US (http://www.copyright.gov/fls/fl122.html), and since Cindy McCain would probably be less involved in running the country than Laura Bush has been, who cares? Why are we wasting time on this rather than talking about John McCain's horrible four-more-years-of-Bush policies.

I think Cindy would have been much better served, and not so bitter, if she had followed the advice of Better Botter and bought some better butter:

Betty Botter bought some butter, but she said, "This butter's bitter. If I put it in my batter, it will make my batter bitter. But a bit of better butter will make my batter better!"

So she bought some better butter, better than the bitter butter, and she put it in her batter. And her batter was not bitter!

So 'twas better Betty Botter bought a bit of better butter.

I can't believe anyone thinks either of these women bake cookies.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

A multigazillionaire like Cindy probably doesn't even know how to operate a microwave, let alone a stove. That's what the servant folk are for.

Michelle, coming from a lower middle class family, undoubtedly knows how to do a little baking and cooking.

Cindy can afford to hire someone to chew her food.

MELouise (not verified) says:

Dammit, oatmeal "scotchies" were one of my fave cookies as a kid! Gram used the same recipe- but funny thing; rather than claim it as her own, she used it off of the back of the bag of butterscotch chips.

Cindy McCain doesn't even know where the kitchen of her mansion is.

For those who choose not to see the importance to Ms. McCain's serial plagiarism let me explain in very small words so you can understand:

She has a history of taking things that do not belong to her. (see husband, taken from wife #1 and drugs, taken to support her illegal habit from a charitable organization). This is a pattern.

If she were (Heaven forfend) reside in the White House we will have to hire someone to count the silver after every meal.

millsapian87 (not verified) says:

One component of her prescription drug theft was getting a doc to write prescriptions in the names of other employees at the charity, which Cindy would then fill herself. She also lied about getting treatment at the time. So she's a liar and a forger, as well as a thief. Perfect material for a First Lady.

The Democratic National Committee has faith that their (young) man from Illinois can take the White House without Florida, Ohio or even Pennsylvania? Blasphemy, you cry? Oh, ye of little faith. Haven't you heard Our (latest) Messiah's sermons? Have you not seen the crowds cheer? Have you not felt the electricity of this man?!? Obama will win come November without Pennsylvania. Without Ohio. Without Florida! You say impossible. But miracles happen. Just believe. Just believe.

Sarcasm.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

Who cares.Maybe Rachael Ray is flattered enough that she coped her recipe to let it go. If it was your recipe C. McCain copied by all means lead the fight, otherwise aren't there more pressing problems in the world than this silly nitpicking?

LivelyDeb (not verified) says:

I can't believe the comments on this particular subject. VERY few recipes that I use are my own. I pick them up from everywhere and occasionally "tweak" them, but again, I didn't produce the original recipe. When someone says, "Deb, you can bring that awesome salad you make for our get together", I don't immediately say, "ok, by the way, I got that recipe off of The Food Network". I just bring the salad.

Cindy McCain probably has more class in her little finger than Michelle Obama will every hope to have. Despite all the trash being spewed about her, she is a wonderful philanthropist, giving to many deserving causes. Yes, she stole drugs from one of her charities. Yes, that was wrong. But, that is what addicts do - they do anything they can to get their fix. Are you saying that because she is an addict she is not a good person? I know several individuals who have beat their addiction and gone on to become wonderful citizens. She did get help for her addiction and was able to overcome it. I say kudos to her. Many people never do.

A campaign should be about the issues. Whether or not Cindy McCain has her own cookie recipe or not, definitely is NOT one of the issues I think is important enough to make a decision about our country and its future. Get a clue, people...if you can't find your own, they sell them at Walmart for $1.99 a piece.

mrEthiopian (not verified) says:

God some of you people are clueless, this issue has nothing to do with recipes the issue is that Cindy is a liar, plain and simple and a bad one at that. I would say to Cindy stop lying but we all know Republicans are incapable of that.

As for the mental case who stated that Cindy has more class then Michelle, what planet are you from. Classy people don’t lie and steal and manipulate the press use people.

We need to get the republicans out off office, in six years we have gone from having a surplus of $$ to bankrupting the country, I don’t think this country could take 4 more years of repugnant republicans.
