As Edwards Endorsement Breaks, Clinton Donors Shrug

Getty Images

The news of John Edwards' endorsement of Barack Obama was reported as Hillary Clinton addressed her top donors in her Washington, D.C., home today.

"It actually broke during the meeting, and I was passing my BlackBerry around when NBC confirmed it," said one donor in the room. The reaction of the fund-raisers in the room was mixed, according to the bundler. "Some people said, 'Shit, now we have to deal with this?' Other people said, and I agree with this, 'Who cares? Maybe if he did it two months ago. But now who cares?'"

Someone in the room sought to inform Clinton of the news by declaring out loud "Edwards has just endorsed Obama," according to the donor.

Clinton responded calmly. "Well, we expected that. It wasn't a surprise."

According to the donor, the atmosphere in a nearby hotel where the donors met before heading over to Clinton's house was tense. People were trying to figure out the most compelling arguments for her to continue.

"The campaign said they had one," she said. "It was, 'We are going to win the popular vote and let's see what happens.'"

During the meeting Clinton betrayed no intention of backing down, and a separate donor present for the meeting called her "unbelievably focused, focused on winning. She believes in her heart that she is the best candidate and the best candidate to beat McCain." That donor added that some people in the room were "skeptical, but Harold [Ickes] made a compelling case. But yes, Hillary acknowledged the challenges."

Clinton was also apparently emotional. And according to one of the donors, her eyes welled with tears as her contributors expressed their commitment to her.

I'm sorry, but someone from Hillary's merry band of top donors, have to sit her down, and be totally honest with her. She doesn't stand a chance. Instead of being "yes people" to her, and telling her what she wants to hear, she needs to hear the cold hearted truth. She will not win the democrat nomination. Period. Oh yea, and they will have to learn how to duck really fast.

Djplam (not verified) says:

She learned, from New Hampshire, that the tears really get to her people and she has been turning them on and off as she needs to so she exact what she wants from those around her. This is just another example of how phony, excuse me, PHONY with all capital letters that she, Mrs Clinton is and always has been. I have said, from early in the Clinton administrations, that you can tell when either Bill or Hillary is lying . . . their lips are moving! I would not give a red cent to anything that she has said in the past nor what she will say in the future. She is only out for HRC and no one else.

Hilary should stay in the race, according to today’s Rasmussen poll; 62% of Democrats agree.

More interestingly, in the same poll, 29% of responding Democrats think she should run as an Independent if she loses the party nomination!

How about this scenario: Hilary runs as an Independent to provide an option to disenfranchised Democrats and Ron Paul or Mitt Romney run as Independents to provide an option for disenfranchised Republicans.

Many Democrats don't want Obama's agenda of socialism and I would love to have a viable alternative to the ding-bat McCain.

Jeanne (not verified) says:

One of the reasons I couldn't support HRC is that she surrounds herself with sycophants and thus is stubbornly able to refuse to face reality. If they were real friends, they'd tell her the truth with kindness.

She's not just tenacious, she has narcisstic personality disorder reinforced by her husband who is also afflicted with this disorder.

As long as Hillary and Bill are willing to spend their own $$$, let them. Just don't stiff the small vendors who you owe money to although you're justified in stiffing Mark Penn, but then you were foolish enough to hire him.

Caveat emptor - that's why I couldn't vote for you and voted for Obama.

Cora (not verified) says:

HRC reminds me of a slug in its death throes. Here in Oregon, we have a lot of slugs. They are snail-looking creatures without shells. Sometimes people dump salt on them to kill them because they eat our tender seedlings at the beginning of our growing season and ruin our strawberries by taking bites out of them.

Once the slug has salt poured on it, the slug begins profusive sliming as it begins to shrivel. The voters and superdelegates are pouring salt on Hillary, and as slugs do, she is sliming and shriveling. Do you see any difference between the two?

Anonymous (not verified) says:

Some one needs to tell this creature, she cannot keep changing the rules no matter whose coat tails she is riding on.
We gave her a pass when she lied she did not know her husband was a serail molestor of women all ages.
We gave her a pass when a dead mans paper appeared on her desk.
we gave her a pass when she facilitated a fanatic President and his henchmen to invade an innocent nation.
we gave her a pass when she lied on Bosnia.
We gave her a pass when she enhanced her resume by whoppers.
Enough, you are out of your league now, go hand out with he who you claim has a crush on you, your buddy who has been helping you win elections in Bad Faith by sabotaging Democractic party elections.

ha! no kidding . After Obama's 41% shellacking WV loss , of course Axlrod jerked the chain.

Don't count out a Clinton...and oh BTW Mr.57 States is drooping. By the time the EG comes Obama will be gladly resting back in Chicago having all the cigarettes he wants and Hillary, the 60 year old woman who is running him ragged, will be campaigning and winning the White House.

enjoy

Ron H (not verified) says:

Hillary, as with her impeached hubby, will never get 50% of a national vote. Too bad for NYC libs, they lose again and again and again. Still, Satan has done useful work for the GOP in exposing many of the Obama weaknesses and it is appreciated.

Comparison of each of the candidates' supporters: the supportive shrugs of Clinton donors to the announcement of the Edwards endorsement, to the heckling boos from the audience when Edwards mentioned Clinton's name in his endorsement speech.

They may be elites and real cool, but Obama supporters sure don't have much CLASS.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

Edwards endorsement means nothing..It is just like Ted Kennedys who could not bring his own state to Obama..Edwards endorsement was self-serving..He went for who he thinks is winning..He would have endorsed Hillary if he actually thought she was winning...Why didnt he endorse before? Think about it. Just another one of the boys...Just like gambling, go for the one you think will win and collect the benefits...

Anonymous (not verified) says:

The press has been wrong, wrong, wrong this season. They don't want McCain so they say he's dead, they don't want Hillary so they say she's dead. Looks like the GE will be a fight between dead man and woman walking.

Hillary is so much stronger than BO and McCain...she could win as an Indpendent. If the Dems don't count MI and FL she just may run as one, too.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

Popular vote is not how the nominee is chosen. You think the party is going to let her use Puerto Rico to take the nomination from the candidate who has been ahead in pledged delegates, popular vote throughout the campaign, and now superdelegates as well?

I'm tired of Clinton supporters thinking they are the only ones deserving of hurt feelings or outrage.

Is she the one to beat McCain without the AA vote and progressives?

Change the rules to give her the nomination and she'll find out.

When that union leader introduced Hillary in Ohio the night Obama won Wi and Hawaii, with such derogatory language, I don't remember Hillary's supporters doing anything but cheer. I don't remember them showing "class" by denouncing such insulting language. In fact, Hillary didn't either.

Yeah. Real classy.

ToySoldier (not verified) says:

A lot of Hillary's supporters are going to be so determined to see her win that her camp will tear apart the party before giving in to losing the nomination.

The Clintons have their sights set. They are a powerhouse in their own right. Any action, appointment, or position will be used by her to attain her true goal. She has $20,000,000 debt and her supporters won't let her stop.

Not sure why some people don't think slander, pander, and lies are ok for a presidential candidate.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

I agree with you ToySoldier.

I often wonder why Clinton supporters will not do a little research (I was a Bill Clinton supporter and a Hillary Clinton supporter until comparing candidates) Hillary Clinton spearheaded the most disastrous "health care initiative" in the early 1990s - remember we had a Democratic Congress in 1992? Midterm, 1994, it all went Republican. That is no mistake.

She lies (and without skipping a beat when she can no longer change the reality for others, she admits to lying as though it's no big deal .. "Oh, yeah, I wrote about Bosnia in my book, I knew I wasn't under sniper fire, I made a mistake." Next question?.)

She leads Congress in taking the most money from lobbyists and special interests, hasn't a clue what it is like to be working class - but is a first class actress, I have to hand it to her. She defiantly states she knows better than experts (gas tax? ... say, does that remind you of someone?), panders, manipulates and incredibly refuses to look at the cold hard facts about this primary - changes the goal posts or metrics for winning according to whatever favors her in the moment. Redefines entitlement ("This will all be over Feb 5th) She has run a terrible campaign (with absolutely no plan after Feb 5th) has had over-the-top drama within her campaign... the list is just endless. Here's a tidbit for you: she and Bill actually stole furnishings from the White House when they left (!!!) Is it rude of me to tell you that?

What galls me most is so many women want her to become president simply because she's a woman. That is plain embarrassing.

By the way - I noted in this thread someone said "Obama supporters are rude," --- check out related articles --- Emily's List "trashes" NARAL. Rude? (Again, it's an entitlement thing).

The last thing I will say is that her blog is moderated to the point that if you do not go along and play "I Love Hillary" your comment(s) will not be posted. Period. Have a conversation? Hm.

It goes to show you that what I have been saying for a long time is TRUE! Those people who support Hillary Clinton don't do so because they truly believe she is the best person for the job but they believe she believes it. So since their loyalty lies with both Bill and Hill Clinton they cling onto hope with her. These supporters can't religuish the past and remember how good it was in the 90's when the Clintons were in control. But what they fail to understand is that times were different and much has happen under the fail presidency of Bush and people are looking for a different type of leader than just a yes man when it is popular as Hillary has displayed with her rotten war vote! The contractitions with the Clintons are enormous first she feels that every vote matter but only keep quoting off the states that she is leading in! (makes you say mmmmm, right). Next she has joined the band wagon on being the voice for Michigan and Florida, but funny that their votes were not important when she had a chance to vote and agree on the rules of the primary (again mmmmm). She felt that she was a shoe in so no obstacles could be possibly to hard for her to over come. Yet, in the same breath, she is saying that the superdelegates can still overturn the voice of the people and vote for her because she is the better person for the job (again mmmmm). Now here is where I am confused; does the voices of the people matter or not? Or is it they only matter when it benefits Ms. Hillary. If every vote should count and this is her basis for staying in the race then how can she possibly be asking the superdelegates to overturn the will of the people and vote for her(again mmm)! Hillary needs to make up her mind who side she is on, the people or herself. Me personally choose the latter

"I told you so!" (not verified) says:

Quite frankly, I'm a bit discouraged by this whole thing! I can't help but what wonder what's coming next...I have a feeling that Mr. Obabma won't turn out to be the "second-coming" that he's allowing himself to be portrayed as, and unfortunately when that breaks it will be too late. The convention will have been held, the "king" will have been crowned and the nominees will be in full-throttle mode for the General Election...Unfortunately by the time the veil is lifted and the truths exposed, the crown will be left lying on the floor with no one who will want it...Sadly, though, for those of us who decided to sit this one out, we'll be left to say those four well known words..."I told you so!" Fear not, though, at the end of the day, the RNC will have managed to pull the biggest coup of all time, bigger than Gore's Florida debacle and bigger than Kerry's unchallenged bid in Ohio...welcome to Jan 20th, 2009, the beginning of third term of the current administration! Oh well, this will be business-as-usual and this election season will go down in history as the biggest, most expensive, most contested and divided "much-to-do-about-nothing" ever!

A reluctant Obama voter (not verified) says:

A few of the many reasons I won't vote for Obama:

1. He has blown the chance for democrats to have 16 successive years in the White House.

2. His supporters refer to a fellow democrat as "satan," "a slug,""a creature," "a liar," surrounded by "sycophants,""a slanderer," "a panderer," a racist, a "PHONY" ... even though almost one half of the democratic party has voted for her and as if name calling is a good substitute for a real discussion of the issues. This is a wonderful strategy to get that other half to now vote for your candidate, by the way.

3. They boo any mention of her name. Talk about a unifying force in the party.

4. He calls professional women "sweetie." Again a great way to get that constituency to move toward him rather than McCain.

5. He is foreign policy "light" and doesn't understand how the ecomony works.

6. He plays the "race card" daily and his surrogates scream bloody murder at every real or imagined reference to race ... forgetting, I suppose, that his own race helps him with African American voters. Afterall, what other constituency votes +90 percent for any candidate?

7. His surrogates have labeled anyone who disagrees with his views, thinks he is too inexperienced, or believes Hillary can do better on the economy as racist.

8. And he has belittled the feminists that stood side by side with African American civil rights leaders working for rights for all the disenfranchised.

Hmmm ... wonder why a large portion of her backers won't vote for him and for that matter would support her running as an independent.
