Baby on Board! Palin's Unhelpful Story
Families deserve privacy about family matters, but families that want absolute privacy should probably stay out of politics. Sooner or later someone would have noticed the pregnancy of Bristol Palin, 17-year-old daughter of John McCain’s vice presidential pick, especially since everyone in her hometown of Wasilla, Alaska, seemed to know already. The question that remains is what, if anything, her plight may portend for the rest of us.
With all due respect to this young woman, her future husband and the rest of the family—and best wishes to all of them for a successful birth—let us first stop pretending that this is good news. There are excellent reasons why we discourage teenage pregnancy and motherhood, and none of them have disappeared simply because the Republicans are about to put Sarah Palin on their ticket.
Adolescents are rarely prepared to take on the challenges of raising a child. Often they drop out of school as a result, and usually become dependent on their own parents for support (which may be complicated for a family whose mom is running for vice president). Pregnancies in adolescence are often high-risk, and the babies born to teenage mothers tend to have more illnesses during their first year of life. Teenage marriages—whether or not they occur because of an unplanned pregnancy—have a tendency to work out poorly, too. (“I don’t want to have kids,” says Bristol Palin’s prospective husband on his MySpace page, according to the New York Post, and at his age, why would he?)
But such is life in the red states, where sensible sex education and availability of contraceptives are discouraged for adolescents, even though they are just as sexually active as teenagers everywhere else. Despite the supposed religious morality of the evangelical right-wingers who today regard themselves as the base of the Republican Party, rates of teenage pregnancy and divorce tend to be higher in their domain than elsewhere in America. To the extent that their values would dominate for another four years of Republican rule, those pathologies can be expected to prevail. During the past four years of the Bush administration, teen pregnancies have increased for the first time since 1990, when they began a 14-year decline.
That is why the story of Bristol Palin raises a serious public policy issue. If we have acquired too much information about her, we may not yet have learned quite enough about her mother (just like those hapless vetters of her candidacy in the McCain campaign).
It seems fair to assume, however, that Sarah Palin’s enthusiasm for “abstinence-only” sex education, which is shared by Mr. McCain, helped to cause her daughter’s misfortune. As a politician who insists on lecturing adolescents to abstain without teaching them about contraception, she may never have informed Bristol how to protect herself from an unwanted pregnancy and sexually transmitted disease. Her views on reproductive rights—including opposition to abortion even in cases of rape and incest—are too extreme even for Mr. McCain.
The Alaska governor probably assumed that her daughter—no doubt a regular churchgoer like the rest of the family—was saving herself for marriage according to religious doctrine. Meanwhile, daughter Bristol probably understood that Mom, loving but strict and deeply dogmatic, was the last person she dared to ask for advice on birth control.
Surely Sarah and Todd Palin as well as their church gave Bristol a clear message that she should avoid premarital sex. But what we know now is abstinence-only education, whether at school or in the home, fails at least as often as it succeeds. The religious morality of the evangelical right, preaching the return of the sexual mores of decades ago, is no more likely to succeed. If we are to protect young men and women against the consequences of their desire—and reduce the rate of abortion, which people like the Palins supposedly abhor—then we ought to be making comprehensive sex education and contraceptives available to everyone.

Thus it is no surprise that Conason looks at the pregnancy of Bristol Palin and declares that abstinence education does not work. This is just plain silly.
Abstinance works, but in such a hyper sexualized culture, it is difficult to achieve. So while mainstream Americans would like to see our culture softened, and have morality brought back, Conason and his far left loonies want to hand out condoms to every child. God Help Us.
Mr. Conason, the unwanted pregnancy of a teenage daughter can happen to any family, no matter how hard parents try to protect and teach their children positive moral values. Teenagers are going to do what teenagers want to do; I am a high school teacher of 25 years and have known many, many young girls from every kind of family that this has happened to. And I will tell you this - at no other time does a daughter need her parent's love and support more. Bristol is lucky to have the parents she has.
I have been appalled at the attacks the main stream media has bombarded Sarah Palin with. Most it it downright lies. It would be like the conservative media broadcasting to the world that Barack Obama has sexually molested his daughers. That is how very insane, how intent the mainstream media is on destroying Sarah Paylin.
I am in independent who, after I read this post by Mr. Conason, is now voting McCain/Paylin. Mr. Conason and the rest of the media has pushed me over the edge.

I did one time get my wife PG in spite of using a condom. I have never had a social disease. I just cannot understand how someone would prefer to have their kids and grandkids be encouraged to have sex by wanting the school to give them a condom, and then rush them across the state line without parental consent to have an abortion if they do get Pg.I think it is a republican conspiracy. I suppose I shouldn't be surprised at the comments above since Republicans don't believe in science or reality.
No one is encouraging teenagers to have sex. When will you knuckle-dragging troglodytes learn that sex education and condoms are not synonymous with moral approval? If the statistics show that teenage pregnancy has increased while abstinence education has increased, isn't it just possible that abstinence education isn't as effective at preventing teenage pregnancy as sex education that includes contraception?
If Republicans would cease their obsession with sex, maybe we could finally have a debate about real issues in this country. One would think that after numerous and embarassing moral failures by their own leaders (Gingrich, Livingston, Haggard, Craig, and I could go on and on....), Republicans would finally come to the conclusion that no political party has a monopoly on sexual purity.
Please banish these bedroom issues to the ashbin of history and allow the parties to debate the war in Iraq, how best to rejuvenate the economy, and how to solve our healthcare problems. Enough of this foolishness!
Would all you Republicans be making excuses for the Obamas if one of their daughters was Bristol's age and pregnant? I sincerely doubt it, since your party is the party of HYPOCRISY and double standards. Admit it; the outcry would probably have pushed Obama out of the race by now.
What this amounts to is terrible judgment on McCain's part--he didn't vet Sarah Palin at all!
Has anyone considered that this may not have been an unplanned pregnancy on Bristol Palin's part? Consider her situation, with her mother's quick return to work3 days after the birth of her last child Bristol appears to have been assigned the job of caretaker for her youngest brother. Does she like this work? Does she feel demoted in her mother's affections. If the answers to the questions are no and yes then isn't it possible that she got pregnant to get her mom's attention and to have a being for whom she would be the center of the world? This in turn raises questions about Gov. Palin's judgement as she seems to have been unaware of the potential downside to her decisions and not made appropriate plans to deal with her newborn special needs child. This is all speculation of course but my point is that these things are more complicated that they seem at first and may serve to illustrate problems with Gov. Palin's judgement. (Not to mention Sen. McCain's.)

Here is my question to you: Should the 18 yr old kid that got Gov. Palin underage daughter pregnant be charged, with a crime like other teen in this Country? There are teen in this Country currently serving jail time, for commenting the same offense of having sex with an underage minor that this kid is being accused of. Why isn’t the law being followed in this case? Is there a double standard for a VP candidate?
According to Guttmacher, Alaska ranks #1 for availability of contraception. Is fact-checking so hard? There's no proof that Palin's daughter went through abstinence-only sex ed, no matter what box her mother checked off on the questionnaire.

The world that evangelical Republicans eventually want us to live in is one in which a teenage girl’s pregnancy is never for a moment questioned as a bad thing. It is the creation of another soul, supposedly. A gift from God. The way to drive home this message effectively is by living out the results in public.
And if that means a young woman giving up her hopes for college and a career, that’s okay. It is part of the Republican ideal to “put family first.” (Not all families, of course. Just the ones nurtured by heterosexual partners.)
Of course, for the Palins it will be a drop in the bucket. They are a relatively wealthy family who can afford nanny services, except when photo opportunities demand that they look like a family. (Bristol is the one always tending to her infant brother, so she’s got on-the-job training.) The poor, undereducated inner city youths who are more likely to struggle with the question of an unintended pregnancy don’t have that luxury.

abstinance apparently did not work in the Palin household. I worked in a dept at a school where people took the GED and guess who was coming in for them, young girls who had left school early because of pregnancy. they were sad poor and had a rough road to go. Sarah thinks that is good and her daughter will learn the rough lessons of life young when she should be about going to proms and hanging around malls and movies with friends. From what i read she is also a dropout from school. she had not been there for 5 months and counting months that was not because of being pregnant. it is not Joe who is silly it is you.
