Obama's New Refrain is Deval Patrick's Old One

One small Obama-related detail from last night: The "Yes we can!" refrain that Barack Obama trumpeted in his concession speech was actually the campaign theme adopted by Deval Patrick, a top Obama supporter who rode the slogan to the Massachusetts governorship in 2006. Patrick, the first African-American governor in Massachusetts history, showed a cross-partisan appeal similar to Obama's in '06, winning strongly even in Republican areas in his 20-point triumph. Patrick campaigned for Obama in New Hampshire over the weekend and was in attendance at his campaign party in Nashua tonight.
...and even before that, "Yes We Can" was Obama's old refrain in his 2004 senate race. I'm glad it's back -- it's time.

It actually dates back to Caesar Chavez and Dolores Huerta of the Farmworker's movement. Of course, they said it in the original Spanish.
re: rdn's comment - it's amazing that nobody has bothered today to go back and check the archives from 2004 to see if, in fact, Axelrod is right when he claims that Deval Patrick used the line two years after Obama.

That's Cesar Chavez. In many ways, the Mexican Martin Luther King Jr. At the same time MLK Jr was fighting for blacks, he was fighting for Latinos.
Barack Obama says "yes we can." There's a YouTube video about those words as if they are Obama's.
Yet somehow this is acceptable?
Is this why the plagerism charge died down? Obama was credited for using the "Yes, We Can" in 2004 and Duvall Patrick used it in 2006? I suggested using "We Can" as the winning slogan for Democrats in the 2004 election on 1 June. I don't speak Spanish and I never heard of it before.
