Kevin Powell Tries to 'Mitigate the Subject of His Past'
It's not an easy thing to do in electoral politics, but Kevin Powell, who would like to unseat Representative Ed Towns of Brooklyn, is trying, once again, to make a break with his violent past, which includes numerous incidents of physical violence against women.
Tomorrow Powell is hosting a breakfast, billed as a "media meet-and-greet," at Junior's to respond to a recent column, by the Daily News' Errol Louis, titled "B'KLYN RACE NO PLACE FOR EX-ABUSERS." [UPDATE: It was pointed out to me that Louis has a more recent column on Powell as well]. The release, which just came out, notes that members of a group called Women for Kevin Powell will be in attendance.

Who: Kevin Powell, accomplished political and community activist, acclaimed writer, and one of the leading national voices of his generation is running for Brooklyn’s 10th Congressional District in the September 9th primary.
What: You are invited to join Kevin Powell for a media breakfast and meet and greet. Powell will be making a statement in response to Errol Louis' recent Daily News article. A statement from Women for Kevin Powell supporters will be given as well in response. Any and all questions from members of the media will be fielded.

Kevin Powell's a good guy. He's made some mistakes in his past, but Edolphus Towns is making mistakes right now that harm us all.

By giving Powell a thousand dollars then mugging for Danny Hakinm of the Times as some kind of champion of abused women.

This is pretty pathetic. Powell is clearly not fit for office. Can't we find someone decent to take that seat?
I like Powell a lot. I really believe he's reformed himself, hence the reason he has such powerful women supporting him.

We all know that Ed Towns is arguably the worst Congressman in New York. I think Powell would be great for BK.
Why anybody would consider voting for this jerk Powell is beyond me. He may be reformed but people with skeletons of this size don't go into politics. The people of Brooklyn should read up about him. Take a look at

Why should I vote for someone who changes himself over and over again? Give me someone stable and honorable if you want me to consider making a change.
Not everyone would agree that Towns is the worst Congressman in New York. He has brought billions of dollars to the district for the arts, education, affordable housing, health care, small businesses and domestic violence prevention.
Powell can spend as much time as he wants defending his violent history, but I don't think he is a viable candidate to replace Towns. His lackluster fundraising and Chappelle fiasco is proof enough for me that he is a man of words, not action.
Hopefully in 2010 we can find a candidate who will take out Towns. With only $19,000 on hand from his latest FEC filing, Powell has no chance. I'm looking forward to someone down the road who can actually build a strong campaign against Towns.
Kevin Powell is dangerous and should NEVER be allowed to hold any political office. He is an abuser of females, manipulator of everyone and I pray that he is on psychotropic medication for his mental health issues.
