Democratic Establishment for Connor

Dan Squadron is trying to unseat fellow Democrat Marty Connor for state Senate, in the district that represents lower Manhattan and Brooklyn.

But more interesting than the people on the ballot are how Demoratic power brokers are lining up in that fight. Schumer is supporting Squardon, his former aide, against Connor, who didn’t support Schumer in his 1998 primary for Senate.

But as the invitation for Connor’s May 8th fund-raiser at the Ritz Carlton shows, he's got a good chunk of the rest of the party establishment.

Co-hosting Connor’s fund-raiser are David Paterson (who overthrew Connor in a 2003 Senate coup), Andrew Cuomo, Tom DiNapoli, Sheldon Silver, Malcolm Smith and likely mayoral candidates Christine Quinn, Bill Thompson, and possible citywide candidate Marty Markowitz.

Where the fuck is Scott Stringer?

Scott would never have been in the Assembly but for Marty Connor's lawyering preventing Bill Nuchow from stealing the County Committee vote.

Wow! Talk about long memories, Anonymous! I don't think I've heard the name Bill Nuchow in an age. (He's been dead lo these 15 years.) He was an interesting guy and, as I hazily recall, a wonderfully progressive labor & political leader.

But I do see Mr. Stringer's name on the invite.

Other than Senator Conner having backed a losing candidate for Senate many years ago, what on earth is this primary contest about? I've been watching it somewhat and cannot, at least so far, tell.

"what on earth is this primary contest about?"

It's about a rich young carpetbagger who grew up in Riverdale and just moved to Brooklyn in the past year, who has no community experience or roots, and is using the inheritance that his father - who was involved in the Wedtech Scandal of the 80s - left him to buy the election.

He has no job currently, got his job with Schumer only via his father's connections, and has accomplished little on his own.

Interestingly I thought it was about a do-nothing incumbent who is in bed with the opposition party and still can't pass legislation that helps his constituents to save his life (or hopefully his job)...

Why does Marty Connor have "Queen of the Slush Funds" or Quinn Piggy on his invites? Marty--- stay away from Quinn, shes only going to hurt you.

hey spider:

make up your mind--if he was in bed with the opposition, he would be passing legislation. Carl Kruger gets to pass legislation. That's the prize you get for being in bed with the opposition. He's either lame OR disloyal. Clearly, he is not both.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

why is Quinn there?

must have printed the invites a while ago.

Fly On The Wall (not verified) says:

Clearly, 'Spider', you do not live in Connor's district.

I do, and Connor has helped us on community issues when we need him.

'Exterminator' got it half-right; read his comments at 7:12 am. Connor is not disloyal, and he is only lame in so far as every minority Dem Senator is lame under the Bruno regime.

What has Tom Duane accomplished recently, Connor's adjacent senator?

Connor's not perfect. Is Silver? Is Quinn? Is Spitzer? Is Paterson? Is Bloomberg? Is Thompson? Are you?

It's easy to bitch behind a keyboard.

But this Connor constituent will take an experienced legislator any day to an unknown, greenhorn, trust-funded, carpetbagger buying an election with tainted money.

"What is this primary about"?....

Easy. It is about a newcomer trying who is running on a message of "change" in politics, trying to unseat an incumbant. The really interesting part is that the "change" candidate has paid off the Working Families Party for their endorsement.

In return, the Working Families Party will do their best to further ruin their reputation, errrr, I mean advertise Squadron as the progressive in this race, hoping no one reads the book he wrote for Schumer's support of his desire to be a lifetime politician....like Connor.
