Georgia: Big for Obama, Maybe for Romney Too

That Barack Obama has won Georgia is no surprise. That he apparently has won it by such a large margin -- perhaps exceeding 70 percent of the statewide vote, if early reports are true -- is a shock, and could portend trouble for Hillary Clinton nationwide tonight. Georgia's Democratic electorate, like South Carolina's, is about 50 percent black, and Obama has apparently won this constituency overwhelmingly. But if his statewide advantage over Hillary is really that large, it means Obama has done substantially better among white voters than he did in South Carolina.

The tight three-way race on the Republican side is good news for Mitt Romney. Georgia is one of several states for which his "true conservative" message (of the last week) was tailor-made, but there was a possibility that Huckabee -- with his appeal to religious conservatives -- would relegate Romney to a distant third. Romney needs to pick up a win in Georgia, but the fact that he's at least in competition right now suggests that other states -- like Tennessee and Missouri -- may be in play for him tonight.

Zach (not verified) says:

Tim Russert is reporting that Obama is doing exceedingly well tonight with white male voters. Granted, it's still relatively early here in the East, but if this trend continues through the night, this is not good news for Hillary Clinton. I think her presidential ambitions are slowly withering.

It's quite apparant Obama has gained a lot of momentum this past week. The Kennedy endorsements took me by surprise. At one point in time I thought Hillary could win but I don't think that's possible now.

Hillary is brilliant, but she just has difficulty connecting with a large segment of the electorate. It's sad because she is so talented. Bill was initially an asset, but that day is long gone. The dynamics of the campaign have really changed.

I think Hillary should have locked Bill in a McDonalds and told him to stuff his mouth with fatty burgers, fatty fries, and fatty shakes. Unfortunately, Bill has had a fat mouth for the past month. He couldn't shut up. I know the fatty burgers, fatty fries, and fatty shakes wouldn't agree with Bill's frail heart, but I'm afraid Hillary is going to be really, really, really heartbroken.
