Spitzer meets the press corps during his campaign for governor.

A team of New York Times metro and investigation reporters and editors have been working since yesterday afternoon to break the story of Eliot Spitzer's alleged involvement with a prostitution ring, according to a newsroom source.

The group of editors were led by metro editor Joe Sexton, politics editor Mary Ann Giordano (former Observer managing editor!), metro political editor Carolyn Ryan and investigation editors Matthew Purdy, Kevin Flynn and Ian Urbina.

The team of reporters was led by Danny Hakim, the Albany reporter who was reporting in the city yesterday.

The group of reporters also included David Chen, a reporter out of the paper's Trenton bureau, and William Rashbaum, the paper's court reporter.

According to our source, editors and reporters, led mostly by Mr. Sexton and Ms. Girordano, were shuffling in and out of conference rooms and repeatedly calling field reporters deep into the night. It was especially rare for Mr. Sexton and Ms. Giordano to be in the office on a weekend night, with Mr. Sexton only "rarely" making appearences on Sunday nights, the source said.

The story went on their web site around 2 p.m. today, which since has been going on and off line.

At the building, a huge crowd has gathered near the paper's metro area on the third floor.

This memo, sent by metro editor, Peter Khoury, was just sent out as well: "Obviously, we're going to have much late news, thanks to the governor. So we really need you to file all nonrelated stories as early as possible. It's going to be a long night...."

Just got off the phone with Mary Ann Giordano: "I was the last person in the entire newsroom to find out about the story," she said. "I was at the gym when i found out. I was there yesterday working on national politics." With David Chen, it appears.

After reading the Times story, apparently they spent the night trying to spin the story as favorably as they could for a Democrat. The Times made a case for the Governor that his behavior was a private matter, and the Mann Act was 1. almost 100 years old, and 2. relfected the definition of immorality of a bygone era.
The Governor took an oath of office to uphold the laws of NY. It's not up to an elected official to decide which laws they would abide by and which they would not. The Governor should be impeached and face criminal prosecution.

Those who live in glass houses shouldn't be so quick to throw stones. His next statement should be, "Define prostitution. What is it really? And is this that?" It worked for his friend Bill Clinton. Uphold the law, but only for the rest of society, not yourself. Typical liberal. My sympathies to the NYT.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHAHAHAHA!!!

Already trying the Clinton approach -- it's "personal behavior." Elliot may not have committed repeated sexual assualts, but as a guy who formerly prosecuted perpetrators of prostitution as AG, he can hardly chalk this up to mere personal pecadillos.

Couple this with his other criminal behavior in using the state police to concoct bogus accusations against Joe Bruno, and it's plain that this arrogant, hypocritical piece of s-h-i-t "Steamroller" is getting exactly what he deserves.

Bye, bye a-s-s-h-o-l-e.

Spitzer always looked like a greasy, slimy, creepy individual, the sort you would want to wash after being near. So this is NO surprise to me! He's just like most other lawyer-types - they think the whole world is their oyster and they can do whatever they want to whomever they want whenever they want, and don't have to explain themselves to anybody. It's priceless to see these guys (and women too) caught with their pants down! Shakespearean karma! Love it! What a pig, just like the rest of them!

P. Chaim Schenck (not verified) says:

Eliot Spitzer's failure is not his alleged immorality. He used the strong arm of his office as Attorney General to harrass and illegally attempt to close down the volunteer network of Crisis Pregnancy Centers in NY becasue they offended the abortion lobby that paid for his campaigns.

He tried to force the Ancient Orde of Hibernians to admit homosexuals to their parade honoring a Catholic Saint.

He boasted that he would shut down the pro-life movement in NY, a mostly religous movement made up of a broad diversity of New York citizens.

Eliot Spitzer does not need an appointment with a prostitute to leave office - he had enough before these allegations to disqualify himself.

Al Sharpton (not verified) says:

CNN is already spinning this with having PSYCOLOGISTS and PSYCHIATRISTS saying that he just "needed to let emotions out"...and that he had to "hide is true feelings". I hope he's prosecuted, his wife divorces him and takes 1/2, and all 3 of his DAUGHTERS grow up to be high paid sluts. All of you moron new yorkers that voted this ARROGANT, SELF CENTERED, HIPPOCRITE need to have your heads examined. Either that, or stop watching CNN and MSNBC.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

He will not resign, he will not be impeached. Spitzer is indemnified against any wrongdoing by virtue of his political affiliation. He commited no racial crime, therefore is to be protected by the media elite. After all, how can he be all bad when he wishes to arbitrarily abrogate the 2nd amendment, you know, the one the Sourthern hicks, rednecks, racists and "little people" excercise. ALL HAIL THE POWER ELITE, THEY CAN DO NO WRONG!!! Pinchy Sulzberger Jr. loves him.

A few observations. This creep may be beyond shame. Most people are not . A man with three young daughters and a wife of twenty years should not want to hurt them and so would be subject to blackmail should his creepy bahavior become know to the wrong kind of people. These "wrong kind" tend to be found hanging around and running whore houses.Attorney Generals should not put themselves in such precarious positions,to do so shows horribly disqualifying judgement.Spitzer could not be trusted to drive a cab. Seven thousand dollars for sex.I've never spent that much for anything that didn't have four wheels and a transmission. Can you picture the Guv. having to put his pants back on ,remove the ball gag and find a cash machine because he was short fifteen hundred, talk about breaking the mood.Lets face it if he practiced safe sex he can still be our fearless leader,if he went bareback his ass is grass

Anonymous (not verified) says:

Well, I guess that rather than calling him Eliot Ness, from now on he should be known as Eliot P Ness!

Anonymous (not verified) says:

I work for a man Spitzer hates -- you can guess who if you like -- and I have to say there's no reason to wish his daughters any ill. They're suffering enough. Don't drag them through the mud and cause them any pain. Their dirtbag of a father has done enough of that, already. Imagine this piece of excrement walking you down the aisle? Those poor girls.

Uh, Spitzer was elected from AG to uphold the laws of NY. Spitzer in '04 was touting the arrest and prosecution of another prostitution ring in NY. Spitzer is a sleazebag and deserves any punishment he gets.

bible thumpers are not elected officials. And Rush Limbaugh was exonerated for any wrong doing.

Spitzer is a slime bag. His wife and children don't deserve the pain and suffering they are going to endure from the media.

A perfect day would have been if Silda, after his speech, had bent into the mic and said;

"I am filing for divorce and am going to take him for everything he has".
