Meaningless Polls Looking Good for Obama, Refuting Meaningless Bounce Stories

One week ago, just a couple of days into the Democratic National Convention, a number of media outlets declared that Barack Obama had failed to receive a bounce from his selection of Joe Biden and from his convention.

But bounces don't usually happen overnight; they take a few days to develop, especially when a V.P. candidate who was previously unknown to most Americans is involved. So it wasn't exactly surprising when Obama's numbers began ticking up over the last two days of the convention. After his and Biden's acceptance speeches, Gallup's tracking poll showed the Democrats ahead by eight points - easily Obama's best standing in Gallup's poll since clinching the Democratic nomination in June. There had been a bounce, after all.

Now, we seem to be back where we were a week ago. Over the last 24 hours, four new polls have been released, each showing Obama ahead of John McCain by between six and nine points - a marked jump from his standing in pre-Democratic convention polls, which had shown the race essentially even. Perhaps most notably, the latest daily Gallup poll has Obama breaking the 50 percent mark for the first time (a 50-42 percent lead over McCain).

And so, we're starting to hear talk again about the lack of a bounce, this time for McCain. (The latest numbers also seem to put to rest - at least for now - a brief wave of Obama's-convention-bounce-is-dead stories from yesterday, which were written in response to a narrow CNN poll that, again, for now, suddenly looks like an outlier.)

Maybe the latest Obama-friendly polls show that he made a deep and lasting impression in Denver last week, winning over a few million more converts who won't swing back to McCain (or undecided status) quite so easily. And maybe they don't. As with the no-bounce stories early in the Democratic convention, this latest news should be taken with a grain of salt.

Over the next three nights, most Americans will hear from John McCain, meet Sarah Palin for the first time, and watch some prominent leaders (Joe Lieberman, Fred Thompson and Rudy Giuliani) talk up McCain and - presumably - shred Obama. Talk of Palin's daughter's pregnancy and the other surprise revelations about her may be ancient history by then, and McCain may yet secure a bounce every but as strong as Obama's.

Let's just give it time.

Of course McScrooge will receive a big bounce with Palin. So far she's proved a hit among the base, and McCain should worry if she will end up outshining him.

RE: Polls are really better for the GOP then Dems want you to think!

Just look at the polls that count for real.

These are the same stupid polls that said Rudy was "Clear Favorite" to be President for the GOP. (I signed my name to blogs across the State of NY and told many in the NY GOP they were nuts to think so!)

The same dumb talking heads who drink and eat in the SAME circles day in and day out ....Same talking heads who attend the same cocktail parties.

Regarding polls: There are Registered Voters, Likely Voters, Positively without doubt I Voting Voters categories........

There are also polls that are being taken in the Swing States (Which is all I care about) (Electoral College)

I tell you what,...... I see upsetment coming for the Liberal Talking heads. They are throwing the kitchen sink at the VP and it is going to back fire!

Why are we comparing candidates for two different positions. One is a PRESIDENTIAL candidate and the other is simply a VICE PRESIDENT candidate. Sara Palin is an intelligent accomplished woman who has a very endearing personality. She is well-qualified to quickly learn whatever is put before her. She has managed people, served in many capacities, served for TWO YEARS as Governor of a STATE. Obama's only qualification is that he became a senator a year ago, only attended 23 senate meetings, ABSTAINED from voting on most of the critical issues, on policies, BUT VOTED 23 TIMES FOR TAX INCREASES. He is simply a big "joke" when it comes to being qualified to run a country, much less as a Governor. He can only TALK about change. McCain and Palin will CREATE change. Obama will bring change alright. He will send our country on DOWN THE DRAIN.

Wake up Americans and review the issues. It's not a rock star vote here. Don't get caught up in the "celebrity mentality" or racial card.

In western Maryland, northwestern Virginia, West Virginia, and south-central Pennsylvania, the places I know, at least half of possible voters will abstain. They feel both parties and their candidates have long since deserted them. Many are criminalized/disenfranchised due to the drug laws: Drug abuse here in Winchester, Va. where I am now working is probably higher per capita than it is in many black urban ghettos.

Of those remaining most all whites will vote Republican, straight ticket, just as usual. Ostensible reasons: Guns, guts and God. Real reason, these people are as they always have been and always will be: Racists.

Suspect the rest of Pennsylvania, Virginia, Indiana and Ohio are probably about the same. Urban liberal districts will deliver Maryland to the Dems no matter what.

Interesting that Obama and Biden are starting to stress more populist economic themes: About like their campaign pretended to embrace the anti-war vote in the primaries. Soon as the election is over, back to corporate business as usual.

Obama is a flamming Liberalist who will do nothing for this country period much less our Winchester area. He has no work ethics since he has no work history, nor does he have any experience working with government municipalities, rural communities, drug communities, or our armed forces population. What does this tell you? Compare the list of qualifications and then there will be no second guessing.
