This isn't the first time Gennaro, who is running for state senate, has tried to bring together environmental issues and popular culture. The chairman of the City Council Environmental Committee also appeared in a movie about oil with Woody Harrelson, which was shown at the Sundance Film Festival.
UPDATE: A spokesman for Gennaro said the councilman was invited to speak about the environment and politics by the event organizers, the Queens Young Democrats. Gennaro's spokesman also said they did not know it would be billed as a beer-related event at the time.
