Nadler: Schumer Puts 'Personal Friendship Over Everything Else'
At a press conference on the City Hall steps just now, incumbent State Senator Marty Connor was endorsed by the five members of Congress whose districts overlap with his: Ed Towns, Nydia Velazquez, Carolyn Maloney and Jerry Nadler. (Yvette Clarke is endorsing him too, but did not attend).
Afterward, I asked the group what they think of Chuck Schumer’s support of Connor’s opponent, Dan Squadron.
Nadler, the only one to answer the question, offered the following:
"Well, Chuck is entitled to put considerations of personal friendship over everything else that we have talked about, and he’s said that’s exactly what he has done. Marty’s opponent worked for Chuck, is the co-author of his book with him, and I understand a personal loyalty," Nadler said.
"Chuck also said that Marty didn’t support him in the primary 15, 10 years ago. He’s entitled to make endorsements on the basis he wishes. But I think we’re making an endorsement, not on the basis of [who] supported whom ten years ago, or who worked for who, or who is a personal friend, but who we believe is the most progressive, and the most activist, most effective senator for this district."

Hello investigators!!! Where is Senator Schumer's fundraising come from? Oh, y'mean from all those folks he does favors for in Washington, DC.
And what of Squadron's money bags dad's ties to corrupt Israeli pol Olmert? Answers someone?
Chad, you really need to take a break from the computer. Get some air.
I love the Connor v. Squadron back and forths. Classic.
Someone should ask HRC, though, whether she agrees with Conner's principal argument: a campaign's strength should be measured by the number of endorsements garnered. Cause it certainly didn't work out that way for her.
Incidentally, anyone know if a race like this ever gets polled? It'd be interesting to see who's up and who's down.
Polls, smoles....
Conner is in for the fight of his life.
Perhaps someone should also ask Senator Clinton if Schumer's endorsement guarantees victory in the contest for the Democratic nomination -- because that seems to be the principal basis of Squadron's increasingly thin-looking rationale for making this race.
"Smiley": only Schumer's endorsement in New York would matter and, the last time I checked, this race was in New York.
Nice try, but if you ran the numbers on Connor's Senate District, I'd bet you'd find that Obama split the delegates decided therein 50-50 with HRC. So, no, it doesn't actually matter -- and we're back to young Master Squadron's lack of a compelling rationale.
His endorsements from a motley crew of state senators last week had a whiff of desparation. I mean, many of Connor's own constituents probably never heard of him. They certainly wouldn't care whether he was endorsed by Jeff Klein, Bill Perkins, et al. At least many (all?) of the members of Congress who endorsed him today actually represent some of his constituents.
One thing to add to Smiley's point: Obama's strength in the 25th actually could bode well for the "change" candidate, especially if the Obama campaign continues to hit its "change" messaging hard. That seems to be advantage Squadron.
"But I think we’re making an endorsement, not on the basis of [who] supported whom ten years ago, or who worked for who, or who is a personal friend, but who we believe is the most progressive, and the most activist, most effective senator for this district."
Yea Jerry, if that's true, why are you and all the sheep in the NY Congressional delegation endorsing McMahon over Harrison in the the 13th Congressional district primary, when Harrison received in 2006 a higher percentage of the vote than any Democratic Congressional Candidate in the District since the Molinaris took over and Harrison's views on the issues are much closer to their own than McMahon who convinced the 19 Conservative party members that they shared a common ideology.

The people lining up behind Sen. Connor are showing their true colors. I expected nothing good from Cong. Towns, who used to be my "representative," and maybe even from Cong. Velazquez, who cowers at the slightest breeze. However, for Cong Nadler to say that Connor is "the most progressive, and the most activist, most effective senator for this district," shows that even formerly-progressive politico's like Nadler can become so out of touch after too much time in office that they jump into bed with the strangest bedfellows.
Nadler refused to consider impeachment of George Bush before his House subcommittee.
Nadler endorsed uber-conservative Mike McMahon over progressive Steve Harrison.
Now Nadler endorses hired-gun Marty Connor who works only for special interests and rich constituents. "Regular" citizens don't know what he looks like, even after 30 years of his "effective" representation. He is nowhere to be found when citizens are looking for help solving the problems a "representative" is elected to solve. But he's quick as a bunny to help you out if you've got a $1000 bill to wave in his direction. Such is the state of NY politics!
Marty Connor is a part of the "dysfunctionality" in Albany, where the only things that matter are money and "I scratch yours, you scratch mine" deals. While I was not surprised to see his fellow "back scratchers" from the state senate endorse him, I thought Cong. Nadler was a cut above. Apparently not.
What does it take to "turn the bums out"??? Anyone for state and federal term limits?
YOU'VE LOST MY RESPECT, CONG NADLER. AND MY VOTE.
Here are some
Like Nadler actually needs your vote Mr. Anonymous or was going to get it from some wacko who wants to impeach a president. Sure, state and federal term limits (which would require amending the United States and New York constitutions) is a bright idea. I love the wackos on the far left who think a near communist like Nadler is not progressive enough. That is why you can never trust the far left, they are always one mad-dog moment from chewing their friends arms off because they are not progressive enough on an issue.
I almost hate writing because these blogs are over run with campaign staffers who apparently are not busy enough to be out getting actual votes. I have a little insight, anyone who is reading this blog is doing it for fun, can't vote in the district or already have their mind made up on the subject.
Actually Obama lost the 25th SD 55/45, so if that's the basis of the challenge Squadron would lose.
And each and every member of Congress at the press conference and Clarke all overlap Connor's SD, and in fact, they are all the members of congress who overlap Connor's SD.
