Meet 'The 100'

On the evening of June 25, The New York Observer hosted an awards party at the Four Seasons on 52nd Street to honor the 100 Most Powerful People in New York Real Estate.

Governor David Paterson and Mayor Michael Bloomberg both spoke, following brief introductions by Observer publisher Jared Kushner. (Mr. Bloomberg noted that his second-place finish on the Top 100 was the only No. 2 position he would ever accept--hint, hint, Messrs. Obama and McCain.) The rest of the evening was given over to drinking, snacking and—of course!—networking among a genuine Who’s Who of not only local real estate but local power, plain and simple.

Collectively, this crowd owns or controls much of the city’s physical landscape.

It included a mix of real estate Type A’s like Jerry Speyer, Dolly Lenz, Bill Rudin, Mort Zuckerman, William Macklowe and Michael Shvo; and city officials and politicos like Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe, M.T.A. executive director Lee Sander, acting Empire State Development Corporation CEO Avi Schick, and Planning Director Amanda Burden.

There were also representatives of that increasingly influential real estate constituency: bloggers! Norman Oder of the Atlantic Yards Report and Lockhart Steele of the Curbed Network. And there were the all-important restaurateurs like Giuseppe Cipriani and Danny Meyer. And Columbia President Lee Bollinger; and Trinity Church Rector James Cooper; and New York Post managing editor Steve Cuozzo.
