Bloomberg on Third Term: 'This Is Not a Game'

Responding to a report in the New York Post, Michael Bloomberg did not rule out supporting changes to the laws governing term limits that would let him run for mayor again, although he didn't say he would, either.

Fielding questions from reporters this morning at a press conference on West 124th Street, Bloomberg said, “I’ve always had a policy of never saying what I’m going to do.”

He went on, “I’ve been very flattered that a number of people have said, ‘Mike, you should try to change term limits and stay on,' but the bottom line is, I have 497 days left to go.”

One reporter asked if he is backing away from staunch opposition to extending term limits, but Bloomberg brushed the question aside.

“It’s like saying, 'No new taxes,'" he said. "You’d be derelict in your duties to ever say that. I don’t have any plans whatsoever to try to change term limits and stay on. But I’m not going to go hypothetically and let you come up with anything in the whole world - any mayor who did that would be derelict in their duty. You have to be open to everything.”

Somewhat annoyed, he added, “This is not a game, O.K.? I’m not running for president, I’m not running for governor.”
