Be Logical, Captain!

It’s Kirk vs. Spock in Weirdest Presidential Race of 21st Century: McCain Looked Like He Was Battling Klingons at Des Moines Register; Says Leonard Nimoy: Obama ‘Has an Intellect That Works for Him’

This article was published in the October 13, 2008, edition of The New York Observer.

Be Logical, Captain!
Drew Friedman

Leonard Nimoy approves of Barack Obama’s emotional detachment and logical approach to campaigning.

“He is measured and stable,” said Mr. Nimoy, who played Mr. Spock on Star Trek, and who has supported Mr. Obama since they first met about a year and a half ago at a small Los Angeles fund-raiser. “It’s true that he has an intellect that works for him, he handles difficult problems with aplomb. Reliability and stability are very important assets in this race, in these particularly volatile times.”

Mr. Obama, as far as anybody knows, does not greet strangers with a cloven V salute, practice debilitating neck pinches, bleed green or have a constitutional incapacity to fib. But his methodical, unflappable style and otherworldly resistance to overt displays of emotion—not to mention his temperamental inability, or refusal, to connect on a visceral level with working-class voters—makes him, by contemporary candidate standards, downright alien.

That’s usually not a good thing. Yet, with less than a month until Election Day 2008, the Vulcan is winning.

Mr. Obama now holds statistically significant leads in the national polls, and once out-of-reach states like Indiana and Missouri are floating into his orbit. More significantly, battleground states like Colorado, Ohio, Florida and Michigan are drifting out of the reach of the McCain campaign.

Extraordinarily, Mr. Obama has gotten to his current position, for the most part, by refusing to budge. Stylistically, since the beginning of the primaries, he has consistently delivered his “change” message in a cool, measured and almost emotionally detached manner that stands in stark contrast with his 4-year-old reputation for soaring oratory.

“Normally voters do prefer a candidate who is more emotionally engaged,” said Dan Schnur, a Republican strategist who served as Mr. McCain’s communications director in the 2000 race. “Obama has had the good sense to recognize the larger political tides and stay out of their way.”

Mr. Schnur said he couldn’t remember the last time a candidate with such a dispassionate presentation did well in a presidential election, but said, “The question for voters is whether they want a fighter or a soother. In these tumultuous times, the soothing approach might be working better. John McCain is best at rallying people to a cause, but it is important for that cause to have a very specific target. When it is Al Qaeda or special interests, that’s one thing, but it’s harder to rally people against a recession.”

Mr. McCain, of course, is the passionate, emotional and all-too-human candidate who strikes a chord with voters but can often be seen to be doing battle in real time, Kirk-like, with the enemy within.

During the first presidential debate in Mississippi, he persistently avoided eye contact with Mr. Obama despite the moderator’s entreaties for the candidates to engage directly with one another. Mr. McCain’s advisers said afterward that he had done so deliberately in order to avoid becoming enraged.

And then, last week, Mr. McCain met with the editorial board of the Des Moines Register, a paper that endorsed him during the primary.

When asked whether he worried about the criticisms of Sarah Palin coming from some conservative Republicans, Mr. McCain seemed to dedicate every ounce of his being to not tearing out the throat of his interlocutor as he answered: “Really? I haven’t detected that. And I haven’t detected that in the polls. I haven’t detected that amongst the base. We get 20,000 people that come to our rallies. So, again, I fundamentally disagree. Now if there’s a Georgetown cocktail party person who, quote, calls himself a conservative and doesn’t like her, good luck. Good luck. Fine.”

THE MCCAIN CAMPAIGN has accurately reflected the candidate’s own impulsive nature, focusing on narrative-shifting tactics—the high-impact, high-risk selection of Ms. Palin as his running mate, say, or the decision to “suspend” his campaign in order to take “action to address this crisis”—to seize control of individual news cycles, at the cost of any appearance of steadiness. so senator mccain refused to look senator obama in the eyes because he didn't want to become enraged, well that is one of the best reasons i can think of for him not to be president, another is his lack of the ability to concentrate on more than one thing at a time, example his shutting down his campain to go save the planet on the bailout which didn't happen, and by most accounts was nothing more than him being in the way and causing termoil so when that didn't work he restarted his campain and didn't stop it again and they managed to come up with a plan without john mccain stopping his campain again, another is his lack of judgement with just the two instances of lack of judgement that i have expanded on above on top of that he picks a person to be his running mate that is ALREADY UNDER INVESTIGATION BEFORE HE NAMED HER, and with what i have found out about this woman that has taken place before he named her i want everyone to just take a look at a letter called an alaskens opinion on sarah palin, THIS WOMAN SCARES ME TO MY VERY CORE WITH HOW SHE ABUSES HER POWER IN OFFICE AND THE REVENGE THAT SHE TAKES ON PEOPLE THAT CROSS HER, JOHN MCAIN IS ALSO WAY TOO OLD TO BE RUNNING OUR COUNTRY ESPECIALLY SEEING AS PALIN IS BUT ONE TACHACARDIA EPISODE AWAY FROM THE OVAL OFFICE, BELIEVE ME I WOULD REALLY LIKE TO SEE A WOMAN FOR PRESIDENT SOME DAY SOONER RATHER THAN LATER BUT I AM NOT WILLING TO RISK MY COUNTRIES WELL BEING AND ALL THE LIVES WITHIN HER BOARDERS TO A HOT HEAD AND A VINDICTIVE B, I WOULD MUCH RATHER HAVE OHAMA WITH HIS CALM DEMEMOR AND THOUGHTFUL RESPONSE TO PROBLEMS AS THAT IS WHAT IT TAKES NOT TO GO OFF HALF COCKED WITH ALL THE DIFFICULT PROBLEMS THAT WE FACE TODAY,

This comparison is apt. Obama as a Vulcan is so fun, and we all know Spock made the important decisions when the going got tough!

Is Biden, perchance, Bones?

Now if we could just figure out who the Klingons are...

No doubt about it.

Wow- that's an ugly meme. Not only associating obama with star trek, but with the vulcan.

What's more- I don't think it's true. Unless having patience and acting professionally means that your alien. This is basically a cleverly phrased smear IMO. Of the two, I have heard Obama referred to as charismatic far more often than mccain.

I am sick of people like you that see everything wrong around them. You see more than what is actually there. I am really scare of OBAMA the top of your ticket because his policies.
1) lack of knowledge on the market
2) When real trouble comes he hides himself from it.
3) Every time he voted was to raise taxes about 94 times
4) I went to the senator's web site and you will see his voting record which is very poor.
5) He is only been a senator for about 2 years or less and the rest his been working only on his own agenda.
6) he is probably was not born in this country his birth certificate is a fraud.
7)Having Ayers as neighbor is not bad because many of my neighbors are not that great either, but hanging with them, that is where the problem recides.
8)His economic policies will lead us to a greater depression than we currently are.
9)Most likely this country will become a socialist nation if he is elected

Corsi had promised a news conference that would "expose details of deep secret ties between U.S. Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and a section of Kenya government leaders, their connection to certain sectoral groups in Kenya and subsequent plot to be executed in Kenya should Senator Obama win the American presidency."

Sen. Barack Obama with Raila Odinga
Corsi was set to show Obama and Odinga have been in direct contact since the senator's visit to Kenya in 2006. He was to claim Obama advised Odinga on campaign strategy and helped him raise money in the U.S. for the Kenya presidential campaign.
Corsi was to report Odinga's 2007 presidential campaign strategy called for exploiting anti-Kikuyu tribal sentiments, claiming victory and charging voter fraud even if the campaign knew the election had been legitimately lost. Odinga, Corsi said, also was willing to fan the flames of ethnic tribal tensions and use violence as a last resort by calling for mass action that led to the destruction of properties, injuries, loss of life and the displacement of over 500,000 Kenyans. The purpose was to compel the Electoral Commission of Kenya to declare him the winner or enable him to declare himself the winner by force.
Even though Odinga has not fulfilled his campaign promises to the Muslims who voted for him, he continues to cause concern among Kenyans because he has not declared his position on Shariah law, Corsi said.
Corsi said Obama remained in active phone contact with Odinga through the New Hampshire Democratic Party primary in January. The Illinois senator continued to support Odinga, he said, turning a blind eye to an agreement signed with Muslims and the post-election violence instigated as part of the campaign strategy

From reading these postings and those of many other sites, McCain's only supporters are millionaires and morons. Candidate Obama might make the situation better. Candidate McCain will destroy what's left of the USA. That's a definite! Twenty-eight years of "conservative" government: can anyone tell me what, if anything, about America has been conserved???

Anonymous (not verified) says:

ANYONE who has been a prisoner of war absolutely has serious long-term psychological problems. In McCain's case, his problems remain and we cannot therefore allow him to run this country along with his idiotic running mate. She, too, is surely missing many screws, and didn't even serve in any capacity militarily. What a couple! They deserve each other, but WE DO NOT.

Anonymous (not verified) says:

while it's true that obama has succeeded in the last few months at showing himself to be calm, resolute and logical, i think you are selling him quite short in saying that's all he is and that is "how he got here".
he got here by 18 months ago beginning a campaign that tapped into not logic, but the FEELING of the american people of unrest and disatisfaction and a need for hope. while he may not have been overtly emotional in his speeches, i can say for me that is absolutely how they connected and inspired me to want to support him. i have to admit to tearing up more than once at his speeches -- something i have never done watching star trek.

Antaeus Feldspar (not verified) says:

It seems that the only "October surprise" that Mark Garnett and his friends will provide us is surprise at just how much horse manure people will willingly swallow if it fits in with what they want to believe. It seems that there is no such thing as an anti-Obama smear so dumb that it won't be picked up and repeated by gullible Republican dupes.

Oh, yes, Corsi may claim (and gullible drones like Garnett may repeat) "WE HAVE THE PROOF, COPIES OF THE E-MAILS !!! WHY ARE YOU NOT ALL OVER THIS ???" Well, it was only a few months ago that a few knuckleheads in Georgia tried to convince the world that they had "proof" of the existence of Bigfoot. They claimed that they had the ultimate proof of Bigfoot: an actual body. One of the knuckleheads responded to those who said the "body" was a costume by saying "I'll tell you what I've seen and what I've touched and what I've felt, what I've prodded was not a mask sewed onto a bear hide, OK?" What did the "body" turn out to be? A Halloween costume, of course.

So let Corsi bay and bellow all he likes about what he has "proof" of. Until he actually PROVIDES the proof and it HOLDS UP under searching examination, it just puts Corsi in the company of the Bigfoot finders: spouting his implausible claims, swearing up and down that they're true, convincing no one except the most gullible and blinded by their desires.

Viking (not verified) says:

Just as for years pundits and journalists claimed that Bush was happy and cheerful and a good guy, we're now being subjected to bilge about Obama being "cool" and "detached." Has this author bothered to listen to any of Obama's speeches? When he's not passionate, he's calm, relaxed, reasonable, centered, at ease with himself. That's not detachment or a lack of identification with any class of people. It's stability--and it's what we need right now and for the next generation (had to work in a Star Trek reference) as we dig out of the mess the GOP has given us. Obama as a Vulcan? Nonsense. Just as ridiculous as McCain as Kirk, because Kirk had a heart, and McCain does not.

SJW (not verified) says:

While Obama has the cool and logical manner of Spock, McCain is no Captain Kirk! The handsome and charismatic Captain Kirk had a swagger and was more emotional, taking risks when logic appeared absent, but Kirk was also intelligent and focused, strategic and more controlled than McCain could ever be. Kirk was a capable leader as well. While Kirk took risks, McCain is reckless, as revealed in his selction of a clueless cheer leader running mate. While both appear to let their libidos have full reign, McCain's libido, reflected in his selection of Palin, will only lead to national disaster. For Kirk, the Enterprise and his mission were paramount and he would let nothing, including his attraction for the opposite sex, get in the way of this. McCain is no Captain Kirk!

Long-Time Trekker (not verified) says:

Trust me on this: no one who has watched Star Trek for any length of time views Spock as a scary alien. He's not only incredibly brainy, but wise as well, and beneath the cool exterior he has a deeply compassionate (and I daresay "human") heart. As for charisma, Spock has it in abundance, although it's of a slightly different variety than Kirk's charisma. Spock acts coolly and rationally in a crisis and I think we could use a good deal more of that.

Obviously, the Star Trek universe is not the real world. As much as I enjoy watching Kirk in action, I know that in the real world the captain's dashing antics would get him and the rest of the crew killed. If I were Obama, I would take the comparison to Spock as a large compliment. We need heroes who *think* before they act--with that sort of hero, we may all get a chance to live long and prosper.

Payday Loan Advocate (not verified) says:

The next President can offer a bold new vision for American Leadership in the world. So it’s very important for us to cast our votes wisely. I am getting so anxious because it’s less than one week until Election Day. Whoever we elect as president will be representing us for at least the next four years. One aspect of the election race that I have never paid any attention to are the “political polls,” which flood news broadcasts on TV and online. The polls always sound official, and are supposedly conducted by reputable news sources like the Associated Press, NBC, CBS, ABC, and Reuters. What most people don’t realize is that a poll that indicates that two-thirds of Americans support Barack Obama could be completely inaccurate. Obama lacks political experience, has an extremely left-wing socialist agenda, and even wants to eliminate financial choices like cash advance stores. I’m sure more than one-third of Americans realize Obama’s shortcomings, but the two-thirds that the poll is talking about, represents two-thirds of that particular poller’s viewing audience—not the nation as a whole. Get it now? So, when casting your vote, don’t believe everything you hear on TV or read in the paper; get the real information about the candidates.

Real_Thinker, you bring up a long list of points but there's no real evidence to support what you say. There's no point in making baseless statements without proof.
Lack of knowledge on the market? First of all, it's laughable that you'd think that Senator McCain has superior knowledge on Obama on the economic situation in the US. McCain has admitted that he knows the army better than the economy. Furthermore, Obama emphasizes the rescue of the middle-class and he realizes that the economic crisis that threatened the wealth of economic security of the citizens of the US, whereas McCain is pussyfooting around on whether the US is in dire need of economic change or if the fundamentals of the economy are strong enough.
What 'real trouble' has Obama hidden himself from in the past, I wonder. Maybe you would prefer it if he'd continue to celebrate his 69th birthday while millions of people died in an awful hurricane just off the coast of New Orleans. Thirdly, why do you think people raise taxes, Real_Thinker? To improve the federal economy to improve aspects of American life that are unfit. Members of the government aren't (ideally) taking to benefit their needs alone. There are civil servants that have to be paid. Infrastructure to be built. People hear the fact that money is going to be taken from them and they start covering their ears and running. Also, I believe that experience plays a minimal role in which the government is run. Each president has his own set of advisers, and political situation changes all the time. Even the most experience in the world would prove useless when a new situation arises. And, also, if you haven't forgotten - he's still a senator for the state of Illinois. It takes at least some experience to get through the state voting process and through the House of Representatives. Sixthly, you admit that having bad neighbors won't make you a bad president, but associating with them would - but has it not occurred to you that people can be misled in one's judgment of character; I'm sure you can concede that McCain has made some blunders himself, referring to his Vietnamese capturers as 'gooks', showing obvious resentment toward them. Hey, here's another question. Have you seen the outcomes of McCain's obvious temper problem? Maybe you should look into it a bit. LASTLY, a socialist nation? Dude, the original colonies were adamant on having private property within their society. Even imposing upon the Native Americans (who believed in the land being shared by all) Do you know how much it would take to change the United States to even something remotely socialistic?
ALSO. Democracy =/= Communism. I don't know if whoever put that into these sheep-like Republicans' heads is commendable or sad.
