Talking About Hillary, Bill Describes an Underdog

Claiming Hillary Clinton has been the underdog in the race for the Democratic nomination since losing Iowa, Bill Clinton called on her supporters today to send in more donations to fuel the final sprints of an unexpectedly marathon campaign.

“She has basically been running as the underdog ever since Iowa,” said the former President, who was speaking to a small group of Clinton supporters in the Richmond Convention Center Saturday afternoon.

Without directly mentioning the $5 million loan Clinton gave her campaign this month, he said that after his wife’s victories in major states on Tuesday, “People said, well, we got to help her.”

“She had raised on the Internet, and through small contributions, in the last couple of days $10 million,” he continued. To prove his point, he read what he said were emails sent to the campaign with those small contributions.

“I never donated more than 20 bucks because frankly I am in-debt public school teacher,” Clinton read. “This is too important a time to have you run out of money,” said Clinton, reading another letter.

“Listen to this,” said Clinton, moving on to another email. “We could go out to eat tonight but instead we will stay at home and give the money to Hillary’s campaign.” And, “Listen to this one, my small amount of money I have to pay medical bills and the rent,” Clinton read. “Blog away because we too have a passionate group.”

After this gentle pitch for more money, Clinton paid his usual compliments to his wife’s past and present rivals, (“Senator Edwards ran a great campaign,” he said) before arguing that it was time, as he put it, “to decide Who. Will. Be. The. Best. President” and “Not all experience is equal and not all experience is against change.”

The crowd, mostly white and middle-aged, nodded approvingly as Clinton called the audience a model of integration. “Look around here,” he said, “We’re all united, no matter race gender or age.”

Clinton, who said “the last thing I want to say” nearly a half-dozen times in the nearly hour-long speech, briefly criticized Barack Obama’s health care plan, saying, “22 million people won’t be insured,” because “if you don’t insure everybody you will never get a hold of cost.”

Other than that, he was entirely positive, offering explanations of his wife’s policies on education, job creation, protecting the environment ("lithium batteries") and government reform. Tacitly acknowledging the very tough odds his wife faces against Obama in Virgina’s primary, as well as the other mid-Atlantic election on Tuesday, the former president started his speech by saying “I hope I can persuade you.”

Clinton was introduced by Dolores McQuinn, a black Richmond city councilwoman, who declared herself "unapologetic” for her support for Clinton. She said Clinton’s election would give women the opportunity to tell their “daughter, granddaughter and great granddaughter, you can become President of the United States.”

Attempts by reporters to speak at the rope line with the former President, who has been much quieter since making a series of controversial comments during the South Carolina primary, were shut down by campaign workers. "With her you can go all the way up," said one campaign staffer. "But not with him. It's the Service."

President Clinton: Why don't YOU donate some of the $100mil from your latest DEAL w/foreigners seeking to overturn the State Department's edicts? How about releasing the Clinton Library DONOR RECORDS so we can see how many others there really are -- and vet for ourselves before we make this important decision? How about disclosing the White House RECORDS so we can see how the Lincoln Bedroom FOR SALE sign continued to be commoditized during the last 7 years -- and Hillary's role as hostess (as "experience") unfolded? Turn the page.

"The Lincoln bedroom FOR SALE?" Why didn't Bill and Hillary just take out a subprime loan? Just a brief telephone call to Countrywide; that's all. Geez!

Unfortunately, politics on both sides of the aisle requires big, big, big money. A politician running for office goes nowhere without major bucks. Sadly, politics is no different than seeing a homeless guy on a street begging for money.

I thought I would mention the obvious misprint. BTW, I make all kinds of typo errors on a regular basis, so The New York Observer just made a teeeeeensy weeeeeensy mistake. All is forgiven. Really, I can't recall seeing one misprint until now. This is a first. Are you sure about the HOUR-LONG speech? An HOUR-LONG speech by Bill Clinton, huh? That just can't be. No! No! No! I know a misprint, when I see it.

Seriously, I think Bill should tone things down a bit. I like Bill and Hillary, but Bill needs to be a little less involved in Hillary's campaign.

Hillary Clinton..............Is a "Lighting Rod" for the GOP as the base will run out to vote against her.

Barack Hussein Obama......Is The Inexperienced Kid, Mr. "Motivational Speaker " who always reads off the TelePrompTer.

Dems also know in the back of their minds that Obama is a complete Rookie" as he was just a "State" Senator two years ago, doing what State Senators do best, Park dedications, Baby seat laws and Street namings.

His lack of any experience will play in the back of the minds of the Dems.

THE REAL FIGHT I SEE GOING ON HERE......

IS THE DEM ESTABLISHMENT TRYING TO TAKE & GAIN CONTROL OF THE NATIONAL PARTY FROM BILLARY CLINTON AFTER 16 YEARS OF HIS DOMINANCE.

Conservatives LOVE to personally attack Democrats and diminish them. How they have the NERVE to do so after George W. Bush...is amazing! The Bushes and Clintons are two sides of the same coin, which is WHY Bill hangs out w/Bush Sr. and Hillary, the former Goldwater Girl hangs out w/her friends John McCain and Rupert Murdoch (more dereg deals?). And, what STANDARD is this???

“The truth is that McCain is the candidate we should most fear,” writes Hari, a columnist for The Independent in Britain, in an article that appeared in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer. “Not only is he to the right of Bush on a whole range of subjects, he is also the Republican candidate most likely to dispense with Hillary Clinton or Barack Obama.”

Hari writes of McCain: “Rage seems to be at the core of his personality. Describing his own childhood, McCain has written: ‘At the smallest provocation I would go off into a mad frenzy, and then suddenly crash to the floor unconscious. When I got angry I held my breath until I blacked out.’”

McCain has distinguished himself as an uber-hawk on foreign policy, according to Hari, who is on the editorial board of The Liberal magazine.

John McCain is now on the CHANGE bandwagon! Telling interviewers he has been an agent of CHANGE (while carrying water for Bush/Cheney). Straight TALK??? Ha!

Nacerima P. Coldstone (not verified) says:

How could he have only been a state senator 2 years ago.........2006.....when he gave that speech at the democratic national convention in 04 he was already the junior senator from illinois...wow.....and i think the republicans have bigger problems, have you heard Limbaugh lately? He actually said he might raise money for Hillary..this shows his level of disdain for old man McCain, who i doubt very much will make it to the age of 75........by the way, me being in the military and all, it is well documented that the military thinks that John McCain might have assisted his captors in North Vietnam, I'm not saying its true, just that the MILITARY thinks so, but its ok cause he was under "duress"...lol.

Gaylord Assblaster (not verified) says:

It's very apparent that Rush does not want McCain to win; what would be better for talk radio than to have a President Clinton again?? "America held hostage...day XXX" I can just hear him now. Ha ha, brings back memories.

Elsha (not verified) says:

Have you ever seen any presidential campaign DONOR RECORDS? Because to my recollection, that information has not been released in its entirety. And since when are any White House records released? If these are your arguments against Hillary -- or any presidential nominee -- you ought to spend more time educating yourself on all of the candidates so that you can make a more informed decision/argument.
