Tom Brokaw Calls in to Set the Record Straight

The Observer just spoke with Tom Brokaw who felt that our recent characterization of his role at NBC and stance towards MSBNC were inaccurate. At no point, said Mr. Brokaw, has he ever complained about the broad editorial environment of MSNBC to General Electric CEO Jeff Immelt, NBC Universal's president and CEO, Jeff Zucker, or NBC News' president, Steve Capus. Furthermore, Mr. Brokaw said he had in no way appointed himself as "the custodian of the Russert legend," as our source suggested.

Back in August, McCain campaign manager Rick Davis sent a letter to NBC News' Capus, complaining about NBC News' coverage of Mr. McCain's candidacy.

"We are concerned that your News Division is following MSNBC's lead in abandoning non-partisan coverage of the Presidential race," wrote Mr. Davis. "We would like to request a meeting with you as soon as possible to discuss our deep concerns about the news standards and level of objectivity at NBC."

Shortly thereafter reports surfaced that the McCain camp was actually considering pulling out of the presidential debate scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 7, to be moderated by Mr. Brokaw. Getting the opportunity to moderate a presidential debate is a major honor. Losing that opportunity would be a major disappointment. But according to Mr. Brokaw, he has since spoken with senior level McCain advisers, who assured him they had no issue with him moderating the debate. "There's no problem there," said Mr. Brokaw.

So Brokaw will be a butt kissing at the debates to appease the McCain camp. What a crock of horse manure this is, the RNC has been doing this reverse psychology for the pass 2 elections and the Dems & Media fall for it every time. So now they got what they wanted again and the debate on NBC will be a sorry joke, thanks to Brokaw's butt kissing to the McCain camp

Joshua (not verified) says:

Mr. Brokaw must ask HARD policy driven questions to McCain.

How is McCain's Economic policy different than Bush other than Drill! drill! drill!
????

I've been following this election VERY closely and i have NO idea. Seriously, I HAVE NO IDEA how McCain's Economic Policy is different that George W BUSH--- its really really SAD that i haven't heard about this.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

I think they ought to back out of it. Having 2 debates moderated by liberals is plenty enough. If Obama can punk out of townhalls McCain should be able to punk out on this. Brokaw is just a classier Chrissy and Olbie. Now how did that lipstick joke go? Well I think they need to throw in a bow and some perfume for this one. Brokaw is not quite as obvious in his "Man Crush" as the other 2, but he's getting there

Then it must really scare you that Obama is not going to push his tax plan until the economy gets better. Anybody but a Lib/Dem knows that he knows his economic plan is a disaster and would put the country in the tank. If this wasn't true he would try to get his plan in immediately

Now I know why they removed Keith and Chris from anchoring the election and put that tool David Gregory in the chair instead.

McCain would not have tried this bull if Russert were still alive. Russert would have called them out a long time ago and we would have had a real debate about real issues.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

The NBC Brand is not what it used to be. The bias at both channels is disappointing. We always knew Matthers leanings but this cycle he has become a democratic operative and hack.

Arturo (not verified) says:

Russert, Democrat. Matthews, Democrat. Olbermann, Leninist/Democrat. Brokaw has no problem with that.

Why the hell should Republicans appear in front of him? Democrats wouldn't let Rush ask them questions.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

Keith and Chris are gone for reasons that should be obvious to any fair-minded person. They were unfair and biased to a disturbing extent. They had become personally involved in Obama and his campaign to such an extent that no shred of objectivity remained. They lost my viewer-ship early in the primaries, when I was still deciding which Democrat to back. I was shocked at the daily bludgeoning Hillary was subjected to, and by the regular dose of starry-eyed hero worship directed at Obama. I have never seen anything like it. Opinion and editorial, and worse, propaganda, presented as "news". Now, Obama and his campaign are reaping what they have sown. If you enjoy the ride to the top as a rock star, or cultural sensation, you must also prepare for the crash when the giddy love affair becomes sober, and the screaming groupies move on to the next cool "thing".

Anonymous (not verified) says:

So, if he didn't say anything did GE/NBC executives use Brokaw? Was he their dodge to hide behind the changes they made at MSNBC? Does Tom like being used? How is a parent company that's a defense contractor supposed to cover its tracks? Anybody got any answers?

Is it just me (not verified) says:

It seems that NBC has used up all it credibility in the care and feeding of Keith, Chris, and Now Rachel. Until NBC shuts down that loser, why would anyone want to bother with them.

That well is poisoned,

Rich Truesdell (not verified) says:

While I watch both MSNBC and Fox, and I do this as a means to try to get different perspectives on important issues, in their efforts to outfox Fox (am I trying to be too cute here), I believe that MSNBC has gone too far in the last two months of covering the election, especially in the comparative ways they covered each convention.

Do get me wrong, I enjoy it when Keith goes off like an out-of-control train, and attacks Bush, but he has now absolutely no objectivity at all when it comes to the GOP. His gushing for almost anything Democratic or concerning Obama, makes what passes as news coverage over on Fox seem objective and fair in comparison. (It pains me to say that.)

Many times I have stated that Fox should be sued for false advertising every time they say they are "fair and balanced" and that hasn't changed. We've come to expect partisanship from Fox; it's part of who they are and what they do, a mouthpiece for the Republican Party. But from any news organization that has NBC as part of their name, we expect more and here MSNBC continues to come up short, even blurring further the line between news reporting and political commentary.

The steps that were taken last week with respect to Keith and Chris -- who I actually thought has been fairly restrained in comparison to Keith -- were unfortunately necessary if NBC and MSNBC are to retain any credibility over the next 60 days as the campaign heats up.

More important, with the likeable and balanced Dan Abrams having been replaced by Rachel Maddow, who I once liked, the shift to the left will be even more pronounced. Her commentary during the GOP convention, and the disdain she clearly showed, especially with respect to Sarah Palin, caused me to lose a tremendous amount of respect for her; so much so that I haven't yet even sampled her new show. I know that Rachel is a very intelligent and astute analyst, but based on what I saw of her covering the GOP Convention, she's now Keith Olbermann lite or Keith in a pants suit.

Was Mr. Brokow used as a tool by the NBC corporate brass in all of this? Probably, but he's a big boy and if he helps restore a sense of reason and balance to NBC News, can that be a bad thing?

Anonymous (not verified) says:

So, you must agree the FOX well is poisoned? Fair and balanced? Ya gotta be kidding. True, political biases have become obvious in the "news". It's not news; it's commentary given by people who opinionated. Read the candidates websites and learn their positions and plans. Break it down. Challenge them to be explicit. That's the only way to educate yourself.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

Newscasters aren't what they used to be and need to be. But their hands are tied by the corporations that own them, and an adminstration that also binds their hands and disallows "follow up", pertinent questions. If Keith and or Chris went overboard, at least they get people thinking one way or the other. They engage thought and conversation. AND anyone who thinks there are more liberal media outlets and positions out there is simply crazy. Because of that, sometimes they overcompensate for the lack of outlets. If the media were fair, they'd tell the truth and vet Sarah Palin in public instead of pandering to the Republican machine. If they don't "out" her, who will?

Anonymous (not verified) says:

Who you calling a punk? Just because Obama won't dance to McDumb tune and his corrupt pansies. Folks got to be real stupid to get caught in a corrupt vicious cycle by McDumb and company.

Fox News is not fair and balanced, "Fake and Corrupt"!

How many G.E. lobbiest work for McCain ?

Seth (not verified) says:

Sadly the media has leaned liberal for some time. Just looke at Bernard Goldberg's book Bias. I believe debates are great for our country. There should be an even number of them and have the moderator for half of them chosen by the democratic nominee and the moderator for the other half chosen by the republican nominee. I believe that when the debate is carried on all channels in front of a national audience the moderators both democratic and republican will be on their best behavior and act in a non-partisan manner.

RocketScience (not verified) says:

Russert? Give me a break. RIP to him and his ilk.

Brokaw should die already. Olbermann needs liquidating.

Sucks, doesn't Dems, to have 2004 and 1988 repeating itself, doesn't it??

Ha ha, suckers!

Anonymous (not verified) says:

Brokaw should die already?!?!?! WHAT KIND OF BUTT HOLE ARE YOU?!?!?! THAT IS AN ABSOLUTELY THOUGHTLESS AND HORRIBLE THING TO SAY!!! It is one thing to be on one side of the fence or the other when it comes to political issues, but that is THE most ignorant irresponsible thing ANYONE young or old could say. I can only hope your words don't come back to haunt you and it is you who ends up in dire straits!!! IDIOT!!!

RocketScience (not verified) says:

People like you need to be liquidated. A shame we can't have brown shirts trash your home and take you to a concentration camp.

Denise Lockwood (not verified) says:

The RNC's number one move in their playbook is... if I can't answer the question or don't want to answer question -(no matter how valid it may be) default to whining. Ohhh... you guys aren't being fair. Whah whah whah.

My answer: Suck it up buttercup.

Don't confuse news with entertainment people!

Brokaw absolutely knows how to ask questions that are valid and pertinent. Saying that Brokaw isn't fair with his questions is like saying Rush Limbaugh and Ober-what's his face are credible sources of accurate information. Geez people, this is a diversion. I'd say, if the McCain or Obama camp don't like Brokaw's brand, go else where then and stop tolerating this obvious manipulation. If all of us journo's did this, then they'd get nothing and the whining would have no media coverage at all.. hmmm novel idea.

Do NOT give in. Call them on their stuff... that's what we do.

Monica (not verified) says:

Hmm,,, interesting.. you don't see Senator Obama complaining about the Fox News Network 'Fair & Balanced' coverage...

In fact, he even sat in with O'Reilly , knowing damn well that Bill O & the rest of the Fox News clowns have called Obama a terrorist... I think its sad & unfair...

Voter!! RU? (not verified) says:

News coverage in this country won't be "fair or unbiased" as long as the people reporting it are payed and treated like celebrities. If you make a million dollars, you have to answer to someone for your every move. Just be smart and spread your time around. You've got to listen to them all, as much as it may hurt at times. Sadly, the days of old, where reporters just reported the news are gone.

Denise Lockwood (not verified) says:

While Brokaw and a few others may be an exception, most journos make less than a teacher does their first year. Really. It's true. And... here's another novel concept, sigh, O'Reilly, Ober-what-his face, the guy that claims to be "independent" and Rush are NOT journalists. They have no obligation to report anything as is. They are all trying to get an emotional response to a public dialogue that has sadly lost its appetite for logic and truth.

RU, I'd have to agree with you in your last statement. We are few and far between because somehow along the way, newspapers and television started mixing together and they started being traded on the stock market, then the internet came along and people started trying to validate their own ideas and not trying to understand the issues at hand. Then, we no longer sought to experience what is... and we opted for what we wanted things to be.

And now we no longer seek to understand one another. How many times have you had a friendly argument void of emotion, but was rather based on an interest in understanding the perspective.

That's the attitude that kills newspapers and democracy, the mere act of engaging in public discourse.
