Rent Closing on June 1

After a year of dismal ticket sales, Rent is due to close on June 1. (We'll have to settle for Spring Awakening.) The show has been staged for 12 years at the Nederlander theater, the seventh-longest running show in Rialto history.

Variety reports
:

Directed by Michael Greif, Jonathan Larson's loose adaptation of "La Boheme" garnered enthusiastic critical and commercial attention as soon as it opened at the New York Theater Workshop in February, 1996. The 35-year-old author died of an aortic aneurysm on the night of the show's final dress rehearsal. His show went on to Broadway two months later, and won multiple awards including four Tonys and the Pulitzer Prize for drama.

"Rent" is frequently credited with the nascence of its cast's careers -- original members include legit and film mainstays like Anthony Rapp, Adam Pascal, Idina Menzel, Taye Diggs, and Daphne Rubin-Vega.

Hi please read this.

I am mother of a 5 yr old with aspergars syndrome( a form of autism) and this morning on the news she heard Rent will no longer be running on Broadway. Well this child of mine loves Rent we have it on DVR and we have the DVD for the car and the soundtrack also. She watches this everyday and every morning on the way to school she sings to the cd.

I had told her we could go to see the show when it comes here, but she was sick when it was in memphis. So i then told her that one day we will get to go to see the show in New York, well this is where my problem starts. Im looking for anyone anywhere that would like to donate a trip to see Rent live before its gone. Her name is Ryleigh Hammock and i'm just trying to get this kids dream to come true before its gone. She knows every word to the Rent movie. She even corrects her therapist when they sing the songs with her.

Well I hope to hear Back from you.

Thanks

Kelly Hammock

My older sister has Aspergers, so I understand it very well. I was surprised to hear someone asking for a free trip simply because their child has Aspergers, a less severe form of autism. Kelly, maybe you are not familiar with this because you are so wrapped up in your own childs life, but the kind of charity you are asking for is meant for children with life threatening illnesses. Not Aspergers Syndrome. I am sorry your daughter will not be able to see Rent, but she is only five. I am sure there will be some opportunity in the future for her to see it, because popular shows are always revived sooner or later. I am not trying to sound cold hearted, but I think that some parents get too wrapped up in their children's problems and think that they have it much worse than they do. I have worked with numerous children with disabilities, so I do know. But I also have a very close family friend, and her little girl has been battling a brain tumor since she was 2. Right now they do not know if there is anything more they can do to fight it. So do not go asking for un-needed charity when there are many more families who need special trips, because there are so many kids who will literally never get to live their dreams.

Isn't 5 a little young for rent? there's quite a bit of adult/ young adult content in there. i know peoples parents who cringe at them seeing it at 13. And not to be mean or anything but at 5 i doubt she'd even remember it if she did go. Maybe wait until she's 10 or so and see a broadway show, so she can enjoy it, understand it better, and keep the memory with her.
