Lipsky: 'Held Out Hope' For Sun Until This Afternoon
"I told the staff," said Seth Lipsky, editor of The New York Sun, "that I tend to be an optimist. And I held out hope for a favorable outcome as late as mid-afternoon today."
By 4 P.M., Mr. Lipsky was informing his staff that the Sun would fold, and tomorrow's edition would be their last.
"You know it has been the honor of my life to be in the harness with this group of journalists and I did what I wanted to do," he said.
Media Mob asked about how difficult it is to hang it up, particularly in the middle of an enormously important news day in New York.
"I agree, it’s a tremendous story, but I'm very focused on putting out tomorrow's paper," he said.
He said that the Sun would publish his comments to the staff on its Web site.
What a shame. Lipsky is a class act and a true newspaper man. The Sun was a shining example for all newspapers and editors. We have lost New York's last great newspaper. I will miss it dearly.
Delightful! The long-awaited fall of the New York Neo-Cons! I'll be happily toasting their demise tomorrow in exactly the spirit that their editor and staff toasted the U.S. invasion of Iraq --with delicious champagne! Now that Wall St. no longer exists; hopefully, that mean, nasty, Republican 'City Journal' will be next. De-lovely!

Anonymous, I am all in favor of ideological diversity in the media, but just how did the world-view of the *Sun* differ from that of the New York *Post*?
Cole: Like the economy and job market is so great that all you can care about is your viewpoint. Let's think about the addition of all the unemployed Staffer and how this affects their families. Does you find that "De-lovely" also? I disagree with your opinion so when will you not exist?
How sad, how true; no one wants to hire a Republican even as dog-catcher. If the talent is as brilliant as claimed, they will land new writing gigs with relative ease and can write about something less ideologically embarrassing --I suggest celebrity gossip.
The not-so-talented red-blooded neo-cons however, must be RESOURCEFUL --after all, they have been hectoring the poor with the same tired rhetoric for years --and start learning new skills; like glassblowing, herding, leathercraft, or artisanal lettuce farming –-surely a better use of their skills and, in the coming medieval-revival economy, profitable too!
Sorry latter-day free-speech fans, Cole & Co. are correct. The neo-con coverage was a failure, especially by their own standards (they literally couldn't give the paper away as a full-year free sub): since $$ (according to their ethos) is life's report card, well, gee, I guess they flunked.
