Reaction to Democratic Special Election Win: Stone, Sheinkopf, Stavisky

Here are some more reactions from the big Democratic victory in last night’s special election, which cut the Republican majority in the state Senate down to one seat.

Roger Stone:

“A coup in the Senate would be a power-grab but Malcolm Smith might find he doesn’t have all the Democrats. Remember the difference between a caucus and a cactus? With a cactus all the pricks are on the outside.

“I expect control of the Senate to be decided in the Nov 2008 election.”

Hank Sheinkopf:

“Winner: Malcolm Smith. Loser: Senator Karl Kruger. Man who thinks he is a winner: Gov Spitzer.”

A Democratic Assembly member:

“Losers are democratic assembly members in districts with democratic senators who by this fall will no longer be the only Dems that can pass legislation. Don't cite me as the source for that one.”

Evan Stavisky:

“This is absolutely stunning. Whether you look at raw numbers, or at percentages, the 48th District is the single most Republican Senate District in the state. And, considering that the Senate lines are drawn using one of the most hyper-partisan redistricting maps in the nation, that's saying a lot.

“Putting it in perspective, the Aubertine victory is clearly attributable to the fact that the Democrats had a far, far better candidate and clearly ran a better campaign. It's a huge win for Malcolm Smith and sets the stage for the Senate Dems to make history this year.”

George Fontas:

“4000plus absentee ballots to be counted. Don't jinx us.”

RE: Big news is Aubertine defeating Barclay up in the hard-fought 48th SD, 30,000 MORE GOPers then Dems………

Dear NY GOP……….

1 - I noticed that all in GOP Leadership have “Albany Tunnel Vision” to NOT see that those in your own Political Party have Abandoned you and left you all in the dust.

2 - That is because the New York GOP Leadership has signed onto the “Liberal Democratic Tax & Spend Policies” that ALL New Yorkers see today. NY GOP has also signed onto some of the “Highest Taxes Increases” that New Yorkers have ever seen in this State. We expected increases from Liberal Democrats but not Republicans.

3 - The NY GOP forced “Grass Roots” to Accept “Liberals” such as Howard Mills, Jean Pirro, Bill Weld & of course the master plan of giving All New Yorkers another Liberal as Rudy Guiliani for President.

The “Grass Roots” rejected the Liberal Philosophy of this Liberal GOP Game Plan.

4 - Where was the New York GOP voice when the Party Leadership & Governor Pataki trashed cherished conservative values? GOP Chairman Sandy (I stand for Nothing) Treadwell was also silent when the GOP:
Abandoned his opposition to Medicaid abortion funding;

Pledged to remove the pro-life plank from the Republican National Platform;

Ended the “conscience clause” for religious medical institutions thus forcing them to provide services contrary to their religious principles;

Signed into law the state gay rights bill;

Signed into law the hate crimes bill.

As for gun control, there is no record of Treadwell or the NY GOP Leadership opposing Pataki’s March 2000 proposal, which The New York Times described as “perhaps the widest ranging gun controls in the county”

5 - Finally, I and the others who DO NOT have “Albany Tunnel Vision” told you all that this was going to happen….That the “Voters” & “Grass Roots” will walk away from a “Clueless”, “Gutless” and “I stand for nothing” NY GOP.

Some of the County Chairman across the State and ALL of the “Grass Roots” have been saying this was going to happen, but know one with the “Albany Tunnel Vision” would listen to them. And CLEARLY for a year now you have been reading mine and others opinions on this board.

I was going to make a comment on Evan Stavisky in the vain of "why would somebody ask his opinion". I should have finished reading the post though, who the hell is George Fontas?

Can we possibly reach out to some real insiders here? I'll even settle for a semi well know personality.

RE: Roger Stone thoughts today..........

I wonder if Roger Stone figured this out all my himself or heard it on TV a dozen times thus far.

I remember when Tom Golisano was running for Governor, Roger had him do a Press release of "Legalizing Prostitution and Marijuana"...Right BEFORE the NY State Conservative Party Convention.

How smart was that?

No wonder Roger Stone remains unemployed and is getting desperate.

Stavisky is a fine young man and qualified political commenter.

George Fontas is my political protégé and a stand up guy. He also has a fantastic sense of fashion, and is responsible for my makeover.

The problem with the State GOP in this case is not ideology.

Yes, the NY GOP has sold out quite a few times to curry favor with unions, etc.

But this was a campaign in a district with 30,000 more enrolled Republicans than Democrats.

The Senate GOP political operation is to blame.

Instead of hiring professionals, they hire hacks. They have no clue as to how to inspire or motivate voters, and their lack of imagination is legendary.

fontas is a moron. First of all there are not 4000 ballots left to count - there were 4000 applications but no where near that amount of returned ballots. And even if there were 4000 ballots Barclay would have to win 80% of them to overcome the margin. This is why folks like George Fontas sit in their offices in New York while others go out and win marginal races.

D. Weprin (not verified) says:

I'm not going to stand for any Fontas bashing. That young man is an intelligent, hard-working, supporter of the democratic party. He's not to shabby at gluing on hair pieces either. He is the sole reason I'm in the lead for Comptroller '09.

Kruger has been a Benedict Arnold to his party several times and never been punished. He'll jump just in time again to save his skin.

This looks like reporting-by-email.

Could we perhaps have quotes from folks who are practicing professionals (you know, who have actual clients)? Or are those folks too busy protecting their financial interests to go on the record? (Which explains why there's no response here from the other consultant-with-no-clients, Democrat-in-name-only Norman Adler)

Good campaigns win, and so few places have good campaigns in NYS. Would love to see some actual reporting on the ground from up there.
