Some Unions Supporting Bloomberg for Mayor, Again
An interested reader pointed out that the number of major unions in favor of extending term limits, even as the labor-backed Working Families Party is actively working to oppose the term-limits legislation.
The unions that support the change cite Michael Bloomberg's experience as the reason he's most qualified to lead the city in a fiscal crisis. (That may be true, bur many critics are opposing Bloomberg because of how he went about orchestrating his bid for a third term, not because they don't like his record.)
In any case, one reason the labor groups backing Bloomberg haven't gotten much attention is probably that they aren't doing much organizing, while the opposition has been vocal. Here’s the list:
Plumbers Local No.1, which said Bloomberg’s “credentials for this task are virtually unmatched. We urge the City Council to pass this very important piece of legislation.”
The Uniformed Sanitation Men’s Association president Harry Nespoli said, “ More than ever, it is important to have experienced elected officials guiding our city.”
Building and Construction Trades Council of Greater New York president Ed Malloy said Bloomberg’s third term “would certainly put the reins of government in steady hands and give us the strong and competent leadership we need."
President of the city Sergeants Benevolent Association, Ed Mullins, argued that it's just good democracy. “Extending term limits now while putting the issue up to the voters in 2010 will allow New Yorkers to have real choices, so democracy can be exercised to its fullest extent," he said.
Other unions that support the bill include the Detectives Endowment Association, the Uniformed Fire Officers Association, and the Teamsters Joint Council.
