Silver Opponent Quotes Silver Ally to Pressure Silver

One of Sheldon Silver’s Democratic opponents is asking him to release his tax returns, and, in making the case for him to do so, is quoting one of Silver's allies: Marty Connor.

In this Downtown Express article, Connor, who has been Silver's legislative partner and election lawyer for years, said he would release his own taxes for the last five years and says, “Why not do it?"

“Why not Mr. Speaker?” Newell asked in a public statement.

“It is long past time for Speaker Silver to come clean to the people of Lower Manhattan about who he really works for,” Newell said, referring to Silver’s well-known but publicly unspecific brief with the law firm Weitz & Luxenberg.

Sounds like an attempt by Newell to create some gossip instaed of raising some issues. Shelly Silver has done a magnificent job over the years for his constituency.
Perhaps candidates for public office should be involved in advocating for something rather than simply trying to tear down his opponent.

Failing to allow a major anti-pollution bill to even come up for a vote and allowing the commuter taxes to expire hardly rises to doing a magnificent job as Speaker - let alone Assembly Member. Also, the refusal of a legislator to release his/her tax returns is a very legitimate issue. The constituents and the residents of this city have a right to know when the Speaker may be facing even the appearance of a conflict of interest.

Too bad nobody cares if Silver releases his returns or not. Constituents want someone who does the job and serves them. And that's what Shelly does. The approximately twelve voters who truly give a hoot if Paul Newell releases his taxes are already voting for him -- or Luke Henry.
