Luke Russert Apologizes for 'Dumb Comment' on Today Show

This morning, Luke Russert appeared on The Today Show to talk about his most recent dispatch on young people in politics. After airing the piece, which focused on young politically-engaged students at the University of Virginia, Today's Matt Lauer asked Mr. Russert some follow up questions about the demographics at the school.

At which point Mr. Russert said this: "You have to remember, the smartest kids in the state go there, so it's leaning a little bit towards Obama."

Conservative media watchdogs at Newsbusters were not amused.

And Mr. Russert promptly apologized on MSNBC's Web site:

Earlier this morning on the Today Show I misspoke and made what is without a doubt, quite simply a dumb comment.

Matt Lauer talked about UVA being a smart school and whether or not it could be considered a microcosm of Virginia at large. I said UVA had a lot of smart kids and so the school was leaning Obama. I MEANT to say that many of the kids who go to UVA are from affluent, highly educated households who are leaning Obama and hence their kids lean Obama. Plenty of smart college kids will vote for John McCain from UVA, and plenty of smart kids go to Virginia Tech or George Mason and they, too, could end up being big Obama voters.

Today was one of my first lessons in the perils of live television...lesson learned.

Talk about a slip. It's OK Luke, you're right - the smart kids ARE going to vote for Obama. Or at least the ones who can read and understand language.

Luke Russert need not apologize for stating the obvious. Anyone with the ability to define the word 'doctrine' as something other than 'world view' will NOT be voting for a ticket including Sarah Palin, a person stupider than Dan Quayle.

I read that Henry Kissinger was forced to spend an hour with 'WonderWoman'. I guess that was his sentence for crimes committed in his lifetime. It's long, painful road far away from the glory days of brilliant and stunning Julie Christie.

While Luke Russert appears to be a nice guy and has a parental background of some distinction, shouldn't he be doing an internship on a local station to learn and make mistakes. I think NBC is pandering on our pathos button. Journalism is learned in the trenches, not the peak of the mountain. Appreciate his apology, but would like more seasoned journalism.

No experience like frontline, Luke.
You survived this one, so chin up.

Best Wishes

Loved and respected his father's work for many years. He is truly a "Chip-off-the-old-block"! I saw the interview with Lauer as it happened and recognized Luke's mistake.
It was a valuable lesson learned and the kind of mistake that he will very probably repeat again at sometime in the future. Give him a break....I truly look forward to the work that this young man will produce in the coming years.
He learned from the very best that journalism ever ever produced.

I am soooo tired of everyone having to be politically correct in this country. God forbid anybody should be allowed to speak their minds anymore. George Orwell was dead on....Newspeak anyone?

Well good ole boy Luke ain't no Timmie, das fo sho!

He bolloxed it up again in his explanation... so now we're to believe that the affluent highly educated households all Obama? It's no less stupid than his on camera comment. Which makes him twice as dumb. I was gonna say someone is rolling in his grave, but I have way too much respect for the man.

Luke made a simple error in his words and that is to expected. He is doing an outstanding job and I know his dad would be so proud of him. I miss Tim Russert so very much, especially during this election period when I respected his views on everything. Their is definately a hole in political news coverage since Mr. Russert passed away. R.I.P. Tim

You have no room to question anybody's intelligence. Stupider is not a word, if you had the sense god gave a common dog you would have used proper english and said more stupid than Dan Quayle. You sir are the stupid one.

What could make more sense than to put people on TV who look like the people your trying to deceive? Like your father, you're are a nobody. Your a useful idiot used by the Jewish media to promote anti-white, Marxist policies. Wait until the minorities have the upper hand on you and your gullible white audience... Just wait and see how they treat you

Demophilus (not verified) says:

Why, what do you mean, BrianTim? Could you possibly mean that White people can expect the various "minorities" of the World to treat Whites at least as well as Browns treat each other in their own countries? Now why do you think people who have a long history of senseless brutality to THEIR OWN KIND would treat us badly? But, that's not how my sociology professor and the news said it would work out! White men are just supposed to die/give up and White women will breed with various Brown men and the future will be glorious! Just like the glorious past of the Third World. But what am I saying, its almost as if I believe in the old adage that "past prior performance is the best future indicator." Stupid me.

I think they'll be grateful for all we've given up for them, and immediately begin acting like a Protestant from New Hampshire. After all, ours is everyone's but theirs is theirs.

Look at all the African man has done for African women. Does any group on Earth have it better, thanks to the hard work and ingenuity of their menfolk? Muslim women should thank their men, if not for their crazy religious beliefs the general ugliness of the Arab woman would be apparent to all.

I just heard Luke Russert on Oprah say that "we shouldn't be worried about voter fraud (amongst other things)" What a complete idiot!! Friday, 17th October

Interesting comments....Luke, everyone makes mistakes, but it was pretty obvious throughout the election that you amongst others favored Obama. It was certainly tempting considering where we are in this wonderful country of ours; BUT, I for one voted for the man that I believed had the experience to bring us back NOT move us backward. I am very nervous about the direction of the country.....guess I'll just sit back and wait for my taxes to go up and continue to deal with the "freeloaders' that will continue to work the system. THANK YOU AMERICA!
