Obama Campaign Reponds to Clinton's Criticism of Wright

Earlier today the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review published an interview with Hillary Clinton in which she said of Barack Obama's pastor Jeremiah Wright:

"He would not have been my pastor," Clinton said. "You don't choose your family, but you choose what church you want to attend."

Obama spokesman Bill Burton just responded:

“After originally refusing to play politics with this issue, it’s disappointing to see Hillary Clinton’s campaign sink to this low in a transparent effort to distract attention away from the story she made up about dodging sniper fire in Bosnia. The truth is, Barack Obama has already spoken out against his pastor’s offensive comments and addressed the issue of race in America with a deeply personal and uncommonly honest speech. The American people deserve better than tired political games that do nothing to solve the larger challenges facing this country."

The exchange is taking place in the context of a broader, ongoing push on the Wright issue by Clinton and her supporters, including, so far, Lanny Davis, Joe Wilson and Niall O'Dowd.

Playing politics? What was she supposed to say?
I am not a Hillary fan but she is correct with her comment. With the racist diatribes by the Pastor Wright and now his replacement, there is deep seeded racisim within that church.

There is no way Obama didn't know what was being said in that church. If it was a white church, it would be billed nothing less then a racist church as it should be. Since it's a black church, the diatribes suddenly become part of black culture.
It's racist to me

TW (not verified) says:

BTW, I personally do not care about the alledged sniper fire. I do care about the way white America is being portrayed to the black community. Sniper fire doesn't affect me, racisim does. Especially since there are many affirmative action laws in place to right the wrongs of the past.

There seems to be plenty of stories being made up by both candidates.

Thesis of Obama commment: Let's change the subject.

Nice try, camp ObamaX.

Obama is a racist militant Marxist, straight out of the Malcolm X, Nation of Islam school of theology.

You don't attend this radical leftist anti American so-called place of worship for some 20 years and somehow get a pass - even by the liberal media.

Obama needs to either loudly denounce his church (i.e. LEAVE) or he's toast. He will get flattened like a grilled cheese sandwich in the general if he contines to triangualte this scandal. The GOP is salivating.

Go Hil!

SG (not verified) says:

The fact that Obama belatedly spoke out regarding his pastor's teachings does not lay the matter to rest. I know many people have fallen all over themselves in hailing the speech as an eloquent commentary on race in America, but it did little to explain the judgment he showed in staying in that poisonous environment or his unwillingness to confront such wrong-headedness. On the contrary, he used his own grandmother as a diversion, slickly equating Wright with a harmless soul who had a big hand in raising him. I regret voting for Obama in my state's primary. Unfolding events have since made it clear to me that he would be a disaster in any executive role. Whether enough people recognize that before the election is anybody's guess.

Now that she's been caught in a bold face LIE, Shrillary has a comment about Pastor Wright. The spotlight is on you now and that INTENTIONAL lie you told all of America. Bill Clinton talked about a FAIRY TALE and you said WORDS do matter: well the FAIRY TALE is your non-existent EXPERIENCE and your WORDS don't mean anything because you're a LIAR. Didn't you know that there are tapes of EVERYTHING?????????????? Or didn't you think they'd check? DUH!

none of this changes the fact that Obama sat in that church for 20yrs. It's not about family (even if you're willing to throw racist grannie under the bus) you don't choose your family. But you do choose your pastor. But he not only choose Wright... he stayed with him through all the hate filled rhetoric, the black liberation theology/ racial supremacism, then titled his book after him, called him a "mentor" and his "sounding board".

Obama either agreed with Wright and his liberation theology or he was being disingenuous and joined the church for political gain. Now,when politically a liability, he says he doesn't agree?

Well he agreed with Wright when he joined and he is being disingenuous now or he was disingenuous then and being honest how... either way, it isn't very honest. More likely he was disingenuous then and is also being disingenuous now.

I love how everyone who doesn't like obama is suddenly a racist. Finally most of the democratic party is seeing what it is like to debate a modern progressive who debates with emotion rather than reason.
Good luck with that PA... I moved to TX.

Has Hil's pastor spoken out against lying? Because both she and Bill should have just got up and left the church when the pastor spoke out against lying.

Truth Hurts (not verified) says:

I think it is crazy and irresponsible that so many people have taken what the media, mostly Fox News, a Republican media outlet (www.foxacttacks.com), has put out as truth. What has been reported was definitely distorted. CNN finally added the full sermon on their blog site thanks to a responsible unbiased journalist. Once heard in context, the statements from this Pastor make sense. People may not agree with his views, but that's the beauty of America we don't have to all agree. Or so I thought.
If I were to say "...I HATE YOU..." and those three words were all you heard, you would not feel too good about me. But in actuality you missed the whole sentence of "I like you and I HATE YOU missed the broadcast." It is just that simple. Media used certain parts of a 40 minute sermon out of context to sway votes. They just disregarded the fact that this Pastor has been serving his community and abroad for over 30 years. His Church is full of celebrities, doctors, lawyers, unemployed and working class people who love this Pastor, his message and their Church. They are out doing for themselves and helping others regardless of color.
I watched the Church online this past Sunday. It was packed; Blacks and some Whites, and if I'm not mistaken a White man joined. It is obvious that trying to destroy this Pastor and Church is a political ploy to make Barack Obama seem to be something he is not. There is nothing hateful or racist about this Pastor or his church.
The media has a responsibility to report the news fair and with facts. To be able to defame a Pastor and his Church, locally as well as on a national scale is totally not right. By playing 15 second sound bytes over and over and over out of context is really cruel. I think media and anyone else who talked badly of this Pastor and his church needs to apology. Trying to destroy someone all in the name of politics is shameful.
Here's one of the links to the full sermon http://ac360.blogs.cnn.com/2008/03/21/the-full-story-behind-wright%e2%80...

www.thedemocrat.com www.realclearpolitics.com Koch
Be clear, White voters that were going to vote for Obama are still going to vote for Obama. Why, because they have sense enough to seek out the facts. I think it is truly irresponsible and surprising that so many people have taken what the mostly Republican media outlets have said as truth. What has been reported was definitely distorted. CNN finally stepped up and added the full sermon on their blog site thanks to a responsible unbiased journalist, unlike Fox's national news who continued to play a 15 second sound byte , out of context, over and over, day after day for over two weeks. Once the full sermon is heard in context, the statements from Pastor Wright are in no way racist statements. Some may feel that his words were a little harsh, and maybe they were, to someone not use to being in a Black Church and listening to a Black Pastor. But in no way were his words racist. People may not agree with Pastor Wright’s views, but that's the beauty of America we don't have to all agree, or so I thought.
If I were to say "...I HATE YOU..." and those three words were all you heard, you would not feel too good about me. Imagine hearing those 3 words over and over from me in your head day after day with no clarification. But, in actuality you missed my whole s sentence which was "I like you and I HATE YOU missed the broadcast." It is just that simple. Media used certain words of a 40 minute sermon, out of context to sway voters. They just disregarded the fact that Pastor Wright has served our country in the US Military, and that he has been serving his community and abroad for over 30 years. They disregarded the fact that he is a respected scholar and invited to the White House by Bill Clinton during his administration. They also disregarded the fact that his congregation consist of celebrities, physicians, politicians, attorneys, unemployed and working class people, seniors, youth and disabled people who love this Pastor, his message and their Church. They are all working to better themselves and helping others regardless of color. Trinity UCC has grown to over 8,000 members under Pastor Wright’s leadership. Are all of these parishioners hate-filled racist? I think not.
I watched Trinity UCC online this past Sunday. The church was packed; Blacks and some Whites. It is obvious that the media is trying to destroy Pastor Wright and his Church. So what if someone doesn’t understand his preaching style. Obviously, the over 8,000 people who attend Trinity in some way do understand it, and don’t have a problem with it. Media is just trying to sway the votes…we have to think for ourselves. There is nothing hateful or racist about Pastor Wright or Trinity United Church of Christ.
The media has a responsibility to report the news fair, unbiased and with facts. To be able to defame a Pastor and his Church, locally as well as on a national scale is totally unjust. By portraying Pastor Wright and his Church in such a negative way, especially as he retires, is beyond cruel. I think media and anyone else who joined in on this character assassination of Pastor Wright and Trinity should apologize, like yesterday. Trying to destroy someone all in the name of politics is shameful. Yes, God Bless America and give us a heart!

Would you like another perspective on Wright? Here's a statement from Hillary Clinton's minister:

A STATEMENT CONCERNING THE REV. JEREMIAH WRIGHT

The Reverend Jeremiah Wright is an outstanding church leader whom I have heard speak a number of times. He has served for decades as a profound voice for justice and inclusion in our society. He has been a vocal critic of the racism, sexism and homophobia which still tarnish the American dream. To evaluate his dynamic ministry on the basis of two or three sound bites does a grave injustice to Dr. Wright, the members of his congregation, and the African-American church which has been the spiritual refuge of a people that has suffered from discrimination, disadvantage, and violence. Dr. Wright, a member of an integrated denomination, has been an agent of racial reconciliation while proclaiming perceptions and truths uncomfortable for some white people to hear. Those of us who are white Americans would do well to listen carefully to Dr. Wright rather than to use a few of his quotes to polarize. This is a critical time in America's history as we seek to repent of our racism. No matter which candidates prevail, let us use this time to listen again to one another and not to distort one another's truth.

Sen. Clinton's Own Religious Cult Includes Brownback, Santorum

Given Sen. Clinton's remarks today concerning Sen. Obama's choice of pastor, it's about time the cult of religious fanatics to which she belongs got wider notice. In September of last year Mother Jones ran this piece about The Fellowship, a group to which she belongs and which includes right wing fanatics such as former Sen. Santorum and noted bigot Sen Brownback.

It's time she stepped down. She has done nothing but embarrass herself and the Democratic Party, driving deep divisions that may cost the election and result in a disaster unlike we have yet to imagine.

The ruling class, having profited hugely from their puppet, the current President, has totally bought off Sen. McCain. He wants to cut their taxes further, continue their war, continue policies that will never reverse climate change and leave us with even less health care then before.

Sen. Clinton is part of the same crowd. She is not to be believed. Use the word, "dissemble " or "disingenuous," if you will, but let's call it what it really is. She's a liar, most recently about her trip to Bosnia.

Read that Mother Jones article carefully and then send it out to all your friends, especially the Clinton supporters. It's shocking.

She is not a progressive, she isn't even a liberal. She's more of the same, and prays alongside religious lunatics. She has no right to criticize Obama, her fellow cultists have done more damage to this country than any lone African-American preacher could ever dream of, even if he wanted to.

Sen. Obama doesn't have to project what it would be like to run against a Republican, he's running against one from his own party.

from BTD

Barack Obama is out there having his campaign argue that mail in voting has some type of impact that requires a Voting Rights Act review that could be troubling. That it will take more than a rubber stamp. Let''s be clear, if the implication is this is just filling out a form, then no one would be bringing this up. Even the time frame is not a particular problem. No, Barack Obama is intimating that HE will raise a Voting Rights Act issue about mail in voting.

The SAME Barack Obama who is co-sponsor of the Senate version of this bill, "The Universal Right To Vote By Mail Act", which declares that NOT ALLOWING mail in voting in every state (28 do through absentee balloting) disenfranchises voters, now opposes a mail in revote. I have heard of chutzpah, but this one takes the cake.

Patricio (not verified) says:

It seems to me the Democrats have two candidates that are having a hard time remembering facts. Your party loves to label McCain as Senator Senile, however, Hillary and Barack are having senior moments of their own. For a young, inexperienced man, that is not a good thing. It seems the good senators "forgot" about the real amounts of money the soon to be convicted Rezco provided, or that he had actually attended a few services when the good Reverend went on about how bad America is and white folks are inherently racists. If he wants to rise above that, then don't expose the (his) next generation to it...

Then Ms. Clinton "forgot" that there is always file footage somewhere of a First Lady gaining foreign policy victories and getting that essential "experience", sans sniper fire.

They are both weak. Spin it anyway you like, it's ugly. Maybe Al will ride in for a rescue.

Do you have any idea what it takes to have an off the cuff mail in vote..Maybe you should read up on the process first before you open your mouth to speak. It takes money, the state has to verify the accurate names, addresses, etc..and do you want your ballot going thru the mail to an anybody that is not associated with the State voting Commission who could tamper with it one way or the other. THINK PEOPLE....with your mind not your emotions.

our constitutional premise of "church and state".

Ron Wilson (not verified) says:

As followers of Jesus Christ empowered by the Holy Spirit, true Christians say and pray “God Bless America,” and many are now saying and praying “God Please Help the US.” However, the Holy Spirit of God would never inspire a true follower of Jesus Christ to say or pray “God Damn American” in any context, much less as part of a taped public sermon.

Holy Scriptures say to test the spirits (1 John 4:1). Reverend Wright obviously has a fiery spirit that is condemning at times, particuarly when he curses our nation in public sermons and says spooky things like "your pegions are coming home to roost." It is certaintly not Christ-like or characteristic of the Holy Spirit.

Sentor Obama apparently agrees with Reverend Wright in spirit, though he does not say “God Damn America.” However, most of his life he has trusted and tollerated this particular pastor, which is almost scary. Although Reverend Wright is retiring, he will remain as Senior Pastor, and his replacement essentially agrees with him in spirit and truth. Senator Obama must agree with him, at least in spirit.

There is reason to not trust the spirit in which Reverend Wright made such remarks, and so there is reason to question the spirit leading the youthfull Senator Obama as a professed Christian and prospective president of our nation. May God’s Holy Spirit be our guide.
