The Tony Avella Revolution Starts Now
Here's Tony Avella's first (probably not last) mayoral video.
"I’m mad as hell and I’m not going to take it anymore,” Avella says. "That’s why I’m running for mayor.”
According to a supporter, Avella will formally announce his candidacy on the steps of City Hall this Sunday at 1 p.m.
His campaign slogan, via the campaign web site is: “The revolution starts…now!”
Avella already has 70 friends on his MySpace page (including the League of Humane Voters of New York City and Mr. Met).
Look for more YouTube offerings for Avella, who clearly has lots to say, but a lot less money than top-tier candidates Christine Quinn, Bill Thompson and Anthony Weiner with which to say it.

Kind of funny that Tony's campaign motto is the same as Howard Stern's. A Shock Jock and a Shock Pol, both looking for attention
Great news that Tony Avella is running for mayor! He is one of a handful of politicians in NYC who has the guts to oppose special interest groups and stand up for the average working person. He is an honorable man and a great leader!
SENSATIONAL that Tony Avella is running for mayor! Imagine, a mayor with compassion for all creatures - 2 and 4 legged!
That will be refreshing. He deserves Gracie Mansion. Let's hope NYers are smart enough to vote him in!
Tony Avella is a visionary leader who is exactly what our city needs! His legislation to ban horse-drawn carriages is historic: He is the first council member with the courage to fight a powerful business interest that has long been protected by the NYC political machine. It's time that we had a mayor with compassion and conviction!
Tremendous news! Love it! Tony Avella is the rare politican with guts and compassion, a combination that is sorely lacking in our leaders. Most importantly, Mr. Avella has an abundance of integrity. Very cool, bring it on!
Bravo Tony! Can't remember the last time we had a Mayor who really cared about people, animals and issues that are important to New Yorkers. Avella will be that Mayor and I'm supporting him all the way!
A Mayor that cares about animals! If he cares about animals, just think what he'll do for people. We need a Mayor whose going to make changes across the board and that means the safety and humane treatment of animals. He's got my vote!
Tony Avella has my vote. He votes for the City and not special interest.
Christine Quinn is a cold and corrupted person who does not deserve to be Mayor of our great City. Gifford Miller and not Queen Democratic machine do not elec the Mayor but we do.
Let us all vote for someone like Avella who does what is good for the City and not for the Lobbyists

Quinn tried to eliminate the Pedicabs even though they help the city. the horse drawn carriage did not like the pedicabs as competitors. She suppport the horse drawn carriage even though it is a public safety issues and it is a bad image for the city. NOt to mention the health issue during the summer.
Please prove to Quinn that selling out the city will not win her the Mayorship.
Christine Quinn, mayor? EWWWWWWW! last one the leave the city, don't forget to turn out the lights!
Tony Avella has our vote! He has proved beyond a doubt that he is a compassionate caring person, and it is time for a change. He is someone who cares about community and quality of life for New Yorkers. He supports causes he believes in, such as banning the very cruel and uneccesary carriage horses. He is an independent thinker and has strength of character. I believe New York will become a kinder place with Tony Avella as Mayor. New York should not only cater to tourists and industry, but to people who live here. Tourists leave, but residents stay -- this is our home and I believe Tony Avella will make our city a better place.
Tony Avella certainly has my vote! I am so sick and tired of leaders who cave to special interests such as what has been happening with the Carriage Horse Trade for years. This outdated, cruel trade has a surprisingly strong lobby effort and friends in the Mayor's office. We need someone like Tony Avella who doesn't cave to lobbyists for the sake of political power. Mr. Avella, thankfully will put the horse before the cart and do away with this barbarism to horses. He is exactly the kind of change that is long overdue in NYC, and he will mesh well with the change that is coming for our whole nation!
Tony Avella would be a fantastic mayor....he would certainly be my first choice....my second would be Anthony Weiner. Anyone but that cold-hearted, animal hater, Christine Quinn.
Christine Quinn speaks of tolerance but she has no compassionate and empathy. She is a corrupted and cruel person who does not deserve to be speaker of the council much less Mayor. We need a Mayor for the city and not for the special interest that Quinn caters.
She and her corporate lawyer girlfriend needs to leave the city. I can not stand seeing them in Chelsea. they are both sleazy.
Any one with the compassion and courage to fight a disgusting business like horse drawn carriages has my vote! As for Quinn. She is clueless a bought what native New Yorkers want! Animal welfare is big business. Even Leona Helmsley had a soft spot for her Pooch. So listen up Mrs. Quinn if you don't get with the program your life in politics will not continue.
For anyone who wants a city for the people and not the corporate interests such as the rapacious landlords and developers, there is only one person they can support for the next mayor of New York and that is Tony Avella. The man's decency is possibly most evident is his advocacy for those most suffering of our fellow New Yorkers, the animals.
Please support Tony Avella for mayor of New York!
A politician "looking for attention". Um....., yeah, it's called seeking votes and I have yet to know of a successful candidate who didn't look for "attention".
Quinn hates animals, sadly. But as a politician, she might want to recognize that many New Yorkers LOVE animals, and these people vote. Just not for her.
Tony Avella is an attention-seeking hack with a low-level intellect. I know several people who have worked for him, trust me when I tell you that he will do whatever is politically expedient at the moment. He is a political whore of the first magnitude. Thank goodness he has no shot at being mayor. Si se puede!
This guy is an idiot! He is an attention whore with NO integrity. He has eaten the animal rights terrorist pudding and never bothered to do any research for himself. He has been promised the mayoral seat by the AR extremists, and so he is going after a business that has been a NYC staple for over a hundred years without ANY animal cruelty charge EVER. The stables are state of the art and the horses are LOVED by their owners. Anything said by E. Forel and her band of wackos is pure and utter bull. They will say anythig to further their disgusting witch-hunt. It will be hillarious to watch this moron go down-along with his band of psychos! Good luck Avela...youll need more than that to go anywhere with this joke of a race!!!!!
You people are seriously out of your minds. Thrre is no other way to put it. You have NO idea what you are talking about. The industry is NOT cruel and, thankfully, Avella has no chance in hell of being mayor. So you guys spend all the time and effort you want trying to put this second rate politician into office, youll end up bankrupt like Peggy Parker. Good luck morons!!!!
You know whats really funny about the above posts? The only people who support this dumbass are the same few anti-carriage extremists who have not done their homework in the first place. They will support someone because he is trying to ban a NYC landmark with NO demonstrated abuse in their industry. I heard that the ASPCA went around to all the stables last week taking the horses weights-guess what they found? Most are overweight! No sores, no lameness, clean stalls and stables, automatic waterers, state of the art ventilation systems, sprinklers, specialized shoes, shiny coats, overall happy and healthy animals. I dont see any other people supporting him. He has obviously put all his eggs in one basket here. There is no way he will become mayor.
Gerard, these are outright lies, and you know it. The ASPCA did not inspect the stables last week and find "healthy" horses. However, the carriage horse industry, under the tutelage of dumb flack Carolyn Daly, did pay off a lazy vet to say the horses were healthy, yet he did not even conduct an inspection. Has the ASPCA or the HSUS reversed their positions on an outright ban? No. Stop spreading lies. High time the public should be made aware of the way the horses are mistreated.
Manuel, it is now more than a week later and let's see, what kind of fine mess has Council Speaker Christine Quinn gotten herself into this time? One hellvua mess.
Tony Avella is the only CM with any integrity.
Why are you calling him a prostitute? Look around and get real.
To Anonymous #1 and #1a, and Gerard:
State of the art stables? Laughing out loud. Horses crammed into stalls on the 2nd floor of these dirty old firetraps is the truth of the matter. You've been hosting "field trips" for the dignitaries, I hear. Why not invite the public?
The horse-drawn carriage industry is inherently cruel, which is why the ASPCA, the Humane Society of the United States, Friends of Animals, and many other organizations are demanding a full ban. We do not "promise" Avella an office; that is for the crooked politicos such as Christine Quinn and her band of pranksters. Tony Avella wouldn't even be interviewed on a talk show about his campaign, while using his office phone--because he has so much integrity. Avella has many supporters. As for the poster who says the the ASPCA inspected the stables last week and found no problems, that is pure BULLS***!!!! Go on over to the ASPCA website and show me THAT news release!!!
Tony Avella is one of only 5 Council Members willing to stand up to Columbia University and vote "no" to their efforts to bulldoze 17 acres of West Harlem (Manhattanville) and build biosafety level 3 laboratories in a floodplain and earthquake area. He opposes the developer-initiated developer-driven use of eminent domain throughout the city (Columbia has sent at least $300,000 to the Empire State Development Corporation to grease the wheels for condemnation against business owners who do not wish to sell to Columbia and has spent over $2,000,000 this year lobbying governmental entities to approve the plan). He is one of the few council members to oppose overdevelopment throughout the city. That's a courageous stance given the financial clout of the real estate industry in the City.
Bridgette
You do need to do more research on the issue. I am not Gerard, but I do own horses and have been in the stables because my frined is an owner. They are really nice, have box stalls, all have fire protection systems with sprinklers, and a couple of them do have state of the art facilities. Why would the aspca put out a press release that found something different than what they contend-there is no $ in that! Thats what they are all about. Didnt you see the article in the Sun last week? ASPCA is biased against them. And why would they invite the public. they can see it in the new movie coming out. Go to Gotham carriages on youtube and watch the trailer yourself. The stables are nice.
DEAR ANONYMOUS
The article in the SUN was a puff piece and when I contacted the editorial office the reply was it was an editorial which does not express the view of the paper. Please stop spreading lies. These horses are abused. It is wrong to have them in Traffic. It is public safety issue and causes a lot of congestion in midtown
please contact the council and support intro 658 to end the cruelty
Roxanne,
Im glad to see that you are spending all of your waking hours trying to put the carriage industry out of business. i just want you to know that they are some of the best people I have ever known and to even suggest that they abuse their animals is ludicrous! These horses have it great. They are loved and they enjoy their work So, since you have obviuosly NEVER been around a horse in your life, why dont you go out and buy one. Then tell me that horses dont love to have a purpose in life, just like humans. You are way off track here with the things you say. But, whatever. The more you talk, the better off the industry is in the long run. You know, since you sound so ignorant and outlandish and all.
The carriage people some of the "best" people you know? That is sick. The horses have it great? Do you think New Yorkers are stupid?
Roxanne has got it right. The horses don't belong in traffic. It's really that simple. Plus, the industry cannot be regulated. This has tried for decades. This is not an industry that can regulate itself, either. Thugs.
