Hillary Leaving South Carolina to Bill and Chelsea [updated]
A source in the Clinton campaign confirms that Hillary Clinton will be spending most of the week before the South Carolina primary in states other than South Carolina.
She’s expected to spend Tuesday in California and Arizona, and New Mexico. Wednesday she will be in New Mexico and New Jersey and probably New York. And on Friday, she will return to South Carolina, a day before the primary here.
The Clinton campaign clearly sees difficult odds in South Carolina, and has decided to spend much of its time and resources this week in Feb. 5-voting states. At the same time, they are not writing it off completely: Bill and Chelsea Clinton will be campaigning here tomorrow.
UPDATE: Wolfson calls in to say that she’s going to be here on Thursday, too.

That is just totally absurd and insulting to say that South Carolina blacks are racist because they are beginning to move towards Obama. I actually think given the dynamic of the race they have been very guarded and serious about supporting any black candidate just for the color of his skin. They've almost flipped the opposite direction just to be safe. I think the 10,000 mile trend is that everyone knows Hillary and has their opinions, but as any state gets to know Obama his trends tick up, white or black. If you look at the two-month trends in any of the states this race is about the emergence o f Obama and broad appeal in a post-race race.
Well, Min Yee, you are definitely not alone here. There are a lot of Obama fan here. Unfortuntely, most of them are extremely vicious towards Clinton. Hope you have noticed from there comments. Doesn't it make you think twice about what kind of crowd you are with?
As a boring 'boomer' who voted for the Clintons 'way back when' I have just one thing to say to them: retire. It is time to step aside and let the next generation take over. You, Mrs. Clinton, are the same ole song from long ago. Enough already. I can't stand the thought of some more years of these has-beens.
Obama admitted that his campaign was playing the race card. NOTHING either Hillary or Bill stated had anything to do with race. Some supporters' comments may have, like Cuomo Jr's, but one cannot control every supporters' remarks. Nothing Hillary or Bill said had anything to do with race and Obama even admitted that his campaign was wrong to push this allegation. Case closed.
Grow up people. This is politics. The Mr. and Mrs. Bill Clinton have been setting this up for some time. Act as though you care for the black vote in SC and if you lose say that black folks would vote for a mass murderer if he was black. Brilliant!
Min Yee if a white votes for another white is that racist vote? Just asking.
I'm a Precint Captain for Obama in the state of California and I want to say this to my fellow Obama supporters whether they are White, Latina, Asian and so forth... Please bare with us Black People. We have never had a candidate of this magnitude and sometimes we get a little bit overexcited.
I will say this about Hillary.. There is certainly a diviseness (hope that's spelled right) about her that I believe makes her unelectable in the fall. Think about it... Repbulicans make up 1/3 of the general election, Dems make up 1/3 of the general election, and indpendents make up 1/3. Do you honestly think that Hillary will win Independents or any republicans???
I know what Bill is doing, but what is Chelsea running for?
Message to all the politician in SC supporting Mrs. Bill Clinton. She has abandoned you for easier pickings. What dopes you are.
Why waste time fighting a racist black vote, reflecting black pride in a viable African-American candidate. Smart move, and actually I'm for Obama.
The politician assured the voters that Mrs. Bill Clinton wanted their vote and would campaign hard to get it.
Yeah right!
"Sellery" figures that the more divided the black and white vote is in S. Carolina, the better for her nationally. And she thinks people who are offended--both black and white--are so stupid we'll come back to her if she sleazes her way to the coronation...I mean nomination. Well if she succeeds she'll find out we have long memories.
I would say this is a smart strategy, given that Bill Clinton is the one with the street cred amongst blacks. However, some people will vote on the basis of race rather than on the basis of politics and policies. Krugman makes a strong case that Obama's recent Reaganomics reflection is quite mistaken and harmful. But as I said, some people vote on race rather than politics. But that doesn't make them racist, does it? Well, not when they're black, I guess.

She also knows that southern blacks don't read the newspaper, watch cable news, or any news at all. So most voters there will not know the difference. That's just a fact.
I think it's normal for African Americans to think of voting for Obama, he's like a favorite son, and it's normal to vote for a favorite son, even if you identify more with some other candidates' position. It seem clear to me that were Mr.Obama not in the race most would be voting for either Hillary or John Edwards. I don't think anyone's choice of who to vote for should be second guessed by anyone else. That said, I think Mr.Obama is relying too much on voters who are against Hillary and I'd like him to inspire his supporters away from Hillary-hate. I loved his speech on the empathy deficit, and would have liked it better if he'd demonstrated empathy to Bill Clinton, who has no empathy deficit, and put himself into Bill's shoes regarding how he feels about his wife. Next I'd like to hear him talk about the hypocrisy deficit, no, wait, there isn't one, yet.
Would they also vote for Clarence Thomas?
As for Obama's supporters, I think they are politically naive and ideologically confused. And, they have no idea that the vitriol that they hold for Clinton was specially constructed for them by the far right wing.
Watch any cable news show on tv and listen to the coverage of the race, and in particular, Hillary Clinton. You won't hear in the course of a day across all of the networks a single positive remark about Hillary, unless it's a backhanded compliment about how good she is at politics.
Obama on the other hand has been treated as the Golden Boy, a prince, royalty. Nothing but positive comments, nothing but praise and/or a championing of his cause. Yet the true Democratic voters are not buying it.
Clinton has withstood a constant barrage of negative commentary--the likes of which would have sent Obama into a suicidal depression--and yet her supporters still see through the CRAP and support her. We know that all her so-called "negatives" were specially constructed by the right wing. Every one of the so-called "scandals" were completely fabricated by hers and her husband's political enemies, from Richard Scaife on down.
I suggest the Gen Y supporters of Obama, see a documentary called "The Hunting of a President," which documents the right wing's decades-long attempt to ruin Bill Clinton out of sheer political motivation. He threatened their power base in the Reagan continuum, which your boy recently praised. I suggest you consider that all of the bilious vitriol that you Obama supporters are bandying about was crafted for you by the right wing. And you are acting like little busy bees spreading the polluted pollen that they planted years ago. We Hillary supporters know better and will not let the mass mediated construction of her identity as an evil person replace the reality-based knowledge that we have garnered using our own intelligence. Good luck with your continued deployment of right wing smear. You and your boy will be done after Feb. 5th. and he can go back to the Senate as a real disgrace to his party (which he shouldn't be involved with in the first place, given his special admiration for Reagan).
"I suggest you consider that all of the bilious vitriol that you Obama supporters are bandying about was crafted for you by the right wing."
Get your facts straight - the bilious vitriol is coming out of the Clinton machine and regrettably a lot of it from Bill. I don't hate the Clintons in fact I am very fond of Bill's presidency. However, like a lot of Dems, I've been really turned off at the Clintons negative twisting of Obama's statements and record and the Clinton campaign's race baiting tactics. If Hillary wins the nomination, I'll vote for her but will I go all out and campaign on her behalf - probably not.

It is extremely sexist and racist of Obama to ignore all the America outside South Carolina and just to focus whole week on South Carolina..
Obama's much prettier than Clarence Thomas, and Hillary too. Hillary sure was having a Bad Hair Day in Harlem.
Let's remember, this is a contest, and Hillary is playing the smartest she can. Good for her, I say, and it reinforces my belief that she is the best candidate. If this were truly a post-race world (which unfortunately it's not), we'd be clearly supporting the candidate with the best credentials (Hillary), and not somebody who, while a very strong #2, is running mainly on appeal of his race.
Well put, Scott.
To those of us whose lives were molded by the 60’s, for those of us who believed in, who marched, who 'sat in' for the dreams of great leaders like John F. Kennedy, Martin Luther King, and Bobby Kennedy, and for those of us whose dreams for a better tomorrow for each and every American suffered crushing blows with the assassinations of all three of these great men……NOW is our time to finally take the dream to the next level. It is time. Time to look forward, a time for change, a time for renewed hope. And a time to pass the torch to a new generation to carry on our dreams for unity, equality, and peace. I still believe. Vote Obama.
It's time for more than abstract, fluffy, content-free rhetoric.
It's time for real change.
Not for a rhetor-in-chief, but a commander-in-chief.
Not for a pontiff, but for a president.
Hillary now!
I find unfairness in the political system that is willing to give Obama a pass for his lack of experience and qualifications, based on race patronizing. I think that patronizing a person because of his or her race IS racism.
I do not believe that Obama deserves what is being handed to him as an essentially Affirmative Action promotion in the Democratic party and in the presidential primary race. Hillary Clinton is an excellent candidate, one who has worked very hard, both in the the Sentate and before. Further, all her 'negatives' were constructed for her adversaries on the left and right by the far right wing. I also find the misogyny directed at her to be deplorable. I will defend her when I can, not as a matter of chivalry, but rather as a matter of principle.
You just wrote a 100% correct history lesson that Gen Y should very quickly become familier with.
Karl Rove was on cspan Sun.01/20/08 reciting all the screw ups of the Obama record in the Il.Senate.He is now setting up the right wing list that will be used against him if he should get the nomination, but anyone who REALLY cares about this country will not let that happen.
Please WAKE up you Anti Hillary folks!!THe hate in the Repub party is a disease.I was once a A Cal. Rep. worked for some at the very top.Really disgusting. The best thing that's happened to America has been 8 years of the Clinton Presidency (there were human mistakes) but now the chance to have one of the most capable Women in our liftime clean up this mess left by Bush/Cheney, end the war and improve life for the Middle class, improve the economy, healthcare, education, energy.
Please look to the truth through this right wing haze.President Hillary is just right.
Bill Clinton has had a heart attack. Now we see him falling
asleep at major functions. Hillary has had more than one
'sobbing fest' featured on TV. Mainly because she was not
getting her way. Chelsea is attending various meetings with
these childlike parents but she refuses to speak even to a
10 year old little girl.
PLEASE TELL US...WHAT KIND OF A FAMILY IS THIS?
"As for Obama's supporters, I think they are politically naive and ideologically confused. And, they have no idea that the vitriol that they hold for Clinton was specially constructed for them by the far right wing."
There you go again. CEASE AND DESIST WITH THE DEFAMATION. What is it about the Clinton's supporters. Must they seek to defame and destroy everybody that disagrees with them.
Clinton has withstood a constant barrage of negative commentary--the likes of which would have sent Obama into a suicidal depression--and yet her supporters still see through the xxxx and support her.
There you go again. That was simply uncalled for.
"We know that all her so-called "negatives" were specially constructed by the right wing. Every one of the so-called "scandals" were completely fabricated by hers and her husband's political enemies, from {redacted} on down."
There you go again. That statement sounds extremely paranoid.
"...I suggest you consider that all of the bilious vitriol that you Obama supporters are bandying about was crafted for you by the right wing.
There you go again. Another grand conspiracy.
...You and your boy will be done after Feb. 5th. and he can go back to the Senate as a real disgrace to his party (which he shouldn't be involved with in the first place, given his special admiration for Reagan).
Oh my. He's a MAN, not a 'boy'. There is just so much venom and hate oozing out of you.
I agree, Vote for Bill and Hillary for President.
Bill and Hillary's co-presidency was the greatest presidency of modern times. They have the top three accomplishments of any modern president.
On the top 3 list:
TOP ACCOMPLISHMENT #3. After just two short hard years of work, in 1994 they gave us the first REPUBLICAN CONTROLLED SENATE in 6 years! Their corruption and malfeasance in office made for a huge 8 seat Senate swing that year to 53-47.
TOP ACCOMPLISHMENT #2. Also after just two short hard years of work, in 1994 they also gave us the first REPUBLICAN CONTROLLED HOUSE in 40 years! That's right 40 YEARS. It took a President to give us this accomplishment. It took a massive, mamoth 54 seat swing. The Republicans controlled the house 230 to 204.
RUNNER UP ACCOMPLISHMENT. They also gave us a 12 seat swing in Governorships that year.
and finally, the NUMBER ONE ACCOMPLISHMENT OF THE BILL AND HILLARY CO-PRESIDENCY ---
TOP ACCOMPLISHMENT #1. THEY GAVE US 8 YEARS OF REPUBLICAN GEORGE BUSH. This accomplishment was a bit harder. They had to damage the democratic reputation a lot more before they could achieve this herculean feat. But they did it in just 8 short years.
So remember, ONLY BILL AND HILLARY have the EXPERIENCE to give us this kind of CHANGE.
After all, what does Senator Obama promise us? All he promises us is CHANGE.
Bill and Hillary have promised us CHANGE, CHANGE, CHANGE. That's right, with Bill and Hillary, you get THREE TIMES THE CHANGE OF ANY OTHER PROGRESSIVE CANDIDATE!!!
Bill and Hillary promise to completely support and advocate your position on any issue for at least ten milliseconds of every day. There are a lot of citizens so that is all the time you get unless you are a large donor.
Bill and Hillary are also the only candidates to promise you to change their position at least three times in every sentence.
So in summary, please vote for Hillary. Only she has the experience to give us the changes this country so desperately needs.
The Clinton's are playing the media here to lower expectations for a SC win. They ARE campaigning in South Carolina, and will probably do well. I'm still hoping for Obama, but after New Hampshire, I'm not falling for the expectations game.
There I go again--saying what I want to say. And I will continue. Who are you to tell me what to say, NickAtNight?
