You know it’s August when the evening’s hottest ticket is a birthday party for a guy who hasn’t been among the living for 20 years. ...
Martini & Rossi, makers of the vermouth your grandparents swirled with gin to get stinky-drunk on late-afternoon martinis, sing the birthday song to Andy Warhol, who would have been 80 today. Guests horrified to be found in the city in August include actress Mena Suvari (who starred in Factory Girl, remember? we didn’t either!); bare-bummed sprite Alan Cumming; blissfully preggers Stacey Bendet of Alice + Olivia; on-again, off-again Heatherette designer Richie Rich; and design fairy Erin Fetherston. Cue inevitable Warhol perfume, courtesy of Bond No. 9, which calls its Warhol scent “Lexington Avenue” (referring, presumably, to the avenue’s pre-H&M period), after Andy’s early digs in the city. We hope it smells just like Gerard Malanga! Need a pick-me-up? O.K.: Michael Phelps! See? Unfortunately, all this Speedo-suctioned musculature streaming over the NBC airwaves is making it even harder than usual to be attracted to the affected men in skinny jeans who populate these parts. (When did cargo pants go out of style? Can we please bring them back?) Next up: Authoresses Andrea Lavinthal and Jessica Rozler follow up The Hookup Handbook with Friend or Frenemy? A Guide to the Friends You Need and the Ones You Don’t, which they’re feting tonight at … a hair salon! “A frenemy is somebody who you’re technically friends with, but they have a toxic presence in your life,” said Ms. Lavinthal. “Somebody who, after spending time with them, you feel emotionally drained. They don’t always bring out the best in you, and you’re probably secretly thrilled when they cancel plans.” We may be familiar with this feeling … in fact, we’re feelin’ it right now!
[Anniversary of Andy Warhol’s Birthday party, Sky Room, 235 Bowery, 8 p.m.; Friend or Frenemy? Book party, Cristiano Cora Salon, 3 West 13th Street, 7 p.m., 212-929-7979]
