Rachel Maddow Gets 9 P.M. Show on MSNBC; Replaces Dan Abrams

Yesterday, Bill Carter of the New York Times broke the news that MSNBC is giving Rachel Maddow, their talented and popular 35-year-old liberal commentator, her own show, which will replace Dan Abrams' Verdict at 9 p.m. The new show, according to The Times, will start on Sept. 8. Mr. Abrams will stay on at the network as a legal correspondent and substitute anchor. His last show will be Thursday night.

Following Keith Olbermann's Countdown at 8 p.m., Ms. Maddow's new show will give MSNBC a solid two-hour block of liberal politics every weeknight, and will further solidify the cable news channel's unstated strategy of making itself the place for liberal political analysis in prime time.

More from the article:

MSNBC is highlighting the date, 9/8/08, connecting it to the start of the Olympics on 8/8/08, as a way to signal what the network’s president, Phil Griffin, said “will be the final leg of the political race this year.” He added, “We’re making that Rachel’s debut.”

Mr. Abrams, who is well liked at MSNBC, is expected to remain both there and at NBC News, where he is the chief legal correspondent. He will also serve as an anchor during some of MSNBC’s daytime coverage, as well as a substitute host on NBC's “Weekend Today” show.

The addition of Ms. Maddow as a prime-time host had been expected for some time. Only a month ago Mr. Griffin said she was at the top of the list to get a program at the network and was likely to secure one soon.

Mr. Olbermann introduced Ms. Maddow's new show on Countdown; clip above.

This is great news. Rachel will do well. She is so intelligent and fair in her approach to the news. It is a triumpth for MSNBC that they selected her to fill the void.

Good hunting, Rachel.

This is great news...I just wish they would keep Dan...put him on at 5pm so that we don't have to Chris Matthews shows so close together.

I knew something was up when they started putting so much more makeup on Maddow's manly face. Too bad they didn't replace Olberman with her.

What took them so long?

So MSNBC is now throwing out the window any semblance at all of balance or objectivity. I hear Keith Olbermann didn't like the fact that Abrams actually had people on who sometimes challenged the host's liberal views (something Olbermann is too much of a coward to do).
I actually liked Abrams' show and would channel surf between it and Hannity and Colmes. But Rachel Maddow? Forget it! She will essentailly be a female version of Olbermann, and who needs THAT? I predict her ratings will equal those of her liberal Air America show and Olbermann's own ratings --in other words, in the cellar!

I look forward to watching Rachel Maddow's new show. I love both Keith Olbermann and Dan Abrams and will miss Dan. As far as Keith's approach to the news, he is outraged. I share his feelings about how Bush has run this country. If the rest of you aren't outraged, you aren't paying attention. This is the most corrupt administration that I can remember in my 61 years!!!

Best of luck to Dan. Looking forward to Rachel's new show.

I like Rachel Maddow but I hate to see Dan Abrams go! I liked him when he was in Court TV and I like him now and I don't know why they repeat 2 times (2 and 4 pm) and they don't keep Abrams in one of the spot!
Shame on you MSNBC!!!
You lost a viewer!

Diana (not verified) says:

congrats to rachel but not happy at all to see dan go. i really enjoy watching his show. we have hardball on at 4 and 6 central time and countdown on at 7 and 9 surely the repeat of one of those could have been filled by dan's show!! will miss your show dan and good luck to you (and rachel)

Dan Abrams was one of the few really good hosts - if not the only one - on the evening lineup. He will truly be missed - his thoughtfulness, his wit, his fairness. Maddow consistently appears one-sided and this is a very disappointing change. I prefer to see a "host" - a real journalist!

Do you even know the definition of "corrupt"? You silly cow.

We love you Rachel. We know how low McCain can go, they use
Palin like a tool, they do not care that she is shallow and makes the party look trashy, like the hottest vip in Alaska.
We would like to hear more from the REAL QUEEN of ALASKLA.
She asked Intelligent questions, McCain should have look at her for VP!!
How does Cindy McCain feel knowing Sarah Palin feeds her husband higher than she every has ,seeing he speaks so highly of Sarah ,he forgot she was even on stage,or his going senile, because he said oh yeah my wife Cindy wasn't her speech good too ? was it? We can't remember The Barracuda supersexal ceaseless the whole champagne.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

Will Palin's daughter's baby-daddy be going into the Military Services also, to serve like his Maverick like his new to-be mother-in-law ?
Will she be able to still run as VP when she is indicted and have to go to jail ?
Will McCain ,Bush, and McPalin, now vote Democratic, since they now all agree with what Obama has been saying ?

AMERICAN VOTERS (not verified) says:

Are these white Woman polls ONLY? We are not being polled here. We are hard working, middle class, single, as well as married families,We are poor ,and somewhat alright for now,and we are ALL REGESTERED VOTERS, do we not count to them? Do not underestimate US, you will make a grave mistake.

Rachel/MSNBC,
I wish you lots of success in your new role. May you be blessed. Shame on all those folks who do not support you.
You are fair and straightforward!!
Continue with the TRUTH, and it will prevail!!!
Hang in there girl!!!

Spencer Coles (not verified) says:

Congrats on your new show. It's a must watch in my house. I do think McCain is not done yet. Imagine a last minute "Code Red Security Alert" (phony) instigated by the Bush gang. The American people would panic and vote for McCain. Possible?

rai (not verified) says:

Rachel Maddow talks like a child and no one can make sense in what she is trying to say. She don't have time to think deep before coming to her show. While everyone was excited that Gov. Sarah Palin finally came out to defend herself, she still find a negative point. It's hard to change a naturally-negative person.

My fater always say: "everything is fun so long it's happening to some else". I would recommend that some of those press and pundits try run for the Governor of their States, enter a debate, and let's see their approval rating.
