Scoring a primo Valentine's Day reservation can be every bit as nerve-wracking as finding the right date. Even after you've nailed the cuisine and location, romance isn't a given. Not every table is a sure thing. You know the culprits—set near a chilly front door, wedged by the bathroom queue, or cuddled up right next to the plating station. Fortunately, plenty of the city's two-tops offer enough intimacy, atmosphere, and service to do Cupid proud. If inventive French cuisine and formal service turn you on, head for JoJo or Chanterelle, both with well-spaced tables and expertly trained staff. For more festive French, The Odeon and Balthazar deliver bistro classics in snuggly booths. A rustic garden with views of the stars and a wood-burning fireplace welcomes couples to August. Il Buco follows in the same vein, with the warm feel of a mismatched farmhouse. For the ultimate accoutrements of romance, though, look to the piano, garden and flickering candles of One if by Land, Two if by Sea.
