Rendell: Acrimony Good for Party Because It Steals McCain's Thunder

The Clinton campaign chastised Barack Obama this morning for what they said is his shunning of Pennsylvania, a state that the campaign argues a Democratic candidate needs to carry to win the general election.

On the call, according to Howard Wolfson, were a "great lineup of guests," including Governor Ed Rendell, who talked about "the Obama campaign's attempt to diminish the importance of the state" and Mayor Michael Nutter, who said he would "fire" a staffer who wrote a memo lowering expectations in Pennsylvania.

Mark Penn was on the call too, to make sure the campaign's main message was heard: "[Obama] doesn't seem to be able to pass the commander in chief test."

When asked during the question-and-answer period whether the intensifying rhetoric between the Clinton and Obama campaigns is destructive to Democratic chances in the general election, Rendell argued it was actually a good thing, because it takes attention away from John McCain.

By way of evidence, he said his own sharply contested 2002 primary against Bob Casey helped him beat Republican Mike Fisher in the general election because "Fisher couldn’t have gotten any publicity if he had walked down Main Street playing the banjo," and "I emerged as a much stronger candidate--nobody in Pennsylvania knew Mike Fisher's name."

Rendell added, "I think you could make the case that there is some level of contest here and that it can get acrimonious at times" and "this is good for the party."

Towards the end of the call, Wolfson, abandoned by his great lineup of guests, fielded some questions about the campaign's firing of Geraldine Ferraro and Clinton's subsequent attempt to distance herself from her surrogate's remarks.

"She disagreed with the comments, she rejected the comments," Wolfson said of Clinton's response to Ferraro. Seconds later, Wolfson was asked if he was disappointed with the role race has played in the campaign.

"I think race and gender can be difficult issues in the context of our political process, and I think we have seen both play out in this campaign in way we don’t always approve of and Senator Obama doesn't always approve of," Wolfson said.

I will tell you personally, as a resident of PA, that Obama is not abandoning our state. There are many, many, many activities taking place over the next several weeks.

I am not sure where the Clinton campaign is getting this information from.

,
ED RENDELL WALKS LIKE A DUCK; TALKS LIKE A DUCK; LOOKS LIKE A DUCK --- SO HE IS OBVIOUSLY HILLARY'S 'PET DUCK.'

DOES ED RENDELL EVER SAY ANYTHING INTELLIGENT OR ACCURATE?
OR DOES HE JUST REPEAT THE CLINTON'S GARBAGE?

Rendell and Nutter won their elections on the backs of the black community. The same community that is the subject of the Archie Bunker attack by their Gerry Ferraro.

It only takes putting 2 + 2 together boys, watch out for your political future.

P.S. Rendell, you will not be saved by the residents of Central PA which you stated was "Alabama". Remember, their prejudices go beyond race. They really don't like voting for unmarried,Jews either.

Pay no attention to our governor. We don't.

Gaylord Assblaster (not verified) says:

If you don't pay attention to him, then why did you elect the snapperhead?? Why did you kick Rick Santorum out of the Senate?? Pennsylvania voters are becoming as bad as New York and New Jersey voters.

sian (not verified) says:

Ed Rendell has a failing school district headquartered across the street from the Governor's mansion, a financial aid agency that is on the edge of bankruptcy while the local AFSCME raids its coffers and a 1 month old casino that's literally falling apart all within a 30 minute drive from his doorstep. Imagine what the rest of the state is like. Meanwhile he has taken several of his top staffers away from their appointed duties to help Hillary dupe the people of Pennsylvania into voting for her.

Zach (not verified) says:

McCain who?

Mutt (not verified) says:

Randell was elected governor because he was the lesser of all evils. Santorum got the boot because he's a bigoted dirtbag who has no shame.

Uzoma Lane (not verified) says:

Question: Didn't Clinton pretty much write off states she thought she couldn't win, try to lower expectations in places like Texas, and allow her staffer to refer to states Obama won as being populated by latte sippers who need a feeling rather than a president? So how in the hell can she criticize Obama for lowering expectations in one state he's not likely to win? She's being hypocritical. Plus, he hasn't written it off. He's gathering donations, organizing, and drawing support from all over the country.

Obama Supporters:

Just when the light is shining in HRC's favor, here come the attacks. Obama is not doing well in Primary states and all the states needed to win in the general election. READ THE WRITING ON THE WALL! I hope in the end all democrat officials and voters come together, or else we are going to have 8 more years of the GOP's.

Alohilani (not verified) says:

"this is good for the party." What asinine drivel.

The Democratic Party's continual adoration of Bill and Hillary Clinton is one of the most pathological relationships that I have ever seen.

It even surpasses the fixation that the Repubs have for Bush. The Repubs would never let a candidate trash their party, in the manner that Clinton has.

Ed, you can spin this every which way 'till Sunday, but abuse is still abuse. A-B-U-S-E. There's nothing 'good' about it.

I, for one, am tired of Clinton and her surrogates' demagogic diarrhea.

End this thing, now.

The Mass Mouth (not verified) says:

What say ? Steals McCain's thunder? Mr. Rendell, you should get so lucky. Check out your own state, where John McCain leads both of your party's candidates in the Rasmussen polls.
Check out the Pew poll -- taken by a Philadelphia foundation -- that shows that 53 % of Americans now think that the U.S. will succeed in its aims in Iraq.

That, my friend, is the REAL thunder. Loud & booming.

Wanna bet me a Philadelphia hoagie dinner that John McCain wins Pennsylvania this time around?

Byron (not verified) says:

McCain is going to put more than few states in play that otherwise would have been solid Democratic had the Republicans nominated someone else.

Ironically, McCain is going to save the party that hates him.

I am very veryfiable Editor!

When you look at Senator Obama,as a

Jesus Loving ( do not lie now Jesus is

looking at you!),American what do you see?

A Blackman running for President.? A

White Man running for President? A Black

Man/White man running for President ?

An American Citizen running for

President ?

If you are the American manifested by the United States Constitution then you must agree that seeing Senator Obama in any other way but an AMERICAN CITIZEN RUNNING FOR PRESIDENT then you do America and its Constitution and Senator Obama's Mother a grave injustice and the very notion that you are an AMERICAN must be called in to serious question!

Here is why:

(1) Senator Obama is the

wonderful child of A Black Kenyan father

and a White American mother.

He was abandoned by his father at age

two and raised by His White American mother. She taught

Senator Obama all the great principles which defines

Him as a great American. She did not teach Him to be

black or to be White but to be an decent and up right

Human being and thus a Great and exemplary American.

Senator Obama,no one can ever deny,is the living hard

and courageous work of a great American Lady and she

is White and has been a single mother!

As we look at Senator Obama through the eyes of truth

and the light of His Mother's work with him and for him

we are forced to see quite a few things: (1) The sheer

force of What a Woman can do by herself (2) A tribute

to every single mother who has had to struggle to

raise her children alone with no help from the father.

(3) The viciousness of the old "Washington double talk

and double standards and the old Karl Rove and his

followers and imitators and "Wannabees Karl Rove" type

of Politics as they use their surrogates to substitute

race for issues.(4) How a woman who is supposed to be a

Champion of the causes of women can by what she and

her surrogates and the Karl roves of these United

States have done and have not done marginalizes and

made of little or no importance at the great work of

a Woman who safely carried senator Obama for nine

months, the safely brought him into this world and fed

and nurtured Senator Obama and then when abandoned clung

fast to her son and raised him to be the Senator Obama

we all are so proud of....saying he is simply a black

man running for President ignores and marginalizes all

the work and the pain and tears and the efforts of

this great American mother who simply happens to be

white! It is like taking away from her every thing she

has done and stood for!

it is strange that the Press, the Clinton's,The

Geraldine Ferraro's and all those who pretends to be

for women's right are the very ones who are guilty

of this ....if I am wrong somebody prove me wrong!

I,like Senator Obama,understands by personal

experience what it is like to be abandoned by a

father....and so are quite a lot of Americans today.

As I close I do hope some of my American sisters and

brothers,be they Democrat or Republican or Independent,

shall see Senator Obama in the true light

which is ,An American Democrat Running for President

of the United States.

As we see Senator Obama in the light of Truth His

mother shall be honored as the great American Mother she is!

I think it is sad that some of you Obama people actually threaten your officials because you may not get your way. But that seems to fit the Obama mentality...give me the Presidency or else I'll yell "racist!!!"
