The Marcus Brauchli Round-Up, Day 1

The Wall Street Journal reports today that after Marcus Brauchli formally announces his resignation—which could happen later today—he'll be replaced on an interim basis by publisher Robert Thomson. Thereafter, a search for a full-time replacement "would begin shortly, with candidates coming from both inside and outside the paper." The Journal also reports that Mr. Brauchli would stay on with Dow Jones either as a "consultant or an executive."

The Times reports that friends and colleagues of Mr. Brauchli were divided over whether he was leaving out of frustration, or whether he was forced out. At a dinner last night in Washington, Mr. Brauchli said "I can't talk" and Rupert Murdoch declined to comment. Two people "briefed on Brauchli's thinking" told the Times that Mr. Brauchli has been particularly frustrated that he had to oust some editors, an instruction from Mr. Murdoch who has been outspoken in his opposition to the paper's rigorous editing structure.
