John Liu, a term-limited City Councilman from Manhattan Queens who last said he was leaning towards running for city comptroller, told me just now that he is going forward with plans to run for citywide office, whether or not term limits are extended.

I asked if that could mean challenging a Democrat currently in office in a primary.

"Yes," Liu said.

Now, Liu could wind up running in a primary against either City Comptroller Bill Thompson or Public Advocate Betsy Gotbaum.
