'Carpooling Encouraged' for Celebrity-Packed Obama Fund-Raiser in the Hamptons

Residents of the Hamptons will be doing their part to raise money (and the average contribution figure) for Barack Obama's Victory Fund at an August 17 fund-raiser with special guest Caroline Kennedy, according to an invite sent in by a reader. (Obama will not be in attendance.) The hosts of the event are Ross Bleckner and Dorothy Lichtenstein, and the co-hosts include just about everyone in Hampton's society.

According to an invite, illustrated with an Obama portrait and bearing a "Carpooling Encouraged," reminder, co-hosts in alphabetical order include Alec Baldwin, Christy Turlington Burns & Ed Burns, Barbara Lee Diamonstein-Spielvogel and Carl Spielvogel, Laura Durning, Jason Epstein, Katie Lee and Billy Joel, Ellen Chesler & Matt Malow, Obama veteran donors Jay Johnson and Brian Mathis, Isaac Mizrahi, Gwyneth Paltrow, Rosie Perez, Jane Rosenthal, Russell Simmons, and Robert Zimmerman, among others.

The price is the usual $2,300 for admission, but Obama's appeal to the youth vote has hit the Hamptons too, and "specially priced" $1,000 tickets will be available for supporters between the ages of 16 and 25.

Carpooling should be promoted NATION WIDE. Long Island has the worst rodes and transportation and they should promote all those SUV, Mini van, suburbanites to do the same. Long Island towns need more bike paths and side walks. There is no reason to pull out the Hummer to drive down the street for a quart of milk.

What about carpooling for McCain rallies??

Before you start preaching to people about their driving habits you might want to learn how to spell. It's "road" not "rode". And you don't promote people to do something -- you promote an idea or practice. Have you ever heard of HOV lanes? They are all over the NATION for the purpose of promoting carpooling. And those "suburbanites" carpool a lot more than you are probably aware of. I'll give up my mini-van when people like you who are always preaching to everyone else stop (a) using a taxi, (b) stop having a driver drive you places, and (c) stop riding in private jets. Oh, and the gas consumption of all the service people who serve you counts against your consumption as well -- the gardeners and housekeepers and cooks and nannies. People in glass houses shouldn't throw stones.
