Rangel on the Role of Superdelegates

Charlie Rangel, a major supporter of Hillary Clinton, is joining Chuck Schumer and a growing number of superdelegates who think the Democratic nominee should reflect the popular vote, not the will of the superdelegates.

From Newsday:

"It's the people [who are] going to govern who selects our next candidate and not superdelegates," Rangel said last night at a dinner for the New York State Association of Black and Puerto Rican Legislators conference in Albany.

"The people's will is what's going to prevail at the convention and not people who decide what the people's will is," he added.

The official Clinton campaign position remains that she will go all the way to the convention with the idea that superdelegates--and Florida and Michigan delegates the campaign hopes to get seated--will give her enough votes to win the nomination even if Obama has more pledged delegates.

well, on meet the press on sunday-2/17, schumer said the opposite of rangel. his comments prompted me to send an email to his office, expressing my disappointment in his position. discounting the will of the american public will not bode well for the dnc in november.

if super delegates were supposed to vote in line with their respective states' primary/caucus results, there would not have been any reason to create them. their purpose at the creation was to make independent judgments and serve as something like a check on the passions of the rank and file voters. even if one believes that this is an undemocratic feature in the Democratic Party's selection process, right now it is part of the rules of the game. Changes must come after the election.

Respectfully, the New York County, New York State, and National Democratic Committees all have "appointed" members created to "balance" the ELECTED MEMBERS! If it is WRONG for the so-called "Super Delegates" to vote other than what voters wanted, than tell me why I my "one man, one vote" IS NOT THAT because no matter who we vote directly to put on the County, State, or National Committees of MY PARTY that ELECTED me to BOTH PARTY and GOVERNMENT POSTS, these groups cans "add on" UN-ELECTED MEMBERS! Blacks and Women, and now gays and Lesbians and Chinese, Hispanics, and other "minority catalogies" have and are constantly added when they FAIL TO GET ELECTED to Democratic Party Committees at all levels. NOW WE HEARD THIS "IN THE MIDDLE OF THE RACE" ARGUMENT! If the Democratic Party actually falls for this total phony double-talk they will get slaughtered in the GENERAL ELECTION. People are NOT STUPID, and the lunatics of the Democratic Party "activists" and "Minority this and that Power group" ARE NEVER GOING WIN AN ELECTION ONLY CAUSE THE CONSERVATIVE REPUBLICANS TO WIN ELECTIONS! And Donna Brazile - She couldn't get elected president of a dog lovers' club - and she sure helped AL GORE! What a bunch of jerks!

Barbara (not verified) says:

If the DNC's contention is that the superdelegates know better and have been created to keep the electorate in check, then I'm done. There's no point in voting. Good luck!
