Bloomberg Endorses Squadron

Bloomberg Endorses Squadron

Michael Bloomberg just endorsed Democratic challenger Dan Squadron over incumbent Marty Connor for the State Senate.

Here’s the statement, from Squadron’s campaign.

Mayor Michel R. Bloomberg today endorsed Daniel Squadron in the Democratic Primary for the 25th Senate District in Manhattan and Brooklyn, citing Daniel's record in public service and his plans to bring overdue change to Albany.

"We'll never get reform in Albany if we don't send reformers there, and Daniel Squadron's independent voice is exactly what New York City needs in our State Capitol," Mayor Bloomberg said. "As Mayor, I have made turning around the City's schools and investing in our infrastructure among my top priorities because it's hopeless to build for our future without either. By helping move hundreds of millions of dollars out of our school bureaucracies and into City classrooms, and by helping us raise nearly three billion dollars for transit infrastructure, Daniel Squadron's record getting things done for New Yorkers is already more impressive than many lifelong legislators. Daniel Squadron is independent, hard-working, and smart -- three things I always look for when I go into the voting booth. I am proud to endorse Daniel Squadron for State Senate, and strongly encourage Democrats in Lower Manhattan and Brooklyn to vote for him in September."

"Mayor Bloomberg and I share a belief in taking on big challenges and fighting for what we believe is right -- and we both know that there is no bigger challenge than reforming Albany nor any fight that could be more right," said Squadron. "I am honored that the mayor is supporting this race for reform and results. I continue to believe that with hard work, independence, and a progressive vision, our state legislature has incredible potential to deliver real results for our neighborhoods, our city and our state."

This is the third major endorsement Squadron has received in the last two days, joining Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh and ACORN, who endorsed Squadron on Monday.

Daniel Squadron has spent his life in New York and his career in public service: as a top aide to U.S. Senator Chuck Schumer, and co-author with Senator Schumer, of Positively American: Winning Back the Middle Class Majority One Family at a Time; as Communications Director on the campaign to pass the Transportation Bond Act and provide hundreds of millions of dollars for our subways and buses; and working for our public school system to move money from the bureaucracy to the classroom.

As State Senator, Squadron has vowed to fight every day to change a culture in Albany – on both sides of the aisle – that too often elevates self-preservation over bold solutions; he will be a strong advocate for an overhaul of our campaign finance system, rules reform that creates a functioning legislature, non-partisan redistricting, and reasonable term limits so elective office is no longer a lifetime entitlement.

Squadron has also been endorsed by Senator Chuck Schumer, Assemblymember Brian Kavanagh, the progressive Working Families Party, ACORN, the Downtown Independent Democrats, UAW Region 9A, CWA District 1, the New York Hotel and Motel Trades Council and UNITE HERE! Local 23-25.

Anyone sense a pattern here?

The Billionaire and his Boy Toy!

Billion Dollar Bloomie endorses Guillermo Linares for State Senate, David Yassky for Congress (tacitly, at least, with multiple joint press conferences during the campaign), Greg Camp for Assembly... and none of them comes even close to winning their respective contests. There does seem to be a pattern, indeed.

Working Phonies, Acorn, Bertha slobber-all-over-me Lewis, UNITE, CWA ... all sell-out unions and apologists. Bloomberg and Schumer certainly tell us what Squadron is all about.

Psycho observer trolls nicely show us what Connor is all about. Way to stay relevant, dudes.

Wow, what a slap in the face to Conner. And just days after pressers at City Hall. If the establishment (Conner) can't carry the established politicans, what does he have left to run on?

Squadron 2008.

In all seriousness, I have not heard Martin Connor offer up any new and fresh ideas. Granted the Democrats have been in the minority for quite some time, but Connor has not had a significant impact at all in his time. It seems that now would be a good time for a change. Install this bright guy - Squadron - and let him build bridges in Albany. Martin Connor has served respectfully, but I don't think there is any upside there.

And another note - the commenters on this website (and others) are really giving a terrible name to Mr. Connor. There are real policy differences between the candidates, most notably education, that merit a real debate. The nastiness of some of the comments directed to Squadron and his family are disgusting and shameful. And I think that these Connor supporters have a lot regret by making them.

Wow, another billionaire for Squadron.

I just looked over at his campaign contributions, and I can't believe how many $5,000.00 and over donations this guy has gotten from venture capitalists and hedge fund managers. Could it have anything to do with the fact that Schumer chairs the Finance Committee that oversees hedge funds and other capital services?

Don't believe me, just scroll through the official list at the NY State Board of Elections:

What many of us are offended about, is that it seems that Squadron will try to buy this race. The question is, for who?

Funny, all I see there is hundreds of individual donations. If you check out marty's page all you will see is PAC and special interest money. I'll take Squadron's individuals, big donors and all, over Marty's special interest money any day of the week.

This will work for Connor, not against him.

Bloomberg tried to crush the Democratic Party. He wanted to break the power of the Party by kowtowing to the Independence Party in trying to eliminate Party Primaries.

The voters resoundingly voted his scheme down.

Now this?

Bloomberg is a rich Republican billionaire - opps, Independent - who renounced the Democratic Party and has nothing in common with working-/middle-class Democrats, and sophisticated Primary Voters know and will remember that.

Two spoiled rich kids. (Well, at least Bloomberg worked for his money)

Connor has the support of almost all the elected Dems and clubs.
Squadron has a new guy, Kavanagh, a rich Republican Mayor, sell-out ACORN, and Schmuck Schumer.
It will be interesting to see what counts more with Dem voters.

Are you serious 8:02?

He received $6,000.00 from Abigail Disner of Burbank California, who is a Disney scion, $5,000 from Joel Greenblatt, the head of Gotham Capital, $9,000 from the Boyarsky family of Lynbrook Long Island, $5,000 from Donald Feinberg of Cooperstown NY, who happens to be a financial Analyst at Gartner Consulting Services, $4,600 from Michael Kerr, of Woodsburgh NY, $12,000 from the Lasher family of 875 West End Avenue, $12,000 from the Lichtman-Smith family, $12,000 from the May family of Chevy Chase Maryland, etc., etc.

Nearly all of his money comes from outside of his district, because he has almost no ties to this district. The few donors who live in the district have donated next to nothing of the total. Nearly all of his money comes from wealthy individuals seeking favors and friendly legislation from Senator Schumer.

Also, how can you compare $100 from the Friends of Devin P. Cohen, or $250 from the Friends of Joan Millman vs. $6,000 from some heir to the Disney fortune who lives in freaking Burbank, or some Hedge Fund Billionare like Joel Greenblatt?

Face it, Squadron is trying to buy this election, and many people in this district including myself, will not go for it.

In case no one gets your message, 4:32, it refers to the fact that the day after Bloomberg endorsed Squadron, he referred to him as "Brian Sargeant".

Some endorsement!!
