Gonna Fly Now! Clinton Runs as Rocky In Philly

Pennsylvania Crowd Says It Doesn’t Trust Obama: ‘President Named Barack?’

PHILADELPHIA—“We need her,” Barbara Vizzini, a 46-year-old equipment operator from Middletown, said before Hillary Clinton took the stage at a rally in Fairless Hills Monday night. “If we don’t get her, we’re going to end up with John McCain.”

What about Barack Obama? Why couldn’t he beat the Republican nominee?

“The race thing,” interjected her colleague Daniel Kirner, 52, from Tullytown.

“I mean, a president named Barack?” agreed Ms. Vizzini.

Hillary Clinton has spent the past few days courting the white, blue-collar workers who are most receptive to her no-nonsense message of hard work and experience. They also happen to be the people most suspicious of Mr. Obama. Some, like Ms. Vizzini, like him well enough, but echoing Pennsylvania governor and Hillary surrogate Ed Rendell, they think he will have problems with some white voters. Others think he’s an unreliable upstart who will stumble when it counts, or worse, that he’s simply a fraud.

Among such voters, Mrs. Clinton is reveling in her role as the anti-Obama—a grounded, nuts-and-bolts candidate who refers to infrastructure problems on I-95 and declares herself “excited” to be in whatever factory or faded manufacturing center she happens to be touring at that moment.

She frequently says, in an implicit contrast with Mr. Obama’s cosmopolitan heritage, “My father was from Scranton.”

And in a purposeful counterpoint to Mr. Obama’s nonspecific message of hope, Mrs. Clinton casts herself as a deliverer of more jobs, fairer trade and a better economy.

On the evening of March 31, Mrs. Clinton spoke at another “Solutions for the Pennsylvania Economy” rally, this time in Fairless Hills, just over the border from Trenton.

Before the candidate arrived, a long line of cars filed past the Sugar N’ Spice Gentleman’s Club (“Continuous Dancing”), past modest homes and slowly through the Keystone Industrial Port Complex, where signs directed visitors toward International Salt and ABC Crushed Materials in the green zone, the Café Too Busy to Cook in the blue zone, and Bulk Terminals and Air Products in the red zone.

Inside a gaping and chilly hangar that housed a tanker, wind turbines and a yellow tractor, a mostly white, working-class audience of about 1,000 cheered as Mrs. Clinton took the stage to the ultimate comeback soundtrack, Survivor’s “Eye of the Tiger,” from Rocky III.

Her speech consisted of a litany of populist applause lines and references to small-bore economic issues—Pell Grants, college loans and targeted tax cuts—that resonated with the attendees. She spoke disparagingly of the “Wall Street money manager,” and said that her father, a former Penn State football player, “was a little skeptical about having a daughter who was a lawyer.” She spoke worshipfully of the workers she recently met, “a nurse, a teacher, a truck driver, a steel worker, right here in Pennsylvania,” and promised a return to fiscal responsibility. She lashed out at oil companies for getting tax breaks, and at “China and their unfair trade practices.”

And unlike Mr. Obama’s supporters, who have been trying hard in recent days not to look like bullies, Mrs. Clinton warmed to the opportunity to underscore (if the Rocky metaphor wasn’t obvious enough) that she’s no softy.

“You know,” Mrs. Clinton said at one point, “I see that sign out there that says, ‘Do not quit.’ Well, you know one thing about me is I do not quit.”

By the end, some of the people in the crowd found it frankly inconceivable that she could lose to Mr. Obama.

“She’s got this one locked,” said Mary Yates, a 67-year-old retired worker in a chemical factory. “No Muslim is going to be president. No drug addict. If Hillary isn’t the one, everyone I know will vote for John McCain.”

Her campaign may not be at liberty to say so, but that sort of sentiment--factually misguided though it may be--is just what the Clinton campaign needs right now. Mrs. Clinton trails Mr. Obama in elected delegates, and can pretty much only win by convincing the bulk of the party’s uncommitted superdelegates—the appointed political elites—that she has to be the party’s nominee in November if they want any shot of beating Mr. McCain.

The really tricky part, though, will be selling a bunch of lunch-pail, underdog-loving voters—the very ones she’s enjoying success appealing to—on the idea that it’s all right for a powerful cadre of political officials to, essentially, trump the decision of the primary electorate. Next Page >

NY DEM (not verified) says:

As a proudly liberal New Yorker, I was raised to believe in the "working classes."

But the more I hear from them this election -- in quotes like the ones above, e.g., "No Muslim is going to be president" -- the less hope I have.

These good people should watch out, or the train is going to leave them at the station. It already has, economically, but it will soon politically, too.

An Obama-like coalition expanding the Democratic Party base may very well render them meaningless. They've gotten nothing from the Republicans. What happens when the Democrats start ignoring them? Either they seek partnerships with people outside their class, race, and age, or they'll sink to the bottom. They're two-thirds of the way there. It's only a matter of time if they continue to think and vote the way they do.

All pol's lie. Get over it.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

I am appalled that people like this keep shooting themselves in the foot--they vote Republican and get nothing, as the previous poster states so clearly. They can't see past the color of a person's skin or a different name. Much of their worldview hangs on outmoded attitudes and poor critical thinking skills (for more on the impact of poor education on democracy, see Susan Jacoby's new book, The Age of American Unreason.) The race problem in America is right out there in the open now and I am glad that Obama addressed it. It's time to look at character, as MLK said so well. America is becoming a true melting pot and whites need to realize that and acknowledge it. They are living and thinking white privilege. (I'm white, BTW.) The great thing about this presidential race is that people come face to face with their prejudices. They can take the easy way out and vote for McCain, but that's not considering what's good for our country. One of the best commentaries this week was by Roger Cohen, who says "The Baton Passes to Asia," where intelligence and education and success are highly valued (see http://www.iht.com/articles/2008/03/30/opinion/edcohen.php?page=1). Something to keep in mind, because we are up against a lot more than meets the eye. The only candidate that is at all forward thinking and innovative is Barack Obama. We need that, oh, do we ever.

Hillary and Bill should start a new party "Hill and Bill pensionist party" and court Blue Colour agees votes! They can co-operate with Republicans. Clintons tones and ideas in this campaign is very close to republicans too!

Western New Yorker (not verified) says:

People hear what they want to hear. During both of her senatorial campaigns she emphatically said she was running for Senator, not President and fully intended to complete her term. She campaigned in Western New York, an area of lost jobs, decreasing population and increasing elderly and poor. Her promise was to bring new jobs and stimulate our economy. She did nothing of the sort. When we were hit by a freak snowstorm in October 2006 with extensive tree damage, FEMA payments were held up. Surprise, surprise! Senator Clinton announced that the payments would finally be made. When was the announcement? One week before the 2008 New York primary.

I don't understand her blue collar support, because if you ask blue collar people around here what they gained from her as Senator. The answer is "nothing"

Anonymous (not verified) says:

An eye opener for you.

Barack lies too!

They all do, so get off it with your narrow-minded thinking of just Hillary being the only one

He takes money from oil companies, but advertises that he don't.
He changes his views to suit that particular audience to what they want to hear. It's been proven.
What about Tony Rezko?
What about Rev. Wright?

Let's just stick to the issues and choose the best candidate for the job, which I believe to be Hillary, because she has oodles of experience over him.

He's good, but needs to be time-tested more.

Peace.

I agree with the posters here who lament that our electorate has its share of uneducated, ill-informed, brain-washable, non-critical thinkers, who don't have the capacity to understand that times have changed. It is people exactly like those quoted in this article who are responsible for 2 terms of BushCo.

But the depressing question is, just how much of the electorate is comprised of people like the retired factory worker who called Obama a Muslim? Granted, that voter is 67 years old, so perhaps in a few decades this cretin mindset will be largely be rooted out due to simple evolution (or we can hope).

But for this current race, we can only pray that this new generation inspired by hope and drawn into the political process for the first time, will offset the halfwits. Is this possible? Probable?

I firmly believe it will be a McCain-Obama contest, but also truly think that if Obama loses, it is because racism is still alive and well.

Show me your friends the adage says and l'll tell you who you are. It is old racists and out of tune with reality people that Hillary galvanises. The world is now a small village, and there is nowhere to hide. America to be relivant as the leader of the free world has the gretest opportunity yet to elect a leader that approaches global events in a wholistic, firm, and humane manner. America needs a leader the world can relate to, and as a foreign observer of events this election year Obama is that leader. When people begin to appropriate names with ability and performance, they are in 'coo coo's land. Many feiry, and annointed preachers accross Africa still retain their pre-conversion names. America, should outgrow the old school, and lam glad she is outgrowing it as evidenced by the large turn out of citizens ages 18-39. They are tired of the past.May God save America.

Ah yes. The geriatric, ambiguously racist wing of the democratic party. Hillary's base.

As a young person, I find myself resenting a lot of these people above 50 who support Clinton. It's my generation that has to deal with problems beyond where the next Medicare check is coming in the mail.

To be brutally honest, I find myself looking forward to a time when these people have all aged and died. This will leave the problem-solving to people with a mindset grounded in the modern age. Older people have some funky baggage (cold war, civil rights era, union supremacy)that is pretty meaningless as we go forward into the 21st century.

THE CLINTON "MELTDOWN" .... (not verified) says:

Bill Clinton's tirade stunned some delegates

The Bill Clinton who met privately with California's superdelegates at last weekend's state convention was a far cry from the congenial former president who afterward publicly urged fellow Democrats to "chill out" over the race between his wife, Hillary Rodham Clinton, and Barack Obama.
In fact, before his speech Clinton had one of his famous meltdowns Sunday, blasting away at former presidential contender Bill Richardson for having endorsed Obama, the media and the entire nomination process. "It was one of the worst political meetings I have ever attended," one superdelegate said.
According to those at the meeting, Clinton - who flew in from Chicago with bags under his eyes - was classic old Bill at first, charming and making small talk with the 15 or so delegates who gathered in a room behind the convention stage. But as the group moved together for the perfunctory photo, Rachel Binah, a former Richardson delegate who now supports Hillary Clinton, told Bill how "sorry" she was to have heard former Clinton campaign manager James Carville call Richardson a "Judas" for backing Obama.
It was as if someone pulled the pin from a grenade. "Five times to my face (Richardson) said that he would never do that," a red-faced, finger-pointing Clinton erupted.
The former president then went on a tirade that ran from the media's unfair treatment of Hillary to questions about the fairness of the votes in state caucuses that voted for Obama. It ended with him asking delegates to imagine what the reaction would be if Obama was trailing by just 1 percent and people were telling him to drop out.
(P.S. -- word of Clinton's blast shot all the way back to the New Mexico state Capitol, where Richardson spokesman Pahl Shipley reiterated Tuesday that his boss had never "promised or guaranteed" Bill and Hillary his endorsement.)
"It was very, very intense," said one attendee. "Not at all like the Bill of earlier campaigns."

Paul, Northern Ireland (not verified) says:

Hillary Clinton is all fur coat and no knickers. She claims to have "misspoken" about her Bosnian Bond-esque experience, yet it is abundantly clear that she told a bare-faced lie. She said she was opposed to NAFTA from the start, which was another blatant lie, through which, she hoodwinked Ohio voters after Obama released a legitimate leaflet, warning people that she was in favour of NAFTA. You'll all remember the press conference she arranged so she could show her outrage at Obama telling the truth about her, with the infamous line "Shame on you, Barack Obama!"

Don't forget, she claimed to have helped bring peace to my country, Northern Ireland. Another complete fabrication, used to pad her resumé and trick you all into thinking that just because she was first lady to a (disgraced and impeached) president, that somehow qualifies her over her opponent to lead the country!

Are you really that stupid? For God's sake, think about it!

I wouldn't trust Hillary Clinton as far as I could throw her, and that's coming from a Brit who has watched this Democrat nomination race religiously, with no bias or prior judgement.

Vote for Obama, or Grandfather McCain wins (and will most likely celebrate by reading you all a bedtime story).

Wake up, America.

Victoria C. Serbia (not verified) says:

The premise on which Hillary and Bill base their campaign is the same premise used by all the power hungry-the end justifies the means. It has been used by Bush to justify this war and is the premise on which torture is based. The deliberate lying by Hillary regarding the Bosnia event, the racism promulgated and the sense of entitlement has given us a preview of what their administration would be like. This country will not survive another amoral administration.

The media bias is tilting this election towards Obama with their one sided and unfair reporting. This country needs jobs and healthcare and Hillary will give us those. No Hillary then Go McCain and go straight down the ticket Republican so Obama's and friends, Louis Farakan, and Rev. Senator Obama has a fresh outlook for the American people. Hillary Clinton has so much of the old and not enough confidence as she claims to have as a woman. Everyone helped the female to get a vote. Now she has used all of the "catty" wields of an unprofessional to get shortterm attention but will not get long term results. As a female, this is why I have been so disappointed in her campaign style. Her skills to keep people in an upbeat manner deserves an "F" at the most because she is always talking "down" about the other candidate through racism or any other cynicism that does not keep people in this country out of the "gutter" for religion or politics.

Shame on you Vizzini and Yates! Honestly, a Muslim drug addict? Don't embarrass yourself again repeating this nonsense, because you sound really dumb. As for McCain, good luck with that. Over the last several months he has proven he cannot remember geography, militia factions, his position on things like HIV prevention, etc. We cannot afford to have him answering any call at any time.

Please, do yourself, and your country a favor, get on www.barackobama.com and learn about his plans and vision for the nation. The issues facing this nation don't care if you are white or black or old or young; everybody is hurting, and it's only going to get worse. Rise above your ignorance.
